Twenty Six
First it was just days and months that seemed to pass by but now it was years. Zoya had established her fathers name on an international scale, her hospital, had expanded two fold over the years and she had won two prestigious awards, one for the best business woman and another for all the charitable work she did helping patients who couldn't afford treatment. Asad was in his last semester, he had two months left before he graduated as a doctor. The last four years had been very testing for both of them but with the support of their parents they managed to find a happy medium.
Zoya had been home for a few days, she came back to support Asad in his last leg of becoming a doctor. 'You look exhausted, why don't you come to bed' 'I will do, I just need to finish my case notes' Zoya kissed the top of his head 'don't be too long'.
Asad went up to their room to find Zoya fast asleep, as he lay next to her he gently stroked her cheek. Since she had returned he had been so caught up with his studies that he hadn't had a chance to spend any time with her, apart from the odd kiss and cuddle, as much as she craved him she didn't let it show as she needed him to focus. Softly placing his hand over hers Asad closed his eyes and fell asleep.
By the time Zoya woke up Asad had already left, feeling a little sad Zoya washed, changed and went downstairs. 'Good morning beta, how are you?' Dilshad asked smiling at her 'am ok' she said unenthusiastically 'what's wrong?' 'Nothing, I am just being childish' Dilshad sat down next to her 'I doubt that, tell me' 'Asad is working so hard to finish his last few weeks, I know he is caught up and stressed out...I just miss him that's all, I haven't really spent anytime with him' Dilshad placed her hand over hers 'it's natural to feel like that Zoya, it's only a matter of a few weeks then he is all yours' Zoya gave Dilshad a smile that tried to reassure her that she was ok and really was being childish.
'Hey, where are you?' 'I am going to be late Zoya, sorry...I did to realise it was going to take so long' 'it's ok, please don't apologise, I will see you when you get back, I love you' 'I love you too' Zoya looked at the clock, it was coming up to half eight 'Zoya, please eat, he might be a little longer' 'I'm not that hungry...I think I will go up, I need to sort out a few things' Zoya hugged Dilshad and walked up to her room. Not being able to sleep Zoya went and sat out on the balcony, looking up at the star filled sky she slowly started to doze off.
Asad came home just after ten. He walked into his room to find the bed empty 'Zoya' he called out, but there was no response, he was just about to go back outside in search for her when he saw her curled up on the recliner outside. Asad bent down and sat next to her, he closed his eyes feeling guilty, if she missed him he missed her too. 'Zoya' he called out as he tapped her shoulder 'hmm' 'Zoya wake up' Zoya opened her eyes to see him sitting by her, her face broke out into a beautiful smile 'you home' 'yes, come to bed' Zoya held her arms out which Asad took and lifted her up 'have you eaten?' 'I had something earlier, have you?' 'No' Asad looked at her 'why...come on let's...' 'No, I am not hungry...well not for food anyway' Asad smiled at her, pulling her closer her placed his palm on the side of her face 'I'm so sorry Zoya, I have been neglecting you, us. I promise to make it up to you' 'I like the sound of that...I guess I can wait a few more weeks' 'hmmm, or I could start now' Zoya's smile grew wider 'I'm all yours' she said wrapping her arms around him.
When Asad said he was going to make it up to her he wasn't wrong. Zoya felt her whole body break out every inch of her overtaken by wild sensation under his sweet loving touch. Zoya kissed the top of his chest as she lay down in his arm 'thank you' 'for what?' 'For loving me the way you do' Asad couldn't stop smiling 'we'll in that case thank you for loving me back the way you do too' holding him that much closer Zoya closed her eyes and let sleep take over her tired but very much satisfied being.
Zoya waited outside his college, she had never felt so nervous, it was his last exam. After the longest two hours Zoya stood up seeing students exit the main college hall. As soon as she saw Asad come out she ran up to him and enveloped him into her arms 'how did it go?' 'I guess I find out in two weeks time...am just glad it is over'.
With Asad free from the stress he had endured for so long he started to come back to life, going out with Zack and Aleena, meeting other friends and spending quality time with Zoya and his parents.
There was never an ounce of doubt that Asad wouldn't pass, he did with a distinction. Asad had finally come home with the title Dr Asad Ahmed Khan, a dream come true not only for his parents but also for Zoya.
'My graduation ceremony is in the first week of September...and you wifey are not going back until then' 'I am not going anywhere' she said tightening her hold on his hand. That night Zoya went out her way to make the night special for Asad, she had decorated the room with beautiful scented candles and red roses. 'You promise not to look' 'Zoya, I promise...can you tell me what is going on?' 'No...just a few more seconds...ok now open your eyes' Asad opened his eyes to see his bedroom that was illuminated by the small lights Zoya had arranged 'wow, this looks amazing' 'you like it' she asked in an excited voice 'I love it...this is for me' 'yes for you...but also for me too' 'seeing you went to all this trouble for us, let's not let the lights fade out' Asad said as moved closer to her. Totally giving herself into him Zoya let Asad make love to her until every candle faded out.
