Good morning friends. Thanks a lot for the info you all shared here regarding the ancient time's Idol worship,[ idolatrism] and the importance given to images of God at that time. Grateful to my friends who shared their knowledge and views here with all of us.❤️🤗
There are many references regarding the idol worship in Puranas, Upanishads and Ithihasas, Smritis and Samhitas.
But Vedas preaches differently regarding this idol worship [ sharing the info here from Vedas] ---
"There is no image of Him. He is unborn and He should be worshipped" (Yajurveda, Chapter 32, Verse 3)
"God is bodyless and pure" (Yajurveda, Chapter 40, Verse 8)
I think nature worship was started by the ancient man [ God] because of the stunning power of the Sun, Milk Ocean[ Antarctica??? ], and volcanic eruptions etc , they thought that nature is all powerful and even Gods asked the Rishis to worship the Ashta Digpalaks first before starting penance or Yaga or Yajna!
But Vedas taught us differently--
Monotheism in Rigveda
"Say this, all one God in many names" (Rigveda, Book 1, Hymn 164, Verse 46)
"Do not worship anyone besides him alone, praise him alone" (Rigveda, Book 8, Hymn 1, Verse 1)
"Praise him would matchless and alone" (Rigveda, Book 6, Hymn 45, Verse 16)
From Bhagavad Gita
"Those whose intelligence has been stolen by material desires, they worship demigods" (Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 7, Verse 20)
But as far as we know, Idol worship is a part of Hinduism, to be precise, a part of many religions, A star, and the moon crescent, in the form of nature they worship him, in the form of Cross, they worship Him and his sacrifice, in the form of Book, the Guru Granth they worship, and in many of our houses we keep Bhagavad Gita in the place of worship .
Idol worship was always a part of Indian culture. In our ancient Indus Valley, civilization (3500-1500 BC) people were believed to worship the early form of Shiva-- a stone.
Will be back and share more info with you .
