Rangrasiya has been gaining popularity with viewers swiftly. The show tells the love story of a smuggler's younger sister, Parvati and a military BSD officer, Rudra.

Two new characters are rumored to enter the show as Rudra's cousins. Sunheri who loves him like a real brother is a very light-hearted character. She will play Udit Shukla's real sister, the second entrant on the show. Udit is rumored to play a parallel lead on the show to add some more twists and turns to it.

They both should be seen on screen next month

I would stare outsdie for hours to get the right gaze' Ashish Sharma who is scorching the screen with his lean hot look in Rangrasiya talks about his challenging role

Y ou have undergone a complete transformation for your role as Rudra in Rangrasiya...

Yes. When Saurabh (Tewary, producer) was talking to me about the serial, he made it clear that the pysche and journey of the character was very important. Usually, one prepares for the role externally, for this character I prepped inside out. Physically, I had to tone down my body. I already used to workout and was beefed up but army guys have a naturally tough look. To achieve that I started combat training and got rid of gymming. I also started cycling, swimming and going for long runs on the beach. I swapped my car with a friend who has an Enfield and rode it to get a hang of it, as the bike is an extension of the character I play.

What did you do to get into the pysche of the character?

After mentally drawing a sketch of Rudra, I started writing down notes on him " his thoughts and his routine. Sometimes, I used to write a few lines in verse too. This diary has been a great help to me, especially because I shoot multiple scenes in a day. When I have to do a particular scene, I refer to my diary to get into that mindset.

Heath Ledger used to maintain a diary when he was playing Joker in The Dark Knight. Was he the inspiration?

You could say that. However, I have done a course in acting, where I learnt several methods of acting and this was one of them. On TV when you are playing such a complex character, it helps to have a diary because you don't get much time to prepare as compared to films.

What is your take on Rudra?

Rudra is someone who carries a lot of baggage. He hasn't had closure and is like a volcano ready to erupt at any time. However, because of his army training, he is calm and composed. For me it was a challenge to project that angst, the fearlessness and the desolate look in his eyes. I adapted some small gestures to convey that. The way he stands with his hands on his hips shows that he is ready to take anything heads-on, but at the same time he's in control. Another thing I worked on was his gaze. I used to sit at the window and stare outside for hours to crack that code. My wife (actress Archana Taide) thought I was going crazy (grins). I wanted to do it because it's important to believe in the character, to get into the depth and connect with the pain. Only then can the audience relate to you.

How much of Ashish is there in Rudra?
Like Rudra, I don't open up to many people. I am reserved on the sets and keep to my self. That's the reason I relate to him. However, I don't kill people like him!

There hasn't been any dialogue between you and Sanaya Irani in the serial, yet one can see the chemistry between you two...
The fact that Sanaya and I didn't know each other and met for the first time on the sets of the show has worked for the characters Paro and Rudra. They are strangers to each other, but when they meet something happens!

However, there is a lot of violence on the show...

It's guns and roses, so there will be violence but ultimately love will win over it.

In your debut serial Gunahon Ka Devta too you were an angry young man...

That was completely different. In Gunahon Ka Devta, I was a goon, always in a rage, a 21-year old rowdy who falls in love. Rudra, on the other hand, is angsty and burning from inside. There are several layers to him, which I have yet to explore. Another role I enjoyed doing was Ranvir in Rab Se Sona Ishq as an actor. The kind of transformation my character undergoes was interesting. Initially, he was a careless vagabond who ran away to London, later he became an obssessive lover-husband and eventually a good friend.

Any chances of you working with your wife Archana Taide?
I really hope so. Archana is a brilliant actress whose potential hasn't been tapped. I think I will produce and direct a show for her!

Ever heard a daily soap actress shooting in same lehenga and jewelry for two months. Well Sanaya Irani aka Paro of "Rangrasiya" has broken all records of Indian Television. Sanaya says "People have loved my look. I have been wearing this lehenga and going places for promotion, shooting promos and episodes. But it's so hard for me. More than lehenga this jewelry is irritating. Personally I don't like wearing heavy clothes, jewelry or make-up and look here I am wearing all these for my show for two months."

Except for few initial episodes where Sanaya Irani wore normal Rajasthani gaghra choli, people have mostly seen her in red lehenga. Sanaya aka Paro gets married in red lehenga but her husband gets killed immediately after her marriage by army officer Rudra, as he was involved in arms smuggling. She is taken into custody by Rudra as he suspects her to be part of smuggling racket. Ever since Paro is in Rudra's custody wearing her red wedding lehenga. Aashish Sharma aka Rudra jokingly says "Yes she wore the same clothes in Rajasthan where we shot initial episodes and here in Mumbai also we see her in same look everyday. It's stinking now."

Even Sanaya's friends have also started pulling her legs. Dharshi Dhami aka Madhubala who visited Sanaya on Rangrasiya sets says "O my god, not again baby, this was my expression when I saw Sanaya today as few weeks back also I saw her in the same lehenga."
Well we really hope that Sanaya's loyalty to her red lehenga gets her loyal audience too.

