But had you been married to the maharaj types in the first 3 yugas, maybe you could have been married to Vishnu. Now what would it be - marriage to Vishnu and participating in an Ashwamedha, or lose the Ashwamedha but give up getting Vishnu as well? Hmmmmm????

I recall Chen2 explaining that the only reason that KSK were involved in Dasharath's yagna was that it was a Putra-kshameshthi yagna, unlike Rama's yagna, which among its other goals, was to atone for Ravan's brahm-hatya. Therefore, from a poetic standpoint, Sita, who was the cause of Ravan's end, couldn't possibly be there. I don't think it would have been an issue for subsequent yagnas, if, say, the Ananda Ramayan was correct and Sita was re-united w/ Rama after her underground break.

Btw, I read some explanation recently (forgot where; I am under temporary alzheimers after the Memorial day long weekend; weather is too nice to be spent thinking too much 😆😆😆) that Krishna had so many wives because of the number of Asvamedha yagnas performed by Rama. Only, they did not explain what the relation is to getting many wives in the next birth if one does Asvamedha yagna in the previous birth.

Ananya would probably know. She is the Sanskrit scholar here.

Hmmm??? Now, that is a tough one. I think I would have been Vishnu's not so prominent wife then I would be standing on the sidelines watching the prominent queens making fools of themselves. 😆😆😆

Krishna had 16108 wives. Rama did 1001 yagnas - the 1 where he lost Sita, and 1000 after (there is still my nagging issue about the 11000 year breakdown, but I'll suspend that for the time being). So if one does 1 yagna, does one get 161 wives the next birth? In which case, I wonder what were the next births of other Ikshvaku vansh rulers like Raghu, Dileepa, Sagar, et al? Particularly Dileepa, since he performed 100 such yagnas?😃

We need Vibs now to give us the correct reply. I guess we have to wait until she is back from vacation. 😃

Who knows? Maybe Dilipa was reborn as some rich sheik with a huge harem. 🤣

I divided wrong. The ratio is ~16, so not so bad. Dilipa's next birth would have had a mere 1600 wives. Incidentally, how many did the Hawaian ruler Kamehameha have?

Between 25-32 wives, I think.

Just 23 to go - go ahead - I know you can do it. Hit Goldie before this serial ends!

This is really lonely w/o Vibs, Chen2, Mallika, et al.

Sorry Chandra and everyone else. Have been tied down to mundane activities for the last 1 week that it has been difficult to steal time for myself. And when your mother-in-law is around, you can imagine how things are. You got to act goody goody when you are not used to being so 😉. I'm sure the womenfolk here agree 😉. Anyways am back today and am yet to read thro' all the posts here. In fact I caught up with Ramayan (so called) episodes from last Friday, only today.

Ananya, u r making the wife obselete. 😭😭😭 Seriously speaking, there is a role for wives in the shradh. The rituals last for 13 days. For the first few days the wife has to be present in the background. During the middle and final days the wife takes part in the actual shradh ceremony. I was standing behind my husband and pouring water on the darba he was holding and doing other things. I was required to be there. Only if the wife had been ill they would have put another darba next to the husband (this darba would have signified me and has a different significance from the darba my husband was holding to do the rituals). One of the priests would have done the things I would have done had I been present.

The length and the duration of the rituals vary by community but in all communities the married man has to have his wife with him. Of course, I do not know much about tribal communities but communities belonging to the varna system have this requirement.

I second this! I too have been brought up with the belief that a married man cannot do any rituals without his wife. And for a Shradham, as Khalrika said the Darbha is placed. Without his wife, a husband cannot perform even wedding ceremonies of his own son. And I have always stood beside my husband when he does Shradham for his father (bcoz I'm required to), though I do not do anything other than touching him with the darbha and starving along. 😉
