Part Ten: Pehla Ehsaas

Mumbai: Khandelwal's Office

"Dad app ne aisa kyun kiya? How could you be so mean to them…" Akshay stormed in Sunil's office after bidding Mr.Raichand and Additiya an embarssed good bye. His frustration and disappointment led him to question his own father for the first time in years. He couldn't wait to hold it all in till he got home, he wanted answers and he decided to get them now.

"Akshay behave! Hum iss waqt office mein hain tum yeh mat bholo…" Sunil looked up at Akshay and answered him with coldness. He was well aware of Askshay's reason for raising his tone with him but decided not give a dramatic reaction.

"Main jaanta ho hum office mein hain aur shayad iss liye abb tak tolerate kar raha tha…app ne Mr.Raichand se iss tarah kyun baat ki…app aisa kar sakte hain main sooch bhi nahi sakta tha.." Akshay expressed his disappointment and waitef for his father to give him a reason for his unjust behavior.

"No! How could you Akshay! Tum iss deal ko le kar excited iss liye thay na kay aggar main deal approve kar do toh tum Shaan se Manali mein jaa ke mil sako...! tumhay laga mujhay yeh sub nahi pata lagay ga…yeh saara drama jo tum subah se kar rahay thay…" Sunil revealed that he was well aware of Akshay's intentions form the get go.

"Oh… toh app ne yeh sub kuch apna ghussa utaarne kay liye kiya…? app Shaan ka ghussa unn logoon per lash out kar rahay thay…Dad app ko kya hogaya hain? App pehlay aise toh nahi thay…." Askshay asked in a soft tone but his pain could still be felt in his words.

"Haan nahi tha aisa pehlay kyunki tub mujhay garoor tha kay meray dono betay mera saath de gay…meri mehnaat ko kabhi waste nahi hone de gay…per main galat tha…tum ne ajj phir vaise he apni awaaz unchi ki jaise tum ne Shaan ke college decision kay liye ki thi… Yaad hain voh din jub Shaan ne NYU kay MBA program ko reject kar ke Mumbai University mein admission liya tha…? uss din bhi tumne mujhse issi andaaz mein baat ki thi apni bigre huye bahi kay liye." Sunil reminded Akshay of the last time when he had gone against Sunil's wishes. That was 3 years a go but at the moment it felt like it was just yesterday when Akshay stood in front of his father rebutling with him and defending his younger brother's choice of higher education.

"Yes Dad mujhay yaad hain…kaise bhool sakta hoon voh din jub maine pehli baar app se kuch maanga tha…apni khushi kay liye nahi per mere subse pyaare chotey bahi kay liye…app ke khud ke betay ke liye…Dad app kyun yeh bhool jaate hain kay app Shaantanu ke baap hain aur aik baap apne betay kay liye apne dil mein nafrat kabhi nahi la sakta…"

"Main Shaantanu ka baap tha Akshay…Shaantanu ka meray ghar se ya mujhse abb koi tailuq nahi hain…He left on his own, aggar baap samjha hota toh mujhse baat karta…meri izzar ki fikhar karta, chooro ki tarah adhi raat ko ghar se nahi bhaag ta…"

"Dad Shaantanu ghar se kabhi bhaaga nahi tha…app ne khud usse humare ghar se nikaala tha…phone per app ne ussay bola tha kay voh app se ya app ke ghar se koi rishta na rakhe…" Akshay sated frimly as he remembered hearing Sunil's phone conversation with Shaantanu clearly.

"Maine vohi kiya Akhay jo mujhay theek laga…Shaantanu aur tume kabhi koi fark nahi rakha maine per iss ka yeh matlab nahi kay Shaantanu apni zindagi ke faisle iss tarah gair zimedaari se karay… uss ka bachpana abb main aur bardaasht nahi karo ga aur yeh baat ajj tum bhi dehaan se sun lo…" Sunil looked at Askhay with an expressionless face and declared his decision in regards to obidence that he expected from him.

