@ Janki I know ur point''lakshmana was not a rude person'he never hold any grudges against anyone..but his relationship with urmila isn't told in any versions infact its quite questionable'..if we look at major sources like valimiki ramayan and tulsidas Ramayana one cant even deduce how was he as a husband''. he didn't even bid farewell to this griefstricken wife''I m always surprised to see this unfair treatment'' tulsidasi and valmikiji has dedicated so many epi to ram and sitaji but never ever once mentioned the pain and sacrifice of urmila'..
even mithalishrangupt and shri rabindranath tagore mentioned the unfair treamtment by valmiki and tulsidasji and lakshmana on urmila
in the other version and in many forlktales of MP UP and rajasthan it is stated lakshman observed strict celibacy
in krittivassi ramayana it is said a person who observes celibacy for forteen years will able to kill meghnaand now if we look at the rule of celibacy we will find tht celibacy means not only avoidance of physical proximity between man and woman but also a man shouldnt think of a woman...its mental and physical avoidance too
here are eight aspects of brahmacarya, as described in Sridhara Swami's commentary on Srimad-Bhagavatam 6.1.12:
smaranam kirtanam kelih
preksanam guhyabhasanam
sankalpo 'dhyavasayas ca
kriya-nirvrttir eva ca
One should not:
- Think about women.
- Speak about sex life.
- Dally with women.
- Look lustfully at women.
- Talk intimately with women.
- Decide to engage in sexual intercourse.
- Endeavor for sex life.
the first rule say person shouldnt remember woman going by this rule if lakshman was observing celibacy and he killed meghnand then he didnt remember urmila at all 'his wife?? wasn't tht rude?
coming to the folktale of uttarpradesh rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh lakshmana is shown as unmarried guy as he wanted to serve his brother without any distractions...he pledge to dedicate his life in the service to his brother
urmila is not known tribal ppl in these part''..it is stated in gondi ramayna lakshmana didn't married before going to forest he refused to marry as he wanted to serve his brother ''.In the Rajasthani folk narratives of the Ramayana, we learn that in order to kill Ravan, Ram needed to liberate Ravan's soul locked in the nostril of one of the horses that pulled the chariot of the sun-god. Only a celibate man could do this. Since Laxman was not married (the local version is ignorant of Laxman's wife, Urmila, who he left behind when he followed Ram) he was able to shoot an arrow that struck the nostril of that horse which pulled the sun-god's chariot. As a result, Ravan's soul was no longer hidden and Ram was able to kill Ravan.
whtever the case may be it was clear from these folktales lakshmana didnt wanted to marry he wanted abos**te dedication maybe here they are showing his dilemma his reluctance which is mistaken as his rudeness towards her ...he wasn't ready to marry as for him his brother comes first he was a part soul of rama a god himself maybe he knew the calamity tht will befall on urmila... may be he was sad to see her undergoing the torment for no reason ...Ghurye a famous writer presents ... line role-analysis of Lakshmana, as the 'most heroic though tragic character' . Lakshmana is forced to do things which he fully knows is fraught with disaster.maybe he was knowing the consequences of the event his mixed emotions was so apparent wen he was dressing as groom
honestly i prefer to see this confused emotionally drenched lakshmana then to see him all lovey dovey to urmila and suddenly ready to leave her...makes more sense to me thts my POV
and regarding the bold step taken by URMILA I know the character were pious and seldom we see the mythos character going out of the way... but its not the case we haven't seen any mytho character meeting with their man before marriage... if we look at SATI PARVATI SHAKUNTALA all met their man before marriage'sati and parvati were goddess...they even broke the strict rules of the society that too in the satyayug ...shakuntala was also a gurukanya most scared one still her love made her break the shackles of the world.(there may be other examples too )... urmila here is a sacred one not a ultimate divine lady...(i m bit skeptical of her being a amsa of mahalakshmi as sita wasnt her real sister she was a adopted one in the valmiki ramayana it is said the sisters were pious as sita but i didnt read tht she was amsa of mahalakshmi i think i need to read it again)'
she was pious but at the same time in love'.she had doubted his abilities she must be restless hence it compelled her to break the rule and met him to apologize she knew the maryada but was hopelessly in love... love that force u to go against set standards of life..
The relation here is depicted as more of akbar to jodha and meera to krsihna'a man who married for the sake of family and then fall for her I would love to see the pain in his eyes wen he will leave urmila after seeing this reluctant lakshman hesitating to marry'..
I m really bad at all this but thts my point and thts wht is holding my interest in the show a different dimension of urmila and lakshmana something unexplored yet interesting
hope i didnt offended anyone😛
