Sita Swayamvar, A canvas.
Where to begin? What to say ? because it is the reunion of Vishnu with His consort Laxmi after a long separation. The love story of Ram and Sita is absolutely exquisite! Even more alluring than the thought of the Love itself!
The morning rays are spreading subtle light on the gardens of Mithila. Lord Ram, Laxman, and the Sage Viswamitra with his other disciples were heading towards Mithila. They saw the path opened to fields of crops as they came closer to Mithila.
Along the roadside were shops displaying countless varieties of shining gems looking like the rainbows strewed all over. Everyone on the street extended respectful greetings as the Muni and the Princes moved slowly. People thronged the sides of the Rajpath to have a darshan of the famous sage and his two illustrious disciples! As Ram smiled at the people, they were filled with a desire to see this handsome & charming prince win the hand of their Princess Sita!
King Janak personally received them and brought them into the cottage adjacent to the Palace and spoke to the sage with joined palms, inquired about the boys and learned that they are the princes of Kosala kingdom. The princes too greeted the King with respect.
Sita's maid saw Ram and went back and started narrating his charming personality to her!. "His astounding personality, royal gait, physique, and graceful smile made him stand out from all the rest of others. Oh.. you should see him once to understand what I say! His physique is that of a well-sculpted statue. Just look at him once Sita!
Sita's parrot started praising his appearance as the sovereign of this universe and repeatedly saying, "Ram, Ram ... break the bow with your valour and muscular arms and bow your head to Sita's beauty with veneration!- Sita is trying to hush up the parrot with mock anger.
When the brothers were strolling in the palace garden, they saw Sita with her friends. Ram was looking at her... she had a slender waist, delicate figure, lustrous black hair, lotus petal-like eyes, and soft, red lips. When she walked, it seemed like she was floating. Smitten by her beauty, Ram stood there like a statue, was unable to turn his eyes from that eyeful Princess. Seeing this new side of his brother, Lakshman was amused.
Her maids pleaded her to lift her eyes once to have a glance at Him! She saw Him once. What to say, that moment was stilled there between them, as if the adorable blue sky smiled at the daughter of the Earth, as if the blue lotus tilted towards the pink lotus with the touch of that romantic Zephyr!
Ram and Sita's attraction for each other was obvious to everyone around them. Deciding that she wanted Prince Ram as her husband, Sita walked towards the nearby Maa Parvathi temple to pray the Goddess.
She bowed her head in front of Devi Maa and prayed,-"Maa..you know the deepest desires that reside in every Kanya's heart. I am waiting for my Swami like a lotus for the full moon! I never prefer to speak my thoughts, but you are a mother, bless us for our Divine Union. Sita bowed to her sacred feet. Seeing her love for her Vishnu, Devi Maa blessed her with a garland that Sita adorned around her neck.
Now breaking the bow was just a formality to please those who were there to witness! When kings and princes got up to break Shiva's bow, Sita and her friends trembled in fear, but Shri Ram remained poised with confidence.
Sita stood there with Varmala at the Swayamvar Hall with maids on her both side. She looked at Ram, feeling a natural attraction for the prince. Once again silently, she prayed Devi Maa asking Her to bless her for her wish-fulfillment. She watched Ram approach the bow ... she felt her love for the Lord being awakened. Was this Vishnu himself? If not, how anyone can attract my attention ?' Becoming absorbed in her loving sentiments, Sita felt anxious. Would Ram string the bow and become my husband?' She held the garland with trembling hands.
While being extolled by Viswamitra and other sages, Ram placed his hand upon the bow. There was complete silence in the hall! King Janak held his breath as Ram stood motionless... Viswamitra, knowing the extent of Ram's power, smiled gently!
Suddenly Ram seized the bow by its middle part and raised it high above his head. A gasp of astonishment filled the hall!! It was inconceivable! Placing one end of the colossal bow on the ground, Ram then moved to the other end and strung it. He pulled the string and bent the bow. It broke suddenly and a sound like the crash of thunder reverberated around the hall. The earth shook, everyone was stunned and rendered senseless for a few moments.
King Janaka was amazed, his eyes were filled with tears. A smile on Sita's tender lips, a fulfillment in her glances. She was filled with delight upon seeing Ram's valorous feat and her heart heaved with excitement. she shyly lifted her eyes a little and looked at Ram, who caught her glance. Both felt their hearts quivered with love. At that moment their union was forged. The moon-faced, the gold-laced, the slow gaited Sita placed the garland around Prince Ram's neck, indicating Her acceptance to Him as Her husband. She blushed slightly and kept her eyes down.
Her maid whispered to her ---"Sakhi Sita...that valorous Ram who could lift Lord Shiva's bow with such ease, can He lift our Sita's floral braided hair while tying the sacred chain around her neck? I know, he will try to touch your neck with his fingertips to tickle His Bride!
Someone exclaimed...If by his very touch even a rock transformed into a woman, I can't imagine with that touch, how much more beautiful our Sita would become!
Another Sakhi teased her by saying, "Sita, when he puts his hands around your neck, don't think that they are the chain of black beads and don't try to hide those behind your pallu!
When they asked her-" have you seen your Ram properly?
Feigning shyness, her lips said I have not seen Him' but her eyes conveyed with a passion...' I cannot reveal!'
The sages recited Vedic hymns continuously and the melodic rise and fall of their metrical chanting filled the festive atmosphere there.