September
Zoya was having a conference call with some of her managers when Asad came in 'one minute' she mouthed as she continued talking 'no that's absolutely fine, once you have the paperwork ready email it to me for proof reading...oh and before you go has Shreya booked Ammi's ticket?' 'Yes she has' 'brilliant, I will speak to you soon'.
Zoya looked back at Asad as she disconnected the call 'sorry that took longer than expected' 'no worries, I was going to go out to get my suit for the graduation ceremony, you coming?' 'Yes, give me a few minutes to change'.
Walking around the shops Zoya started feeling tired 'can we stop for a coffee break?' 'Yeah sure' as they walked towards the coffee shop Zoya paused 'ugh...what is that smell?' Asad looked at her with an odd expression 'what smell' Zoya inhaled again and pulled a sickly face 'I don't know what ever it is it's making me want to throw up' Asad grabbed her hand and started pulling her behind him 'you spend way too much time with Aleena' he said rolling his eyes.
'Mum where is Zoya, I haven't seen her all morning' 'she popped out saying that she needed to get a few things before her Ammi came...did you need something?' Dilshad asked 'no...nothing'
After a few hours Zoya walked in with Aleena 'so that's where you were' Asad said coming down the stairs 'what have you two been up to?' Zoya and Aleena tried extremely hard to keep a straight face 'come on spill it out...with faces like that I know you are up to something' 'Asad you should know us by now, what can we get up to other than shopping...and plus we needed to buy you a graduation present' Asad looked at Zoya 'Zoya I told you no presents needed, I will have you all at her ceremony and mum has organised a get together afterwards' 'its only something small...' She said before she scurried past him with Aleena close behind.
Yasmin managed to make it in time for the ceremony. The whole family stood up cheering as Asad went up on stage to collect his doctorate, the sense of pride and gratitude they felt was second to none.
At home Dilshad had organised a grand party to celebrate her sons success. As guests gathered around Asad was showered with a lot of love and a lot of gifts. Asad thanked everyone everyone for coming and joining in with his happy occasion, as the party went on Rashid and Dilshad continued to entertain their guests.
'Zoya where have you been...are you avoiding me?' Zoya started to giggle 'not at all, I was just talking to Aunty Amina, you enjoying the party?' 'Hardly, my wife keeps disappearing...by the way where is my present?' 'No patience I tell you...all in good time' 'you are not playing fair Mrs Khan' Zoya leaned up to kiss him on the cheek 'all is fair in love an war Mr Khan, I will see you later'.
At the night grew one by one the guests started to go leaving jus Asad and his family as well as Aleena and Zack.
'I think we all deserve a coffee' Dilshad said 'mum, one second' Zoya called out 'I wanted to give Asad my graduation present to him' 'finally' Asad said pretending to be annoyed.
Zoya got up and walked towards the fire place, she picked up her present and walked back to stand in front of him. Zoya gave Asad a smile before she held it out in front if him 'a card?' Asad said looking down at the envelope 'yes, it's all I could get' Asad took the envelope from her taking the card out he opened it and when he did his eyed opened wide, he looked up at her with his mouth wide open and then back at the card 'is this...are you...I don't believe it' Asad picked Zoya up into his arms and started spinning around making her scream out in happiness. As Asad put her down he held her face and crashed his lips over hers. Dilshad, Rashid, Yasmin, Zack and Aleena didn't know where to look 'Ya Allah...what are they doing, what on earth did she give him for him to lose all shame' Dilshad whispered out to Rashid and Yasmin who had fully turned around.
'As much as it is fascinating watching you kiss the life out of your wife and that too in front of your parents...what the hell did you just get' Zack asked.
Asad stepped back 'sorry...I...I got carried away' 'yes, we saw...so you going to tell us?' Asad opened up the card and turned it around, as soon as he did everyone's reactions mirrored his. Asad held up a picture of an ultra sound, Zoya was pregnant.
After the chaos that had erupted in the room Dilshad managed to calm everyone down 'Zoya how far are you...I mean how many weeks?' 'I will be eleven weeks tomorrow' Asad looked back at Aleena 'you knew...that's were you two went that morning, to have the scan' Aleena smiled 'yes...congratulations Asad' she said giving him a big hug.
'Thank you so so much Zoya, this is the best present ever'.
Yasmin took Zoya into her hold 'you can cancel that trip back to India, I will handle everything, Rashid Bhai can come and look after some of it on your behalf' 'absolutely' Rashid agreed in an instant 'you are on 24 hour watch, you are not moving, or doing anything until you have finished your term' Zoya didn't care that she's a being confined to the house she was just happy that Allah had once again blessed her.
That night Asad could hardly bring himself to sleep, he held on to Zoya as she lay down, with his hand sitting on her stomach he started talking like there was no tomorrow. 'I still can't believe it...I am going to be a dad' he said kissing the back of her head.
Over the next few days Zoya's morning sickness got worse, Dilshad had prescribed her some anti sickness tablets to help her. 'Mum, do I have to...even looking at it is making me sick' 'yes you do...now open wide' Dilshad said as she force fed her.
