"Mahira, will you marry me?"
Mahira watched in utter disbelief as Amaad went down on his knees. In his right hand, she could make out a ring. Her day couldn't get any worse.
Will you marry me?' He asked again, more forcefully this time. The rest of his family stood around waiting for her reply.
She stood silent. She was supposed to say yes. It was for the safety of her sisters and her brother. Khan Begum had threatened their life should she refused. Yet, internally she continued to be torn. Divided. She looked up as her eyes searched for Azaad. There he stood, trying desperately to look away though his eyes were fixed on where Amaad's hand was holding hers. He was angry but controlled.
This serves him right. She thought.
She had approached him, placed her pride away to confront him the other night. To tell him that she too felt the same as he did. But instead of acknowledging how he felt towards her and actually being happy, he hurled abuse at her. Saying that she looked ugly and was not his type. He hurt her. To her core. And now she hoped this proposal hurt him too. But why should it? He didn't like her. He had said strssed that particular point that fateful night.
And then his brown eyes slowly lifted and fixed into hers.There was a shield of tears. He was in pain. She gasped and her breath hitched.
It didn't make sense, she thought. He didn't love her. He said so. He had said he couldn't love her because she was not beautiful. Yet part of her refuse to believe that. Was she just deluding herself at the moment. She tried to turn her gaze down to Amaad. But something in her refused. Her eyes had its mind of its own and just seemed to be fixed at him.
His eyes! She reminded herself. His eyes always revealed the truth. Even when he was silent. How could she forget that? For weeks, since she first came into that house, he had been rude to her. But his eyes always stated something else.
She recalled that when she went to his room to apply the paste on his forehead, she had revealed to him that she had checked his astrology and he was someone special. But he declined to believe her. He also had stated no one could help him. He then grabbed her hand and pushed her outside his room and locked the door. Could his harsh words the other night when she confessed she also liked him, even loved him, be another way for him to push her out with his life?
"Mahira, please answer me. Will you marry me? I promise to always treat you well." Amaad interrupted her thoughts.
To treat her well?! But there was no love there. Definitely not.
Mahira sighed. Why did things have to be so complicated? In the past, she had a crush on Amaad. But now, he was now becoming a nuisance. She looked briefly down at him and then at Azaad. His eyes revealed a certain panic in them. He held his body straight. His eyes quickly glanced at her hands and then back at her again.
What are you trying to say? She asked as she held his gaze. What are you so afraid of?
She closed eyes. Please abbu help me. Please God guide me. What should I do?
Immediately, images of when Azaad had rescued her flashed before her: when he carried her in the forest; when he held her hand to stop her from falling in the house; when he broke her fall as she lost her balance and struggle to breathe on the stairs; and when he saved her when she was a statue. She even had an inkling that he had rescued her when the forest officers were after her though she struggled to remember details. Her thoughts then returned to when she was a statue. He had stopped the men from harming her with a hammer. Then he was crying. Then he had admitted that he loved her when no one else was around. It was his tears that saved her. Surely his tears would not lie. That was a sign of his love for her.
She opened her eyes and looked at him. His words were harsh. His mannerism was harsh too. But his eyes were gentle. She smiled. She had got him right. Outside, he was hard but inside he was soft. Like a coconut. What he looked like externally and what he wanted people to perceive him was not who he truly was on the inside. But he was afraid. Why?! And he was afraid of her coming close. But he did love her. His eyes revealed that. Especially the way they were panicking at this precise moment.
Could she prolong his agony? She asked herself. After all, he needed to be taught a lesson. Mr Darinda. But part of her was torn seeing him this way. What was he afraid of? And why did he think he needed to push away?
She recalled that the Fakir Baba had said that she would find her love in this house. She did. And that her love would give her a lot of pain. He had. But didnt the Fakir Baba also mention that she needed to embrace her destiny and not fight it. Surely her love was her destiny.
She looked down at Amaad. She knew her next decision was going to affect her siblings. She would have to think of another way to save them. And fast.
"Amaad, you are sweet, polite and extremely carrying." From the side glance, she could see Azaad's expression getting worse. Maybe just a bit more suffering. She continued, "You are everything most woman would want. I'm really touched that you are proposing and wanting to marry me." She watched as Amaad's smile widened. He glanced sideways towards his brother and smirked.
Why was he smirking at his brother's distress? Did he know how Azaad felt towards her? Immediately anger flowed through her. She didnt trust Amaad. Something was fishy between the two. And it was now time she put an end to this charade. "But I'm sorry. I cannot marry you at any cost."
"Sorry?" Amaad looked stunned. "What did you just say?"
"I cannot marry you. Not now. Not ever."
"Why?"
"Because I dont need to be treated well. I'm fine on my own. I certainty don't need to be married." She stepped back and glanced at Azaad again. There was relief evident in his eyes as he pushed his shoulders backwards in a stance, and tried to look away.
"Mahira, what is going on? How can you turn down my son's proposal? Follow me. We need to speak. Now." Khan Begum said forcefully.
Mahira followed Khan Begum quietly into her room and waited until the door was shut.
"Mahira, didn't I warn you that you had to say yes to Amaad? Now because of you, your siblings are in danger. Do you not care? Do you not intend to save them?"
"I do care. But I am not willing to marry Amaad."
"You have no choice, Mahira. Go down and say yes to Amaad. Now." Khan Begum commanded.
"Khan Begum, I won't. I don't understand why you want me to marry your son. But if that is the case, i will agree to marriage if it is from Azaad. But not Amaad."
"But Azaad doesn't want to get married." Khan Begum protested as she paced in her room.
Mahira thought for a moment. Neither did she. But she needed to know why Azaad was pushing her away. Maybe this was the only opportunity of her getting closer to him to figure out what and why he was hiding from her. This would also buy her time: to save her siblings and to protect her destiny, her love.
"Khan begum, I don't want to marry either. But to save my siblings, I am willing to marry. But only Azaad. How you convince him it's up to you. The ball is now in your court."
With that, Mahira turned and walked out of the room. Finally, she could sense a bit of control returning to her life.
