Before I start writing what is on my mind, be assured that I do understand the value of TRPs to the cast and crew, and for the existence of the show in general. This post is mainly to initiate a healthy debate on TRPs and it's repercussions.

Here is what is on my mind lately -

Off late, I have observed that shows with high TRPs in the past, in order to get back the lost momentum, are reverting to killing off the initial jodi we (viewers) fell in love with, and then starting off another love story in its place to keep the show running.

From the show makers point of view, this is a perfectly legitimate thing to do. Since TRPs are what brings money. Do what it takes to get back the momentum. Love stories do have a limited life span after all. Once the initial story is revealed, what else would you show the viewer to keep the interest intact?

However, for a viewer, who gets emotionally attached to a jodi, this is grossly unfair. As a viewer, you are practically living your life through these jodis. Then to witness their death/their characters getting butchered beyond recognition is almost as painful as losing someone close to you in your life.

So, as a viewer, if you are watching a love story, may be, low TRPs aren't a curse after all? Because once the initial story is told, the show will be forced to shut, leaving behind happy memories for one and all.

As I said, I wanted to initiate a healthy debate, and hopefully, people will take it in the right spirit.

Having said this, I sincerely wish that RR TRPs do increase, and the crew achieves whatever it desires to achieve during the stint of the show. But this discussion is not about that.

I guess that's where the problem lies. They will not give it a year if the TRPs don't show it. And if it reaches a year, then they try what it takes to keep it running as long as possible. It is a catch 22.

Quite a different sort of view. And I do agree!
My mom is an avid viewer of Sanny's shows and whenever I go and rant to her about the TRPs not increasing and how the show will be forced to shut down if it goes like this, she always cooly tells me this - "So its good na! The story should be kept short and sweet. Will u lyk it when the story starts to drag and ur fav show starts to irritate you?"
And as a general public she is right. For her it doesn't matter if the TRPs go high or low. She just wants to watch the show as long as it entertains her. And infact she likes Sanny's shows coz they all tell the story In an entertaining way and end soon, making way for a new beginning.
But we here know why the shows end. If they get high TRPSs, they go on for ages, losing track of the initial story. If they don't, they end soon. So it may sound harsh but yeah low TRPs myt be a boon for viewers lyk me n my mom.
I wish the system here was lyk the western countries - shows divided into into seasons. That way they cud enjoy high TRPs without losing the entertainmwnt value of the show coz at once they just have to write for a few epis and they can always come back with fresh ideas in the next season. And the viewers can enjoy watching their fav characters for a long tym too!

I think if stories had a fixed story... say 12-15 months of solid story, I'd like it much better, because all shows I've watched can't pull up more steam than that. It's this concept of "endless" as long as TRPs are high, that's just weird.
So if RR could tell a compelling story in about one/one half year and end on a high note, I don't really care for the TRP.

I am in favour of seasons or fixed episodes format
I will never want RR to run long if they start dragging it