"Fark toh kiya hain app ne Dad…shuru se kiya hain Shaantanu aur mujh mein fark…bachpan se le kar ajj tak Shaantanu ko galat samjha…voh business aur MBA ki education app ke liye kar raha tha...apne khud ke shauq ko toh app se chupata tha…darta tha kay app gussa ya disappoint na ho…yeh baat aur hain kay app ne kabhi note he nahi kiya…main shuru se business ki taraf inclined tha toh app ko laga Shaantanu bhi yahi karay ga…lakin kyun Dad? Shaantanu ki kya apni koi personality nahi hain? Kya ussay apne sapne pura karne ka koi haq nahi hain?" Akshay opened up to Sunil for the first time; he wanted to point out how wrong his father was in regards to his own son.

"Sapne pure karne se aggar sub ke ghar chalne lagay na toh koi bhi naukri kay liye preshaan na ho…Music aik hobby zaroor ho sakti hain per career nahi…ussay shauq tha toh voh pura karta aur meri support ke saath pura karta per zindagi mein jub rehnay kay liye aur kahne kay liye kuch na ho toh Music koi kaam nahi aata Akshay…" Sunil presented his argument with his traditional thinking since he had seen and experienced hardships when he was the only provider for their family after his father passed away.

"Main jaanta ho Dad kay app jo keh rahay hain voh galat nahi hain per Dad abb zaamana badal gaya hain…entertainment industry bahut agay nikal gaye hain aur mujhay yakeen hain Shaantanu ka talent ussay iss industry mein bahut agay leke jaaye ga…" Akshay understood his father's prespective but still presented him with his modern day thinking.

"Toh theek hain phir mera faisla waqt he badaly ga…dekhte hain mera beta aur tumhara choota bahi apne shauq ko apna career kaise banata hain lakin tab tak mujhay Shaantanu kay defense mein aur kuch nah suna…mujhay aur majboor mat karo kyunki tum sooch bhi nahi sakte yeh sub meray liye kitna mushkil hain…" Sunil sounded disheartened but his decision remained firm about keeping his differences with Shaantanu's ideology that Akshay was advocating for.

"Fine Dad…but main abhi bhi Shaan ka bara bahi hoon aur main apne chote bahi se mill kar raho ga aur iss baat se app agree karay ya nahi karay isse mujhay koi farq nahi parta…main aik acha beta hoon per aik bahi ka farz bhi achi tarah se jaanta ho…Shaantanu ko support main karo ga aur shayad yeh baat mujhay app se bahut pehlay he kar leni chahiyay thi…"

Akshay waited for Sunil's answer but after a long pause he realized that his father's indifference would remain as it is and he really had nothing to say in return, he couldn't stop him even if he had tried. Akshay felt uncomfortable using harsh words and tone with his beloved father and knew that he had caused him pain as he turned around to leave his exquisite cabin.

Manali: Perfection Cloth House

Shaantanu was busy folding up the sale section of the store where customers made a huge mess while looking for their matching and contrasting choice of fabrics. Khanak had helped him out with the customers earlier as she knew how Adi managed the store and was able to lighten some load off of Shaantanu who had taken over the entire store's responsibility in Adi's absence. It was a busy afternoon but the closing hour was finally here and all they needed to do was clean up and close.

"Khanak I am sorry main tumhe yahaan le aaya…" Shaantanu apologized to Khanak as he folded his side of the mess, while Khanak fixed the hangers on the display.

"Kyun? App mujhay Sorry kyun bol rahay hain?"Khanak asked a bit confused at Shaantanu's apology.

"Yahaan per aake tum apne kaam ko choor kar meray kaam mein jo busy hogi…pata nahai lyrics likh bhi saki hogi ya nahi…" Shaantanu wondered if his decision of bringing Khanak along had wasted her time.

"Voh toh maine complete bhi karli…app ka dehaan customers per zayaada tha…maine thodi thodi kar ke lyrics puri karli hain…" Khanak smiled at Shaantanu who was worrying for no reason at all.

"Acha? Per mujhay laga tum bhi saara waqt customers mein he busy thi…vaise mujhay sunao gi nahi apni lyrics?" Shaantanu questioned while folding up the last items under the sale section.

