I agree. The woman is always married forcefully to the emotionally damaged guy with anger management problems and then she has to deal with his outbursts and tame him. He treats her like a piece of crap, but it's okay because he was raised badly and he has emotional issues from his past that made him into what he is and it's the woman's job to deal with those issues and turn him into a human being. After all that, the woman still manages to fall in love with this guy and they live happily ever after. It's stupid, but it does make for good TV.

7) Shat dharma yuktah: woman who has this six virtues

8) Kula dharma Patni : good housewife (a married woman who is not employed outside the home)

This is the basic rules set for a "Good wife/partner" this is what the world expects from a woman. With such archaic thinking, one cannot do much and this is what is shown in our serials. Take a look at the most popular and long running serials, this is the philosophy they base it on.

I wish there were rules for men on similar lines and I would want them enforced and FAST.

... and I am sure all these values were coined by a man

Soap audience are taken for granted. That's the tag line.
Probably they expect to counsel the women who watch the show, 'hey look, women live worse life, so you are practically having a happy life, so stop cribbing'

Or may be giving tips to MILs, 'learn from mohini, this is how you Ill treat your DILs.'

Or worse, tell the youth of today, 'man, these are the qualities required if you want a woman to fall for you, be flawed, as much as possible'

Good going.

Lovely discussion here 👏. Great post @TM and many thoughtful replies.
Here's what I feel about the same.
Does the show with damaged hero & pristine heroine fetch TRP? NO, it does not (strictly my view - but will give some facts to present my POV).
The top TRP earners are the shows which have a powerful heroine doing well in career and personal life. The most admired women on TV are those who refuse to give up their dreams and fight back - without leaving their roots.
The consistent TOP show is about a woman not losing her identity and her dreams after her marriage. Her husband is a nice guy, who's not insecure of his wife's success and supports her all through.
The TOP show on this Channel is the story of a woman who empowered herself, fought back with everything she had and successfully made a place for herself in society. Her husband is again a nice guy who is matured and supports her.
The TOP show last week is the story of a woman who ruled India - really ruled as against most of the queens who just had a token presence. She was someone who actually had a say in the governance, and whom her husband listened to and respected in matters of governance (as mentioned in our history books)
The Mills and Boons lind of abusive, regressive love stories are more popular with the young crowd - well educated, internet savvy crowd. The so called TRP Aunties do not love these shows - internet crowd does.
Look at Madhubala, IPKKND (part 1,2) - these shows were never TRP toppers (IPK 1 did well initially but there was a steady decline later). These are internet successes, rage among the young viewers - esp overseas viewers.
As for the much-maligned Indian mentality I have read about, here's my take. I have studied in India, and worked in UK and then US before returning to India when I was 7 months pregnant and missed family like crazy. And believe me I have not found the so called Indian metality as a defining feature. Girls are progressive, husbands supportive and MILs understanding. The families shown on TV are as much alien to women in India as to those settled outside. There are problems in society but not of the nature shown on TV.
Disclaimer: I don't watch any shows but have relatives who do. Also, I read forums on and off - as I work in the night (to spend my time with my kid during the day). So, don't know what happens everyday on each show but have a general idea about the main essence of the shows.

You know - you might just be right...the only shows my mother and my mother in law don't watch are IPK, RR, Madhubala, QH..the romantic ones...

And you are right..for all their inane plot twists..at the end of the day lamp and wick has a heroine who is training for the IPS...the Balika Vadhu lead did become the sarpanch, did marry a man more suited to her eventually - the daadi there is an example of real change...someone who didnt care for girls being educated, for male heirs - now is fighting for the same...

Yes, maybe now they are encouraging the super woman concept..which is rather unreal too...but better super woman than doormat???

Hmmm there's a thought!

Maybe the ask is just to have a romantic story that doesn't need to resort to the Mills and Boon template to keep us interested...Surely it cannot be that difficult...at least reading all the fan fiction on this forum hints that there is content out there waiting to be thought of!

Unfortunately in real life also expectation of fixing the damaged man is there, in tamil they say after "kaalkattu" (marriage) everything will become OK . And if the women tried to fix the damage and if she couldn't and wanted to quit also, women is blamed of lack of patience.

In our neighborhood knowing that a person is schizophrenic and who is totally dependent on his parents and brother, married him to a girl stating that after marriage everything will be alright, now that girl is sick and tiered of her in laws and her husband and want to divorce, but you know what now she is stamped as "unfit."

If in reality is like that means and the soaps are just fueling them and encouraging them.

Am I dreaming or what????????? Some one has actually posted the reality of modern India ...I was like thank god some one here is sensible enough to put the right picture across...The serials like IPK, RR are loved by young generation not TRP aunties and it never will until and unless they either turn in serials like DABH or BV...for the love of god stop ranting about what happened in IPK and what is happening in RR...this is a diff genre all together. I am an educated urban Indian girl and I use to love M & Bs since I dont knw when, I still do like them and I have absolutely no problem watching serials like IPK and RR coz they neither make me an abla naari nor my husband a monster...IT IS A FICTION, why on earth cant u take it as a fiction and just watch it for entertainment...it is not what happens in india, at least I dont see that happening where I live. Please for god sake stop making posts about FL being abla naari and ML being what not...phewww!! Grow up ppl, and understand the difference between REALITY and FICTION!!! Or else I think dont just say that I am over it, just leave it and move on to a serial which you find more sensible but please stop with this ranting!!

Thanks for putting forth your view. The reason shows like DABH and BV do well is because they show gradual progression. I remember in the early days of DABH, Sandhya was show being constantly taunted by Babo for not knowing any of the house hold activities. After 3 years finally the female lead in DABH is working towards realising her dreams. There is no isntant gratification or sudden change. And thats exactly the point in RR too. The show began 2 months ago, Paro is a girl from village who has lost everything. It would be unrealistic to show her to be someone who can speak back all of a sudden. One of the writers of RR is the writer of DABH and the director was the director of BV. So i have faith in them to take the characters and plot forward.
