Two women and two men...one couple married...one virtual strangers. One man who has taken the vows to nourish and protect, who has accepted his duties as the final protector and life giver in front of the holy fire, in front of the whole world at large. And the other man, the destroyer.

The contrast between the two Ranawat cousins is highlighted. Samrat, who grew up in the protective circle of a complete family, should have learnt to cherish and protect his family too. A husband for five years, who does love his wife and tries to support and cheer her in bad times, should be the protector of her happiness, her dignity, her honor. He should be the one standing beside her in such vile circumstances cause he had pledged that protection. Yet, here we have a man who actually stands, a mute and deaf witness to his wife's public humiliation. The one he should be taking care of is being ripped and whipped while he stands a silent spectator. A life partner, a husband indeed!!
The other side of the coin, Rudra. A man who grew up without any finer familial sensibilities, almost brought himself up, a man who does not believe in any kind of commitments and relationships. Rudra, who learnt at a very early age that all ties, family all otherwise, are not to be relied on. This very same man, without a moment's thought or hesitation, stands tall between insult and honor. They don't have a relation yet, neither private nor public, nor have there been any promises. He owes her nothing, except a duty to save her life. Yet the instance he feels that the going is getting rough for Paro, he is the first to stand up in defense. He is ready to compromise on his pride in order to protect her self respect. This man is ready to bear the harsh consequences rather than stand and watch her being scratched, physically or emotionally. His unconscious priority her well being and himself taking a back seat. A man who will always put his woman first, who will always cherish and protect, irrespective of vows or pledges, announced or felt.
One a husband, another a heartless executioner!! One a promised defender, the other a callous enemy. The contrast between two men, their principles, their beliefs, their upbringing!!

Precisely my thoughts as I watched on Friday. Of course you wrote it much more eloquently than I ever could have.

Well said. Its a stark contrast who is a better person. I seriously expected Samrat to say something to end the fight.

A beautiful post Eve...the whole fact that a woman has to leave her family and live with her husband's family seems preposterous to me...why can't the couple start their new live separately in their own home...having their own space.
Samrat is a coward ... in fact none of the ranawat men have guts to stand up to the evil ruthless woman...other than our Major. But I do feel Major has his own reasons...he doesn't want Paro to get involved in their matter because she is just has no rights to do it. Rudra is territorial with Paro...him taking the slap was his way to defy Mohini that she doesn't have the right to punish Paro. I think it will be more clear after the following scene.