"Aap chahte hain main app ko lyrics phar kar sunao?" Khanak questioned him back as she was quite surprised at his request. She had always wanted to read them to him but refrained from doing so thinking that he might find her act funny or weird.

"Haan bilqual…jub likhi app ne hain toh sunai gi bhi app Ms.Lyricist!" Shaantanu walked towards Khanak with an excited smile. He had given her the title "Ms.Lyricist" as that was Khanak's official role in his beginnings as a young singer.

"Theek hain toh closing puri kar ke app ko main lyrics suna do gi…lakin isse pehlay app bhool jaye please kuch kah lejiyay kyunki main jaanti hoon app ne aik baar phir subah se kuch nahi kahya hain…" Khanak agreed with Shaantanu but she wanted him to eat something first. It was very shocking for Khanak to see Shaantanu go without food for such a long time at once.

"Kaahna…haan mujhay kaahna kah lena chaiyay…tum mere saath kaahna kahao gi na?" Shaantanu questioned innocently as Khanak smiled at his gestured.

"Kyun aggar main saath nahi kahao gi toh app bhi nahi kahaye gay…?" Khanak asked as she went back to the small office where she had placed her tiffin in the miniature fridge.

"Haan…mujhay akele kaahna kahna bahut bura lagta hain…I don't know why but kaahna main hameesha kissi ke saath kahta ho varna nahi kahta…" Shaantanu confessed one of his odd habits to Khanak. He remembered how his Mom and Daadi made fun of his habit when he would drag his health conscious Khusboo bhabhi to eat with him even if it meant compromising her diet plan for her one and only sweet devar.

"Shaantanu app ki baatein kabhi kabhi mujhe bahut ajeen lagti hain…yeh toh koi baat nahi huyi kay aggar koi saath kaahna na kahye toh app sara waqt bhoke rahay gay…" Khanak came out with her tiffin and plates; she was serving him without realizing that Shaantanu was lost on his own world.

Khanak looked up as she wanted to hand him his plate but found him lost in space. He had a saddened look on his face and she could clearly see moisture build up around his light brown orbs. A part of her wanted to reach out to him and shake him out of his misery but then she stopped and decided to call out to him. "Sha..Shaantanu….?? app theek toh hain na..?"
"Huh..?"Shaantanu became aware of Khanak's presence before he went too far with his dormant yet very real and alive memories. "Na…nahi kuch bhi nahi…bus yunhi kuch yaad agaya tha…"

"Aggar koi yaad ankhoon ko yunhi geela karde toh voh yaad bahut khass hoti hain Shaantanu…"Khanak handed him his plate and softly spoke her rmind, she didn't know why but the pain in his eyes was stinging her heart.

"Yaadein toh bahut hain Khanak aur shayad mujhe abb inn he kay saharay jeena hain per kya karo kabhi kabhi Mom, Daadi, aur Bhabhi kay saath bitaye huye voh pal kuch zaayda he yaad aatey hain…main kitna bekhabar tha na…kitna careless, kabhi parva he nahi ki kay voh sub kuch aik din badal jaaye ga…sub bikhar sa jaye ga…" Shaantanu said in a broken tone while staring at his plate and the food that Khanak had decorated in it for him.

"Abhi bikhra hain Shaantanu per hum samaet le gay…Aik aik kar ke sub vapis jur le gay…app kyun apnay app ko itna kamzoor kar lete hain…"Khanak responded softly and then walked over to Shaantanu who was trying his level best to keep his tears from spilling. "Mujhe bilqual acha nahi lagta jub app iss tarah udhass hote hain…"

She gently placed her hand on his left shoulder and felt the slight shiver that his pain was causing him. His eyes were tightly closed because he knew her touch would definitely break him down completely. He had kept this flood from surfacing and some how succeeded for some time, but his attempts were no longer supporting his faade.

He was lost, confused, disappointed, angry, and a million other things that one could balme himself for. She was the first person who had cared, cared enough to ask to reach out to him. His heart had already given her a special place the day she found him wandering the market alone and upset. She could have easily passed him by like several other strangers that night, but she didn't…she had stopped…stopped for him and him only…Despite being a complete stranger she somehow fixed him…temporarily but fixed…he felt fixed, he was fixed…in her presence and with her.

