*.::CHAPTER 14::.*

Khanak turned on her back, as she slowly woke up from her sleep. She stared at the open balcony door, and smiled a little at the recollection of last night events. She bit her lip as she turned to her side and saw Shantanu sleeping on his stomach, his face to her side, a little drool dripping out of his mouth. She touched his nose with her index finger in the slightest of touch, 'I am glad about what happened last night,' she whispered, 'I don't regret anything.'

She got out of the bed and went to the bathroom.

'um...Khanak light band kar yaar!' Shantanu stirred a little as the sunlight poured into the room disturbing his sleep. He put Khanak's pillow over his head, 'Khanak?!' he called out to her again.

'Shaan I am brushing my teeth! You close the drapes if they are troubling you!'

Shantanu turned on his back and pulled himself up by his elbows as he looked around the with eyes half open, he saw his shirt thrown near the bed, he got up and retrieved it from the floor and pulled it on in a quick graceful movement. He smiled as he saw the lock which he had given Khanak on the floor, 'thanks buddy.' he whispered as he winked at it.

'uh… Khanak? You… wanna catch breakfast?'

'would love to, but there is a slight problem.'

'what?'

'it's one in the afternoon, all we will get is lunch.'

'hmm… that's fine too, right?'

'yup. But I need to get ready first.'

'ya, me too…' he grabbed his shoes and started to put them on, 'I will meet you at the shack in half an hour. Okay?'

'ya sure,' agreed Khanak from the bathroom.

'Um… well then … bye?'

'bye Shaan.'

Shantanu raked his hands through his hair casually as he looked around the room one more time before opening the door. He looked out and saw the one person he had hoped not to see.

'hey Tashu! What up?'

Natasha's eyes travelled down Shantanu's body, 'let me see… hair in disarray, shirt completely unbuttoned, pants creased, shoes half worn and coat in hand… that is what is up!'

'whatever.' Shantanu opened his room and went inside.

'whatever! You say whatever to This!' Tashu hissed.

'woman chill.'

'really that is what you are going to say to me after I catch you sneaking out of Khanak's room at…' she looked at her watch, 'one o'clock in the afternoon! After a night filled with booze and first kisses!'

'It's not what it looks like,' replied Shaan as he retrieved his favorite grey shirt, 'we just slept together…'

'just slept together! you make it sound like it's something you do every other day. Wait you do, do it every other day, but not with my best friend!'

Shantanu raised his eyebrow at her comment, signaling her that she had gone far.

'sorry, shouldn't have said that! But this is Khanak! She is like a sister! And it's you!'

'what is so god awful about that?!'

'really?! Fine, bone head I will give you a quick re-cap. You and Khanak met on diwali where you saved her, like a hero, thanks for doing that BTW. Then you met at Rohan's parents anniversary weekend, where the both of you Kissed! But then like to idiots pretending to be "rational" and "intelligent" you both decided to be "just friends"… but you both are insanely attracted to one another, but don't want to get into a relationship, but then you sleep together, and then you say and I quote, "what is so god awful about that?!"!'

Shantanu gave Tashu a blank stare, 'breath.'

'URGH!' Tashu sat on the sofa with a thud, 'you both…the both of you… you two are the dumbest people I know! You slept with her! And now where do you think things will go? Back normal?!'

'yes…'

Tashu slapped her hand on her forehead, 'Ow!' she whispered as she buried her face in her lap, trying to think of the appropriate words.

Shantanu smiled, 'Tashu, Khanak and I we are great friends we can get through anything.'

'no…no you can't, Shantanu… the two of you, you have an undeniable pull, and right things are going great and you are friends, but what if?'

'what?'

'what if you guys are never go back to being friends…'

'that won't happen… trust me, because...' Shantanu stopped talking as they heard a knock on the door. Shantanu got up and opened the door.

'hey you ready?'

'nope, and come on in.'

Khanak walked in and saw Tashu, 'hey what are you doing here?'

'trying to understand how you and genius here,' she pointed at Shantanu, 'thinks that after sleeping together you both will be able to get back to being friends…'

'you told her we slept together?' she looked at Shantanu.

'I just said, "we just slept together…" she didn't let me finish.'

Khanak looked at Tashu, 'I know how this looks like, but we just slept together. Just.'

'really?! You being so casual about it?!'

'Uh! Fine I will tell you what happened last night.'

'I am all ears…'

'well…um… Shaan, gave me a lock.'

'lock?'

'ya, it's very sweet….' Khanak said with a smile.

'how?'

'the lock symbolized our friendship.'

'how?' she repeated her question.

