Saint Tyagaraja used to sing his compositions believing that his mother Sita & his Lord Ram are present before him listening to him sing, as you can see in this painting.

Thus, he never made any effort to note down his compositions, his disciples, while listening to him sing, used to note the songs down. A major portion of his incomparable musical work is now lost. Out of 24,000 devotional songs said to have been composed by Saint Thyagaraja, only about 700 songs are available today.

Out of his songs that I had the good fortune of listening to, & I've listened to a few, his well-known song, "Maa Janaki" remains my absolute favourite.
Note that I don't understand Telugu, so always had to ask those who knew the language for the translation. 😆

About this song by Saint Thyagaraja, Maa Janaki, if you ask my opinion, the beauty of this song is beyond comparison. It's not a long composition, but simply beautiful.

As you'll note while reading it's English translation, it's titled, "Maa Janaki" but Saint Thyagaraja is addressing Lord Ram in this song, and is talking about mother Janaki. 😊

So without any further ado, here's an English translation of Saint Thyagaraja's

"Maa Janaki."

You became very famous because you married Mother Janaki!!
O Most excellent of Emperors!
O Lotus Eyed!
Listen; your great fame as vanquisher of Ravana also is because you married Mother Janaki!!
Having come along with you to the forest,
donning shadow form following your command, having remained in Fire-God in Her true form,
having gone as shadow along with Ravana – the demon,
having remained at Lanka under the Ashoka tree,
having not reduced Ravana to ashes by her eyes by controlling her anger & not getting enraged by his words,
O spouse of Lakshmi!
O nourisher of this Thyagaraja!
Did Mother Janaki not bring great fame to you alone?

You can listen to this song rendered beautifully by a renowed classical singer, here:

There's lots of story still left, even if they show only up to the coronation of Lord SitaRam, and skip Uttarkand.
