I read this one in a printed version of the RCM in the Vedanta Soc, SF a year ago. There, they had every verse of Tulsidas in Hindi, followed by English translations (I'm forgetting offhand whether they had transliterated versions of the verses as well).

To be honest with you, it did strike me as strange, since at the time, poets and authors, afaik, didn't have the policy of writing appendices. This chapter was titled 'Luv-Kush kand' - and had the account of Luv & Kush, but it was very different from Valmiki's Uttarkand, and not merely in the details of Luv-Kush. It missed the entire narration of Ravan's history, pushed back Shatrughan's war with Lavanasur to the time of the Ashwamedha yagna, and at the end of Rama's rule, placed Luv & Kush in Punjab, instead of Kosala. It was a very strange reading of the story, and not merely different in relatively minor details (such as 'who downed Lakshman - Indrajit or Ravan?')

You could be right that it could have been added by another author, but who? and why? The way it was written, it certainly didn't make the Raghu's look all that virtuous, which is what left me appalled after reading it. Note that I read this of printed material, and not a website, although a website exoticindiaart.com did have a table of contents on that, which included the Luv-Kush kand.

Do you know where the origin of Luv-Kush's war with Rama originated, if it wasn't RCM? It certainly wasn't Valmiki. The ACK, where I originally read the story some 30 years ago, and which has this, credits its source as Uttara Ramacharita of Bhavabhuti, but doing a search on that on Google books, I saw an account of a battle between Luv and Lakshman's son Chandraketu, which was inconclusive and stopped by Rama.

The thing that puzzles me about this is that while it's neither in Valmiki, and seemingly its origin in Tulsidas is questionable, it's nonetheless worked its way into Hindu folklore to the point that it's an assumed fact about Kush & Luv, despite no sourcing. Any idea what's the origin of this?

P.S. Proves our Rakshasha kul has the greatest diversity in beauty - on the Mr/Miss Bhoomi-devi side of the scale, our very own Indrajit and Dhanyamalini, and on the other end of the scale, the nominees I picked. Even our Avadh pales in comparison 😆😆😆