'I locked the lock, and threw the key, symbolizing that our, Khanak and my- friendship is now locked, sealed, and the key that can open this lock has been thrown and no one can find that small thing, thus that lock can never be opened... the same way our friendship can never be broken.'

Tashu looked at him, her mouth slightly ajar; she then looked at Khanak, 'please tell me you kissed him then! If you didn't then I will!' she then looked at Shantanu, 'dude! I didn't know you could be so… fantastic!'

Shantanu smiled, 'I have my moments.'

'I wish Rohan had such moments…'

Khanak cleared her throat, 'yes I kissed him then…'

Tashu clapped her hand, 'thank god you did! Otherwise I would have kicked you!'

Khanak raised her eyebrow, 'moving forward…'

The Previous night….

Shaan moved closer and gave her a quick peck on her lips, she gasped as his lips moved away, he looked at her face, her eyes were closed, in anticipation of the kiss, he kissed her eyes lids, as she gasped the moving to the other one, and he then kissed her jaw and finally her lips...

His hand still held her hand in which she had the lock, he tightened his grip on it and they hugged, removing all distance between them. Khanak pushed him slightly to the wall as they continue to kiss passionately. He held her hands behind her back... as he turned as pushed her to the wall. His lips travelled down her neck.

'We might regret this...' Khanak said between gasps.

Shaan removed his lips from the neck and travelled to her ear as he whispered, 'we might... do you care?' he asked before kissing her ear.

'In this moment I don't care about anything...'

Shaan looked at her, and smiled, 'me too...'

They locked lips passionately again... the lock dropped from Khanak's hands as Shaan's hands travelled down her back in a sensuous movement and wrapped his arms around her waist as he pulled her closer, not wanting anything to come between them… he buried his other hand in her hair, as their kiss grew deeper.

Khanak, slowly moved her hands from around his neck, and placed them at his chest, and then slowly moved them down, feeling the contours of his chiseled frame.

They broke their kiss to breath, Khanak turned and pushed him against the wall, as she kissed him on his neck, leaning her body against him. While she slowly un-buttoned his shirt.

Shan pulled her dress to her thigh, 'Khanak…' he whispered. As she pulled of his shirt, moving her lips to his masculine shoulders.

'Shaaa…' Khanak lost balance and fell as she stepped on the lock, with her heel. 'damn! Another failed attempt at being graceful!'

Shaan smiled at his friend's comment, 'well you have me half naked, so I would say it wasn't a complete failure.'

Khanak blushed as she looked up at Shantanu who was without a shirt. 'well you are my friend you are supposed to be sweet and not agree that I am too clumsy…'

'hmm…' Shaan offered his hand, 'but a slight correction.'

'what?' she asked as he pulled her up.

'I am you best male friend.'

Khanak didn't say anything and just looked at him.

'I said male friend since Tashu is your best friend and she is female, this way no competition between Tashu and me…'

'We will regret this…' she whispered.

'what, you sure, you won't regret this?'

Khanak looked into Shaan's eyes, 'we will regret this, how can we not?!' Tashu's word from the morning echoed into her mind, "will you be fine when he wants to go back to his strings of girlfriends?" she stepped away, as she remembered her answer, 'we shouldn't do this… we are great friends, who are insanely attracted to one another, but … we will never be able to go back to being ourselves.'

Shaan looked at the floor as he gave it thought, 'ya… you are right, things might awkward, they are bound to…'

'ya…' Khanak rubbed her arm, with her hand, 'I won't be fine… I – am not capable of doing this with no strings attached.'

'so what do we do now?'

'I don't know… but we have to find a way of, working around our attraction if we want to be friends… which we do or…'

'…start dating?!'

Khanak tilted her head to the right, 'you make it sound so awful.'

'well it is!', he went and sat on the bed, 'I am not capable of having a serious long-time relationship, and I know that I might break your heart, and I will never ever be able to forgive myself.'

'how can you be so sure about this?'

'I am not, but I am not will to take a chance at our friendship… at the possibility of hurting you!'

Khanak sat beside him, 'hmm… but why do you think you can't have a serious relationship?'

'Khanak…I just can't.'

'Once your heart is broken, it takes a lot of strength to be able to love again… is that it?'

'yes, and that I haven't found that strength in me, and I doubt I ever will…'

'hmm…'

'do you want us…?'

'No,' Khanak whispered.

'why?'

She smiled as she looked at him, but her eyes held sadness, 'you can say I don't have the strength either… or that I am scared.'

'scared?'

Khanak took a pillow and passed Shaan the other one, as she lay on the bed, 'yup. I am scared.'

Shaan turned to look at her, 'will you tell me why?'

