Part 8
Asad kept himself between Zoya and the tall man's weapon.
She led the way down the stairs and he followed, feeling the prod of the gun in his lower back.
"To the office," the man behind him grunted. The other two followed, their weapons held loosely.
Zoya visibly shook, but she held herself together. As they moved toward the office, Asad took her cold hand in his and squeezed her fingers.
She squeezed back and held on tight.
Adil's eyes went wide when he saw his cousin, and his grip tightened around the child. "Zoe? Wha"? How"?"
"I followed you out of the trailer. I climbed in the van when you were distracted with Arhaan. What in the world do you think you're doing?" Her low voice vibrated with anger and fear, and Asad wanted to pull her close.
Ignoring them, Imraan told the other two goons, "Check the perimeter. Make sure we don't have a bunch of cops headed our way. There were no outgoing calls made, so we might be all right."
The two slipped out on silent feet.
While Adil's mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water, Imraan said, "You should have kept your nose out of other peoples' business, Zoya."
"You shouldn't kidnap other peoples' children, Imraan."
Imraan's eyes narrowed and he landed a blow to Zoya's face before Asad realized what the man planned.
At her cry, Asad launched himself at Imraan and caught him with an uppercut to the chin. They both went to the floor.

Lightning pain streaked through her head, but Zoya ignored it. She kicked out at the tall man holding the gun on the two men on the floor. She figured he was trying to get a bead on Asad and she couldn't let him do that. The heel of her foot caught him in the knee. He hollered and went down, raising his weapon to aim it at her. Fury spilled from his eyes as he regained his footing. Zoya rolled to her left.
The gun cracked. The bullet hit the floor beside her, spraying her with stinging bits of concrete. Terror held her immobile. Her ears rang from the shot, but she could hear Arhaan crying and Adil cursing. She glanced up.
In her peripheral vision, she saw Adil start to move. Fast.
"You messed up, lady," the tall man said. His finger tightened.
A hand reached out and snagged the man's pants. "Move, Zoya!" Asad yelled.
The man gave a yelp of surprise and went down. But only long enough for Zoya to dart to the couch and crouch behind it. With a growl of rage, her attacker rose again and swung the weapon in her direction.
The warehouse door burst open. "Freeze! Police! Put your weapons down!"
Zoya nearly cried with relief. She saw Asad give another punch to Imraan who landed hard on the floor. Asad took cover beside him.
Imraan's partner forgot about her and spun to fire at the officers spilling through the door.
They fired back and he went down.
Zoya swallowed and scooted around him. Arhaan. She didn't hear him anymore. She got to her feet, frantic to find the baby.
"Hands where I can see them!"
A SWAT member bolted through the door. Zoya lifted her hands, but couldn't take her eyes off the empty couch. "They're gone," she whispered.

Asad kept his forearm against the throat of the lawyer and pressed. The man gagged and went limp. Asad rolled over and spun to see Ayaan covering the man on the floor. No danger there. He got to his feet and went to Zoya who was trying to get out the door. "Zoya, stop!"
"I can't stop! Adil left with Arhaan. I've got to find them!"
She moved toward the door once again and he grabbed her and pulled her back. "You can't. They've got to clear the building."
"And while they're clearing the building, Adil's getting away with Arhaan." She jerked from his grip.
Asad knew she was right. He looked at . Ayaan"We have to go. I'll need help."
"Where would he take the baby?" Ayaan asked.
Zoya stilled. "I'm not sure." She raked a hand through her hair. "He doesn't have a vehicle."
Ayaan spoke into his radio. "Suspect is on foot. He's got a newborn with him."
Zoya moved to the couch and held up the baby bag. "He'll have to get baby food and bottles and diapers."
"Check local convenience stores," Ayaan continued. "And bus stops."
Zoya stared at the man on the floor. "Is he dead?"
Asad squeezed her shoulder.
Another SWAT member moved in to take over cuffing Imraan, who was stirring. Ayaan pressed his earpiece with his forefinger then glanced at Asad. "The building's clear. A CSU team is on the way." He looked down at Imraan who groaned and coughed. "This guy's going away for a long time."
"Can we leave now?" Zoya demanded.
Asad took her hand. "We can. We'll have to give our statement to the police."
"Fine, let's do it later. I want to find Adil and Arhaan." She darted for the door and Asad followed.

Zoya raced into the darkness, her mind whirling. "What time is it?"
Asad checked his watch. "6:45."
"I know the cops are checking all the places to buy diapers and formula, but I want to look, too."
"Come on."
She wondered if he was just humoring her, but she decided she didn't care as long he didn't try to stop her.
She paused and gazed to the left then the right. "He slipped out a back door, didn't he?"
A gunshot sounded and Zoya cried out at the fiery pain..
