"Khandelwal sahib---we'll need to operate her----" Dr. Modi said to a shocked Sunil. Shaan opened his mouth in horror and just looked at Dr. Modi astonished. Geeta raised her eyebrows and looked at the doctor in sarcastic shock as well.
"Lekin doctor----" Sunil started.
"Look----she hasn't gained consciousness for the last four hours----as a doctor it is my foremost responsibility to ensure that my patient is out of harm's way as soon as possible----and in this case it's not happening----we will need to operate----it is a case of a nervous system almost breaking down----"said Dr. Modi, his hands in his pockets. Shaan and Sunil looked at each other. Shaan stole his eyes from Sunil in a split second to look at Khanak's mother who was sobbing silently in the corner. His own eyes filled with tears again. Hurriedly he rubbed them with his thumbs.
"Doctor I do not think Dr. Mitul would have suggested to operate----" Geeta started.
"Funny----I was under the impression that I was handling this case at the moment, not Dr. Mitul----" Dr. Modi said in a steely voice to Geeta who stopped talking abruptly and just stared at Dr, Modi with an expression of menacing understanding.
"Mr. Khanadelwal----" Dr. Modi continued as though no one had interrupted him, "Be assured that I will try my best to bring the patient up to the mark----I have an experience of over 20 years----Khanak needs to be handled by only the best----" Dr.Modi looked at Shaan then looked pointedly at Geeta and said "---not someone who has only just started practicing neorology-----you don't want to take advice from a jack of all trades, master of none---- do you?"
Geeta gritted her teeth as Dr. Modi turned to Sunil and further explained the complications of Khanak's case to him. Decisively, she held Shaan's arm and took him to the far end of the corridor, excusing herself. "Shaan----don't let this happen---Khanak does not need to have a surgery----trust me----Mitul would have never agreed----"
Shaan shook his head and rubbed his hands on his entire face. "Geeta---agar Khanak ko kuch hogaya----"
"Kuch nahi hoga Khanak ko Shaan-----don't let him operate----he's just trying to mint more money----I know Dr.Modi very well----Shaan believe me-----please-----Mitul ko bhee yay baat pata hain----this doctor is not sincere to his job-----"
Shaan raised a hand to make Geeta stop talking. "Geeta please! Enough! I don't bloody well care about the money! I just want my wife to get alright okay! Do you even realize how much it's killing me that she has been in that ICU for the last 5 hours!!" Shaan said hysterically pointing to the ICU. "You'll never understand---you never will----" Shaan's throat felt heavy and his eyes stung again.
"That's not true Shaan----" Geeta pursed her lips and felt her vision sparkle and blur as tears entered her eyes. "A surgery is not safe for Khanak----please understand----" she whimpered softly, her voice cracking.
Shaan turned his face away. "You'd be better off focusing on your gynaechology ----" he said stonily and left to finish off the conversation with his father and Dr. Modi.

Mitul grabbed Natasha's waist from the back, bent down and kissed her hair, then blew into her ear. "Kya kar rahee ho?" he asked softly.
Natasha giggled and pushed her hair back with her free hand. "I'm making pasta----" Natasha said proudly. She was in the kitchen and was stiring the pasta vigourously. They had been living in the guest house that belonged to Mrs. Malhotra situated right beside the beach in Goa.
Mitul smiled and kissed her on the cheek. "Bhabhi say seekha hain?" he asked.
Natasha turned around and looked at Mitul in mock hurt. Mitul did not remove his arms from her waist as he faced his wife. "Nahi!" she exclaimed." I was the one who taught HER!"
Mitul laughed and kissed her nose lightly. " I love you----Tasha---" he took a deep breath and said to her.
"I love you too----" Natasha said promptly, putting her arms around Mitul's neck, having to stretch it a bit too much to reach it. "Did you call your mum?"
Mitul rolled his eyes. "Nahi----signals hee nahi lug rahay----I haven't talked to anyone abhee tuk----I'm trying to find a corner in this guest house where my phone catches signals-----" Mitul withdrew from Natasha, picked up his phone from the table and roamed around the house pointing his cell phone in all corners, hoping that it would catch a signal.
"Hope it doesn't----you're on vacation----" Natasha said smiling. Mitul returned it too.
"Yea there's nothing better than to be shut off from----aray Tasha!!" Mitul suddenly stopped talking and yelled Natasha's name. "I'm getting just one signal-----you think I can get calls-----Oh I've got a voice mail-----it's Geeta---" Mitul said confused as his phone beeped.