Rajasthan calling

Wednesday, Jan 22, 2014, 12:34 IST | Agency: DNA

The desert state has taken centre stage on TV with several serials based and shot in the picturesque region.

From the captivating sand dunes to the magnificent havelis, the bright and colourful costumes to the beautiful jewellery, the intricate art to the rich culture, Rajasthan is being presented in all its glory on the small screen. The tag line of the state's tourism department, Rajasthan comes alive with us' could very well be adapted by the TV producers. Over half a dozen serials have either been shot in this exotic region or have stories based there. Be it the top-rated family dramas Balika Vadhu, Diya Aur Baati Hum (DABH), Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai (YRKK), the historical Jodha Akbar, the life story of Maharana Pratap or the new launches Do Dil Bandhe Ek Dori Se, Rangrasiya and Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya, the desert state has taken centre stage.

Irresistible locales
Producer Sunjoy Wadhwa, one of the first to shoot in the region for Saat Phere and later Balika Vadhu says Rajasthan has a mystic value. "There's more to Rajasthan than the dunes and deserts. It's got beautiful locations that make for excellent visuals. The first time I decided to shoot there for Saat Phere was simply because till then nobody had thought of it and in case of Balika Vadhu, the subject demanded it," he says. It's the heritage element and the old world charm of the state that draws producer Rajan Shahi who has not one but two shows " YRKK and APHG "based there. "There is a different kind of colour and flavour even within the region. Jaipur's temples and architecture are varied from Jodhpur's, which makes it interesting," says Rajan.
Suarabh Tewary chose the desert land to base Rangrasiya because "it's a passionate edgy love story and Rajasthan provides the best backdrop for the scale and grandeur of the show." He adds that it is an ideal place to shoot romance, passion and aggression!

Back to the roots
By and large, Rajasthanis strictly adhere to rituals and customs and are dominated by joint families, which are conservative in their thinking. This provides great fodder to serials that play on drama and emotions. As Sumeet Mittal says, "On TV, the stories are still about the basics, rooted and very emotional. Rajasthan provided the apt backdrop for the story of a liberal girl trying to pursue her dream of becoming an IPS officer in an orthodox family in DABH." Even Balika Vadhu which dealt with the issue of child marriage found a perfect setting in the state that is grappling with the issue. However, Rajan believes that the element of modernism is coming in and there is an amalgamation of conventional and liberal thinking. "The old generation in Rajasthan holds onto its traditions but young boys and girls are questioning some of them, which is what my love story is all about," he explains.

Colourful customs
Thanks to these shows, audiences have become aware of festivals and customs distinct to the region. Says Rajan, "After the Teej festival was showcased in YRKK, I was told people abroad started celebrating it in a big way. It's become a well-marketed festival like Valentine's Day!"
Sumeet adds that Ganghor festival which was almost fading away got a boost after it was celebrated in DABH. "The youth which tends to disassociate with such festivals get curious whey they see how it is celebrated in the shows," he says. While Rajasthan is already a tourist attraction, these serials do give a boost as viewers' love to visit the place their favourite characters hail from. Says Sumeet, "Pushkar is already a big tourist attraction among foreigners but after DABH, I had tour operaters telling me that Indians are evincing a huge interest in the place."

Stories decide setting
He may have three Rajasthan-based shows on the channel, but Ajay Balwankar, Head Fiction, ZEE maintains that stories dictate the set-up. "Jodha in Jodha Akbar hails from the Rajput family, in Do Dil Bandhe Ek Dori, which is about a rich man and a poor hired help we needed the backdrop of a huge haveli and Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya is about Marwaris, so Rajasthan featured in these. When we wanted to depict the working middle-class in Pavitra Rishta it was a Maharastrian Mumbai set-up, while Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke is a small-town story in Benaras, etc," he elaborates. Asit Modi producer of the numero uno show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chasmah avers that stories are the driving force. Yet, he says, Rajasthan and Gujarat are visited time and again because they have a lot of colours, celebrations, traditions and relationships. "Writers get lot of stories here," he says. JD Majethia, who has produced several Gujarat-based shows points out that regional channels in these states are not popular as compared to Maharashtra. "Hindi channels get a lot of viewership from these regions so it makes sense to base stories there," he reckons.

Whatever the reason, right now, the clarion call on primtime is padharo mhare des!

Sanaya is fun to work with: Ashish Sharma
Ashish Sharma

Ashish Sharma, who is quite a hit as Rudra in Rangrasiya, speaks about his co-star Sanaya Irani.

"I have often heard from people that Sanaya is arrogant. But after working with her, I can say it is not so. She is fun to work with. However, my favourite co-star will always be Nivedita Bhattacharya, who played my bhabhi in Gunahon Ka Devta. I am in constant touch with her," he said.

When asked about comparisons with Sanaya's earlier co-star Barun Sobti, he said, "I have been trying to give my best, and I hope it works for the fans. Initially I used to receive hate tweets and hate mails. People used to abuse and curse me. But after seeing my performance, a lot of the same people turned around and apologized for not giving me a chance. I can feel this pressure of living up to the expectations of people. I hope I can fulfill it."