'It's a long story.'

'I am ready to listen, if you want to tell me.'

'I am not ready…'

Shaan lay beside her, 'will you ever be?'

'probably… all you need to know is that I have never felt this way for a guy.'

'well- I will wait, and thank you.'

Silence fell between them, until Shantanu looked at her, 'you want to lay ground rules? So this never happens again?'

Khanak turned to her side, 'Okay. Oo I have number one.'

'what is it?' he asked as he turned to his side.

'No flirting.'

'Veto!'

'why?'

'we have to flirt it Is second nature to us! We will break the first rule on day 1.'

'you are right, okay amendment made, no heavy flirting, only fun, friendly flirting.'

'O…kay! Have number two.'

'shoot…'

'and so the both of you were up making ground rules?'

'yup! That's why I said, "we just slept together", because we fell asleep…'

'oh! Thank god! Otherwise it would have been soo awkward! Between the two of you! I think.'

'ya well that's why I thanked the lock this morning.'

Tashu looked at Khanak, 'good call.'

'thank you, and I told you I won't let it happen.'

'Oh please! The lock didn't let it happen!'

'I second Tashu on that, otherwise I am too hot to resist!'

'fine! let's just get something to eat, lets go to the shack.'

'Ya, I will get Rohan, you guys proceed.'

'good food. I think I ate a bit too much, though.'

'Tashu you always eat a bit too much for your size.'

'you do want to be my boyfriend right?'

They all laughed at Tashu's question.

'lets go for a walk?'

'I will escort Tashu.'

Rohan looked at Shantanu, 'why?'

'Are you jealous?'

'No, I am happy to go with Khanak, My lady?' Rohan offered his hand to Khanak as he pulled her chair.

Khanak smiled as she took his hand, 'oh thank you my sir.'

Tashu smiled as she got up, 'nautanki!'

Khanak stuck her tongue out at Tashu, as Rohan and she continued to walk.

Tashu wrapped her arm around Shantanu's arm as they started to walk.

'what do you want to talk about?'

'why do you think I want to talk about something?'

'because… we are walking ten feet behind those two,' she pointed at Khanak and Rohan, 'and you look like you are weighing words. And I know that look very well; we writers do that a lot.'

Shantanu smiled, 'I just wanted to ask… why you reacted the way you did before?'

'well… because I love the two of and even though I think "being friends" is the stupidest idea you both could have come up with, I…also do truly believe you both aren't ready for each other … as of now.'

'you lost me.'

Tashu took a deep breath, 'good I don't think you are ready for the truth, for what I see.'

'and that is… that me and Khanak should start dating?!'

'yes.'

'that is ridiculous, we are poles apart!'

'really?! Think hard, are you both really poles apart?'

'what do you mean?'

'Shantanu, strip out the layers that both of you have, at the end, you will find that both of you are really very similar, and in the ways you aren't, those differences actually work for you.'

Shantanu gave it a thought, 'whatever!'

'It's a fact, both of you are bound to fall for one another, sooner or later…'

'No we won't! I will hurt Khanak, I will break her heart! And loose her! Tashu… I really like Khanak and I want her in my life, I want things to remain the way they are!'

'and you really think that you won't lose her if things remain the way they are!'

'what is that supposed to mean?!'

Tashu turned to Shantanu and looked him in the eyes, 'you really think things will remain this way!? Shantanu, Khanak is a beautiful, young, passionate, single woman. Sooner or later she will find someone who will love her. Who she will start loving too, she will be in a relationship with another man, and so you really think a guy will be ready to share her with you! That he will not object to your midnight meals, and early morning coffee's. Do you think he will be okay with the fact that the two of you are so close that to an outsider you look like a perfect couple. That she was attracted to you and you to her, that you kissed, almost slept together!'

Shantanu raked his hand through his hair, 'you point?'

'that he will make her choose Shantanu, he will make her choose whether she wants to have her Saturday dinner with you or go with him to a party or a romantic dinner! Whether she wants to share her morning coffee with you or him… and she will choose Shantanu, and she might choose him.'

'so I should date her?!'

'No idiot! I just wanted you to know things wont remain the same forever, so figure out what you want, what you need, and don't worry about what you are afraid of… don't let what you think will happen keep you from realizing what you actually feel.'

Tashu touched his shoulder and rubbed her hand on it in a sisterly fashion. Tashu then walked towards Khanak and Rohan who were running around the beach, playing tag, 'hey I want to join in!'

Shantanu looked at Khanak who was smiling and laughing, her hair flowing behind her as she ran, and jumped.

'The problem is that I don't know what I want Tashu…' he whispered to himself.
