Part 5 A
A week later, Wednesday, May 25, At the Set-site
It's been a week and still Shaan couldn't take that smile, those angelic eyes through which the world's best laughter was reflected in, and that serene, peaceful face out of his mind. All he could think about was that laughter, which was music to his ears. He couldn't forget that smile, that lights up the whole room whenever she walked in. Those eyes: which spit fire at him when she fights with him, and they speak eternal bliss when she smiles. Her cheeks that bloat up when she is angry and that form a perfect pink reaching to her eyes when she shies away. He could forget her anything. He was going crazy as he thought about her every day.
Today again he had dreamt about that girl, this time the dream was a bit different. The girl slightly resembled Khanak's hair. As he approached the girl, trying to figure out her face, he heard a loud buzzing noise bothering him. He woke up again with a confused expression. His dreams were getting difficult to decipher each day and confusing as well. He was again late for his work this morning. He had to go to office and finish some office paper work before heading to the Set-site.
He had to meet up with Khanak at the site and he was late. He had rushed out of the house like that. Today's breakfast was a quite affair too. He had rushed quietly without saying a word at the table. He was then occupied in office work. The anticipation in the back of his heart of meeting Khanak made him forget about her for the time being in office. He was so engrossed in his work that he even missed his morning coffee. He finished all his work and was heading to the set-site.
On his way out his phone rang and without looking at the number he spoke chirpily in the phone, "Hello..?" while he took his helmet from his secretary for his bike. He rode his bike to office today because he was in that mood today. His bike came only during his good mood and somehow he felt good about his day.
As he was heading out, he stopped in his tracks as he heard the voice on the other side…
Switch to Khanak's house at 6:55 a.m.
On the other side of the town, Khanak was feeling no better than Shaan. It seems even she couldn't forget those big brown eyes and that endearing face. She couldn't forget his baritone voice that had a ring of its own whenever he spoke her name. That authoritative stance and calm and composed exterior was hard for her to erase from her mind. Her whole week was like hell for her, no matter how hard she tried she couldn't forget him and his eyes. They were etched like a painting in her mind and she often saw herself drawing them subconsciously whenever she was free and thinking about him. It was such a shocking experience for her that she often wondered what was going on with her.
It was a rare experience but it did shock her. She was often reminded of him whenever she wasn't busy. Just for that, she kept herself busy all through out the week. She didn't know how else to tackle this situation. At one side she would think about his irritating nature and on the other side she would think about his amazingly handsome figure and his good looks. She knew she was attracted to him in physical senses. She knew she was walking the dangerous path but yet she was ok with it from the inside.
And like every other day this week, she woke up late again. But unlike other days, she didn't rush straight to the bathroom; she lay awake for few minutes before rushing to get ready. Today was the day the hidden desires of her heart was making its way again to her. She was going to see him today and this unsettled her. She didn't want to be around him. She didn't want to see him again but yet she knew it was inevitable. She slowly got up from bed and dragged herself to the bathroom.
Half an hour later she was downstairs looking all fresh in the eyes of the world but only she knew how she really felt. As she came down, she saw her BIL, sister, Rahul and Priya sitting at the dinning table and finishing their breakfast.
As soon as Khushboo saw Khanak, she called her over, "Khanak, uth gayi? Why were you late this morning? Never mind that. Come, come eat. It's still warm."
Khanak had the lost expression on her face as she slowly dragged her feet to the table, "Good morning everyone."
"Good morning!" Everyone responded back in unison. Rahul and Priya just munched away on the lasts of their toast, while Akshay finished his morning coffee with the newspaper in hand and Khushboo buttered a toast for her.
"Why do you look so dull this morning?" Khsuhboo asked while extending her left hand to retrieve the butter across on the table and applying it on the toast.
This question caused Khanak to jerk away from her reviere, "Nothing Di! I had a sleepless night."
A furrow formed on Khushboo's forehead, "Kyu kiya kar rahi thi tu raat ko?"
Khanak munched away her buttered toast, "Nothing di. Just was nervous because of the project," she lied half-heartedly while looking at her plate.
"You sure?" Khushboo paused at her task and looked at her trying to confirm her.
Khanak wipped her hands and face before answering her while trying to make herself look busy by getting ready to leave the house so her sister can't see right through her. She knew that if Khushboo looked long enough, Khanak would give away her true self.
"Yes di, I'm sure. I was just nervous about this project and hence I stayed up most of the night. Nothing big."
Khushboo somehow narrowed her eyes for a bit then then let it go.
"Acha di, main chalti hoon, main pehle se hi late ho gayi thi ab aur ho jaongi." Khanak grabbed her bag and was about to step out when Khushboo called out to her.
"Arre sun! Tonight you have to be home early, ok?"
Khanak turned around to face her sister, "Why?"
"Because Mr. Mehra has called us over for dinner tonight because they have a party at their house." Khushboo said it non-challantly while she put away kids' lunch in their bag.
