Hey Sid, even I have many times wondered the same. When it comes to passionate scenes, or eyelock scenes, its always the gal who shies off. Atleast RBO is different in that respect. We had the guy trip and the gal save him from fall (just b4 the KKH song sequence) and eylock happens. Infact in that sequence in many places we see khanak looking staright into his eyes where as shaan, shies off when he is caught admiring.

But in this case this is what I wud say, Shaan just b4 kissing khanak, b4 khanak fell and also when he wanted to kiss her after she fell, first made it a point to look at what she was feeling. Why did he have to do that - bcoz he is not sure himself if khanak wants him - he is still confuded, so wants to confirm her feelings fr him b4 kissing her - just like a gentleman.
