In Vishnu Purana , Vayu Purana and Padma Purana a curse that Durvasa laid upon Indra is described as the indirect reason for the famous Churning of the ocean .The Bhagavata and Agni Purana also mention Durvasa's involvement in this all-important episode of churning the milky sea . That is his capability and caliber. And he is such a Rishi with many stories explaining his anger and his stony wishes !
The detailed story here --[ from Google]
The story in the Vishnu Purana goes that Durvasa, while wandering the earth in a state of ecstasy due to a vow he was observing, came by a Vidyadhari(a nymph of the air) and demanded of her a heavenly wreath of flowers she was wearing. The nymph respectfully gave the garland to the sage, whereupon he wore it on his brow. Resuming his wanderings, the sage came across Indra riding his elephant, Airavata, attended by the gods. Durvasa, still in his state of frenzy, threw the garland at Indra, who caught it and placed it on Airavata's head. The elephant was irritated by the fragrance of the nectar in the flowers, so it threw the garland to the ground with its trunk. Durvasa was enraged to see his gift treated so callously and cursed Indra that he would be cast down from his position of dominion over the three worlds, just as the garland was cast down. Indra immediately begged Durvasa's forgiveness, but the sage refused to retract or even soften his curse and went on his way. Because of the curse, Indra and the devas were diminished in strength and shorn of their lustre. Seizing this opportunity, the asuras led by Bali waged war against the gods. The gods were routed and turned to Brahma for help. Brahma directed them to seek refuge with Vishnu. Vishnu in turn, advised them to call a truce with the asuras and work together with them to churn the ocean of milk and obtain the Amrita (nectar of immortality), on the pretext of sharing it with them. Vishnu promised that he would ensure only the devas drank the Nectar and reobtain their former power so they could once again defeat the asuras. The devas took Vishnu's advice and called their truce with the asuras and thus did the gods and demons begin planning their great enterprise.
In the same way there are many stories regarding this sage --His anger for king Ambarisha's breaking the fast without feeding him and his curse ,his curse to Shakuntala because she didn't realise his presence when she was daydreaming about King Dushyanta when this sage visited her ,Durvasa and his visit to Ram when he was in conversation with yama was the main cause behind the end of Laxman's Avtar ! He was the same sage who taught Atharvana Veda Mantras to Kunti to invoke any god of her choice to beget children ! And we all know about his visit to Pandavas at the forest with his entourage for having Bhojan at Pandavas house !
He is famous for all these reasons and his interactions with Trimurti [Brahma , Vishnu and Shiva ] were never an incident free !!
If there was one group of people changed the course of the Mahabharata , it was the rishis who played key roles ! We all know how Karna and his birth changed the course of Mahabharata story with his mere presence in Duryodhan's court ! And later how the boon of Durvasa gifted Kunti and Madri the Pandavas !
Such a sage visiting a village function , here I feel it is a factual fallacy, beyond logic. And one more thing , a very sensitive point for all of us [ that's why I asketh for permission !] The rishis never visit any place other than Royals and Brahmins ! They started visiting Krishna at Dwaraka , not in Nandgaon or Brindavan , or Barsana ! Normally the Rishis knows the presence of God precisely with the aura of that place ! And if you remember, after the Rajasuya Yajna Pandavas declared Krishna would be their honored guest , supreme God ! Then Sisupal insulted Krishna as a Yadava king, a cowherd man who is not fit for such a great honour !! That was the social stigma at that time , Because of His Divinity, the Rishis visited Krishna including Narada at Dwaraka , but not prior to that they never visited the Yadava places. Krishna was both Royal as well as a cowherd man!
I feel instead of calling Durvasa , they should've called that Rishi who sat there near the Brindavan from whom Krishna got rice and a pot for preparing Kheer ! Because of this , for the first time I am waiting eagerly for today's episode , with suspence !!!