"Khanak hum sub theek kar le gay…? Sub phir se vapis phelay jaisa hojaye ga…" Shaantanu questioned him with innocence, there was uncertainty and doubt in his eyes and Khanak nodded her head in agreement, she wanted to believe in the possibility of what Shaantanu was yearning for so badly like a child. She fought with her own tears as his flowed freely.

Their eye contact remained intact for a moment before Shaantanu wrapped his trembling hands around her standing figure. She held him tightly and strongly, like a feeble child wanting to be hugged and caressed. His sobs were audible now; she could feel his tears seep through her chiffon shirt, the salt in his eyes was a part of her exsistence now. He cried freely for the first time in days, for the first time his heart felt its own beat…he was human and Khanak had helped him prove it.

Khanak was holding him by his shoulders at first, but then she slowly ran her fingers through his thick hair as if wanting to soothe his angony, he was well aware of her touch and close proximity because his conscious could never let her frangance out of his senses…even his unconsciousness could never forget her imprint on it, he would never let it.

"Bus kijeeiyay Shaantanu…sambhale khud ko…please…" Khanak consoled him further as his sobs were slowly fading in her grip.

Shaantanu loosened his grip on her slowly and took control of his emotions as he knew that Khanak was getting worried for him and his condition. As their eyes found one another, the physical contact between them diminished. Khanak's drew her hands back as Shaantanu felt his face to wipe away the moisture from his tears.

"Kaaha thanda hojaye ga… chalay shuru karay…" Khanak smiled softly and moved his plate closer to him again as he had pushed it away from himself earlier.

Shaantanu watched her as she took out a piece of bread for him and placed it on the corner of his plate before walking back to her place which was in the chair in front of him. She waited for him to take his first bite and he obliged knowing that she wouldn't have it any other way. They shared a meal together while stealing quiet glances in between.

"Khanak abb tumhari lyrics ki bari…"Shaantanu reminded Khanak as he helped her box the leftovers in the tiffin.

"Jee mujhay yaad hain Shaantanu...vahaan mera bag para hua hain app voh lay aaye please jub tak main yeh sub vaapis rakhdo…"Khanak requested Shaantanu and went off to put the boxes in her basket in the back room.

"Jee Ms.Lyricist…! Main abhi laaya…" He said excitedly after Khanak who was pleased to have him back in his usual comic self.

Mathur's Household

Adi was surprised to enter an empty house as it was close to 9:00 at night and there was no obvious reason for Khanak's absence. At first he got a little worried but figured that she must be out with her gang as he himself had told her not to stay alone at night.

For the first time in years Adi fixed himself dinner all by himself. He was missing his Chutki but then he realized that his Chutki won't be around forever and that one day she'll be responsible for someone else's dinners and meals. Adi smiled proudly looking at their picture that Khanak had displayed on their small fridge with magnets.

Adi was tensed when he left Mumbai but the long drive to Manali had cooled him down and gave him a chance to think thoroughly about his life so far. He had decided not to forget Sunil Khandelwal's words but at the same time he vowed to not let Mr.Raichand down. He was determined to get Mr.Raichand a bigger and better deal in his textile business. Sunil Khandelwal motivated Adi towards competition and now it was Adi's goal to meet that competition. He was honest and upfront, just the type of a person Adi expected. He was able to tolerate anything and everything except dis-honesty; he didn't mind Sunil's brutality because his it was honest. He would give Sunil Khandelwal a proper answer when the right time comes around with the right opportunity.

hei imane,
just now i read the update..awesome..akshay confronting his dear dad was simply superb..loved when akshay said he'll still go to manali to meet his little bro..so sunil is thinking abt his decision being wrong but not ready to accept it yet..loved shaan-khanak in the shop..i expected such thing to happen when khanak went near him to bring him out of his thoughts n he did found his solace in her..loved that shanak moment..finally adi bhaiya determined to get bigger offer for Mr.Raichand..really i liked the way he took sunil's words positively to motivate himself instead of feeling bad n having a grudge towards him..so how will adi bhaiya react when he sees khanak returning with shaan..waiting for ur next update..