Rahul shouted, "Yea Khanak mausi you have to come!!"
"Or we will get bored, like always, without you," Priya whined along with Rahul.
Khanak smiled at the kids and without saying a word just walked out the door after saying her good bye. She didn't want to break the kids' heart so she neither promised them nor denied them. She didn't want to go to Mr. Mehra for some party. She hated parties and this was no exception. It's not like she had any plans for the night but she didn't feel upto it. She wanted to spend her time alone at home doing some light reading and work on the project.
Project brought her back to the present situation. She was late for her shop and she had to hurry. Today she had to finish another painting before heading to the set-site. She also had to get some other things done and she had very little time.
She parked her cycle in the usual spot outside her shop as she entered it. She greeted Ruby and went straight to the back room to drop off her bag and everything else.
"Ruby, did we get any new order?" Khanak asked Ruby while tying her paint-stained apron around her before taking up the task again.
"No. No new order," Ruby told khanak while looking over some items on sale.
Khanak absent mindedly went about doing her work.
"However, Shaantanu…" Ruby stalled a bit due to her concentration on the task at hand.
Meanwhile Khanak had paused at her work. The name caused her to stop for a millisecond and take it in. Her hand was left hanging in mid-air, while she looked into the painting but her mind and heart was set somewhere else. The name caused her to think about their trips and falls, mainly her falling in his arms. She gulped down before clearing her throat to let Ruby know to finish her sentence.
"Shaantanu…what Ruby?" Khanak asked her in the most casual tone she can come up with. She didn't want to sound too eager but yet wanted to let Ruby know that she was interested in knowing but in business sort of way.
"Haan sorry…yea Shaantanu called and he asked about you. He wouldn't tell me first what it was but when I told him that you haven't come yet, few minutes later he called again and confirmed about your meeting with him. It was strange though."
"What was strange, Ruby?" Khanak asked while working on a firm brushstroke on her latest work.
"It was strange because he called first time to ask about you and when I told him you were not there, he hung up with a word. Then few minutes later he calls again and confirms your meeting. I mean if that's what he had called for in the first place, why not ask me that the first time? His behavior was really strange. If I hadn't known any better I'd say he wanted to hear you or talk to you and that would lead me to believe that he fancy you."
Khanak continued her work without a word to Ruby like it didn't really affect her. But the news affected her big time because warm colors reached the already pink of her cheeks making her blush uncontrollabley.
The rest of her stay at the shop was spent her finishing the painting and collecting items for the project and going over their past week's order. She tried to finish as much as she could before heading to the site. She was doing bigger tasks on purpose so she could delay meeting him. That is exactly what she did because she was running late to the site.
Set site- 1:15 p.m.
Shaan was managing the area. Instructing everyone on how to put things together and presentable before Khanak arrives.
Where is that girl? She is 15 mins late. Shaan wondered as he checked his watch for the umpteenth time.
For the next 5 minutes, Shaan worked the same way instructing from time to time and checking his watch and the door for Khanak's arrival. Just as he turned himself away from the door, Khanak walked in clutching her bag and balancing her project related stuff.
She walked in while searching for something in her bag. She keeps walking and she finally finds it but she drops it by accident. She bends down to pick it up and as she is on the floor, that sametime she feels someone colliding with her bent back and falling over her.
Shaan was backing away as he was instructing someone and just double checking if it looked good from far. As he was backing over, he wasn't paying attention behind him because he was so engrossed that all of a sudden he feels someone behind him and before he can balance himself, he finds himself on the floor on his behind.
"What the hell…?" without meaning to, like a human nature does, he cursed, "Bloody bas***d…" He then looked up to see who it was with whom he collided and he found the perfect picture of an angle in front of him.
Khanak had stood up to apologize and see who fell due to her and she was shocked to find Shaan cursing and on the floor.
Shaan did a double take to her looks and checked her out: she was dressed in white skirt and a yellow top, her hair was pushed back in a pony tail with few errands coming out of the sides making her look even more beautiful and a light make-up, just a simple kajal and faded lip gloss to bring out her facial features. She was dressed simple and looked simple. Nothing too extravagant and nothing too simple but yet enough to make head turn twice at least and with Shaan it looked like she was a fairy sent from above.
Khanak felt his gaze upon her and felt him checking her out but she kept herself composed but the blush was slowly creeping up her face. She felt the hair on the back of her skin standing up but thankfully due to the lighting, no one could see her state. She extended her hand to help him up.
In a trance Shaan extanded his hand in hers to be helped by her that he forgot that he just fell down due to her.
Khanak helped him up and he was so close to her that she looked up at his extended figure as he came close to her with each move of his standing position. It was her turn to check him out, he was dressed in black t-shirt and jeans, making the informal look to a formal one. His aviators pushed back on his head and a deep look in his eyes. She was lost in them, yet again. They were still holding hands looking in eachother's eyes when…………….