Natasha looked on slightly bewildered. "You activated your voice mail?! How come I don't know?" Natasha said accusingly.
"Because I always pick up your calls don't I?" Mitul said putting the cell phone to his ear and listening to the voice mail. "It's not like I don't ever feel like talking to------" Mitul suddenly stopped talking. Natasha saw his face turn white right before hereyes in the next 30 seconds and in that instant she knew that something was not right.
"Mitul-----" Natasha breathed as Mitul held the phone loosely to his ear staring into space. "Mitul!!!" Natasha yelled making Mitul get out of his shock.Mitul turned and looked at Nataha not being able to speak.
Natasha snatched the phone from Mitul and listened to the voice mail too. Her shock at hearing what was at the other end was overcome sooner than Mitul's. "Mitul--- let's go! " she shook Mitul's shoulders. "MITUL!!" Natasha yelled. "We need to go back! Go back to Mumbai!" Mitul nodded vigourously. He registered watching Natasha switch off the gas of the stove before she rushed to pack up. Mitul stared into space again.
"Bhaiyaa----bhaiya main bach jaoo gee na?" Sameera had said weakly to a distraught Mitul.
"Haan Sammy----main hoon na----main tumhay kuch nahi honay doonga----"
"Main jaantee hoon----meray bhaiya mujhay bacha laingay-----bacha laingay-----you're there for me"
Natasha grabbed Mitul's arm. "I'm done. We hadn't unpacked a lot of things anyway-----chalo----Airport---Khanak ko kuch nahi hoga Mitul----you'll be there for her-----" she said with a finality in her tone.
Mitul was grateful that he was finally moving.

"Khanak? Khanak-----ankhain kholo------ankhain kholo na----"Shaan said numbly rubbing Khanak's hand as she lay unconscious in the ICU. "Main toh tumko---tumko batanay hee wala tha----" he began to cry. "Laikin main kaisay batata-----kaisay batata Khanak-----" he cried as he placed his head on Khanak's chest and rubbed her arm. "Tum itni khush thee----kaisay batata----" he asked again and again.
He got up and picked up Khanak's mehndi filled hand. Looking at it closely he saw the smudged bit that Khanak had thrown a fit at 2 days ago. Shaan's nam had smudged and she had said an upshagun would happen. " Mera naam tumharay haath say mit gaya---laikin main tumharay saath hoon Khanak----wapis ajao please-----" he began to cry bitterly. "Don't do this to me again----your burthal can't live without you----" he said rubbing her hand all the while but she did not wake up.
Madhvi came over to place a hand on Shaan's shoulder. "Shaan----Dr.Modi is calling you outside----" she sniffed.Shaan nodded numbly and got up. Slowly he let go of Khanak's hand and went outside, wiping his nose on his kurta as he walked.
"Mr.Shaan----we're going to be operating in around 30 minutes-----some formalities we need to take care of before the surgery------" Dr Modi said to a nodding Shaan. Sunil and Geeta came over to stand there as well. Geeta's eyes were blood shot. Sunil looked worried.
"Righ doctor----" said Shaan distractedly. "So whatever you can----just make Khanak get alright?"
"Dr Modi you know her case right?" Sunil asked worried. "I mean you were working with Mitul----"
"There should be absolutely no doubt about that Mr.Khandelwal----like I said I'm experienced----" Dr. Modi replied shoving off Sunil's concern. Sunil frowned, concerned. "Mr.Shaan, I would like you to sign on this----just formality----like I said."
"What's this?" Shaan asked taking the papers from Dr.Modi and beginning to read.
"It's a form that says that the doctor nor the hospital shall be responsible in the case of any---err'unfortunate event occurring as a result of this surgery----that you take complete responsibility for the surgery----" Dr. Modi said.
Shaan's heart fell to the pit of his stomach as he looked at Dr.Modi in shock. Sunil kept a calming hand on Shaan's shoulder. Shaan gulped, his fingers trembled as he took the pen from Dr.Modi. As he was taking the pen, his eyes met Geeta's who shook her head slightly, her lips parted to form a 'No'. Shaan closed his eyes for a split second and mustered all his courage and strength to keep his hand steady on the piece of paper.
Dr.Modi pointed at the place where Shaan was to sign. "Here" he said, pointing on the form.
"Dr. Modi I think I'll take over from here---" said a confident loud voice a distance away. Shaan, Sunil and Geeta turned in shock as they looked at the source of the voice that they recognized so well. It was Mitul, looking tired but determined as he looked dangerously into Dr.Modi's eye and spoke.
