So my lit prof opines: treat the films as an independent text. It is the director's personal interpretation, like you have yours. So I have started my Gautam Buddha stint against the HP film lovers.
Sachchi baat. Don't look at movies as though they are interpretations of books. I know it's hard. But some of the best movie remakes are actually ones that did NOT stay true to the books and deviated significantly, involving the director's vision.
Case in point being Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland. The later Charlie and the Chocolate Factory even. (fine, I love Depp)
Peter Jackson, on the other hand, wins all the prizes for technical brilliance and staying true to the books-- but shows remarkable lack of imagination and in the end, comes off as rather boring.