'Ma'am, I have Aleena on the phone' Suzy said as she passed the phone to Dilshad 'You talk first, she will only ask for you anyway' Zoya took the phone from Dilshad happy that her force feeding session had come to a halt 'hello...' Zoya pulled the phone away from her ear scrunching up her face at the noise she just heard 'Aleena, will you please talk in a language I can understand, what's wrong with you' Zoya heard what Aleena had just said 'Ya Allah...' Dilshad came running back into the room hearing Zoya scream, when she saw her jumping up and down she nearly had a heart attack 'Zoya, what on earth are you doing...will you stop that' she said in a stern voice. Zoya stopped immediately 'sorry mum...Aleena I am coming over' Zoya cut the call and look towards Dilshad who was still standing there unimpressed 'you going to tell me what warranted that craziness' 'yes...mum Aleena is pregnant, she just came back from the doctor and according to her cycle she is around ten weeks' 'subhan'Allah...Zoya that is fantastic news' 'please mum, I need to go and see her' 'ok, ok...I will come with you'
Zoya and Aleena sat there going absolutely crazy with excitement 'you know what Amina Allah has blessed both our children, I think we should hold prayers to thank him' 'I think that's a lovely idea, how about this Friday after Jumah, we can have it here'.
After Jumah everyone sat round reading special Dua's for Zoya and Aleena, they thanked Allah for his mercy and blessing and asked Him to continue to protect them until they gave birth to the little lives they were carrying.
As the months passed Zoya and Aleena flourished, they were spoilt by everyone including their husbands. Aleena's bump seemed to be a lot bigger than Zoya's making it more difficult for her to manoeuvre 'I tell you this baby is going on a diet...look how big it is' she complained 'Aleena, my sweetheart it's not the baby that will be going on a diet, it's you...all that junk food you have been consuming' Aleena pulled her tongue out at Zoya 'about to become an Ammi and still a drama queen' she whispered under her breath 'I heard that'.
May
Asad came back from the hospital to find Zoya lying back on the sofa 'hey' he said as he sat down beside her 'hi' 'how are you feeling?' 'Extremely fat' Asad smiled at her, he placed his hand over her baby bump 'how is my little champ?' Asad had made a habit of talking to his baby and every time the baby moved or kicked it would overjoyed him. Zoya couldn't possibly love the guy that sat there before her anymore than she did, he was the best friend, the best boyfriend, the best husband and now the best dad in the world.
'You keep referring to the baby as champ, what if it's a girl' 'it doesn't matter will still be my little champ...not long to go now...soon mummy and daddy will be holding you' Zoya took in a deep breath, Asad looked up at her and placed his hand over hers 'it will be ok Zoya, I will be with you the whole time' 'I know, am still nervous though' 'it's natural to be...come on let's take you two to bed'.
At three in the morning Dilshad woke up hearing Asad screaming her name out, Dilshad jumped out of bed and ran towards his room 'what happened?' She asked panicked 'nothing Ammi, you think Dr Khan would be the calm one, I have broken my waters' Dilshad looked at Asad 'if I didn't love you I would have killed you...pagal...what kind of a doctor are you?' 'Mum can we go through my credentials later we need to get her to the hospital' whilst Asad went to get the car Dilshad asked Zoya a number of questions.
Like a crazed man Asad managed to get Zoya to the hospital, sitting in the waiting area Zoya turned towards Dilshad 'Mum...can you...I mean will you deliver the baby?' Dilshad's eyes moistened as she held her breath 'really...it would mean the world to me Zoya...thank you for letting me do this beta'.
As Dilshad got ready the staff in the maternity ward took Zoya into her birth room. 'Asad wait outside, I need to check her' 'no way, I am it going anywhere...I am staying until I hear that cry' Dilshad looked at Zoya, this was embarrassing 'Asad can you at least turn around...stand on that side of the curtain rather than this side' 'why, I have delivered babies before you know...doctor remember' 'enough of your smartness...now move' Dilshad said looking at him with narrowed eyes 'ok...fine I'm going'.
As Asad waited for Dilshad to check Zoya her heard a voice 'did you hear that?' 'Hear what?' 'It sounded like Z...' Asad heard if again and this time so did Dilshad and Zoya 'is that Zack...what is he doing here?'
Asad and Dilshad walked outside to see Amina, Zack and his mum with Aleena. 'Ya Allah...Aleena has gone into labour too?' Dilshad said looking utterly shocked 'I tell you these girls had this planned well, Aleena wasn't due for another two weeks'.
Zack who had a weaker heart opted to sit out side and wait whilst his and Aleena's mum went inside as her birthing partners. On the other side Asad held Zoya's hand firmly in his as she was ready to give birth.
After what felt like a life time Amina came outside with tears in her eyes 'Mubarak Zack, Allah has blessed you with a little girl' Zack hugged Amina as he cried with happiness 'is...is she ok...can I see her' 'they are just cleaning her, you can come in shortly' Zack looked up and raised his hands to thank Allah for this little miracle.
As Zoya came to the end of her labour Dilshad held the crying baby in her hands 'it's a boy...Asad it's a boy' Asad laughed as he cried, Zoya was too tired to even respond, she looked at Asad who lowered his head and kissed her 'thank you so much Zoya, thank you' 'I love you' 'I love you more' 'is he ok?' Asad asked looking back up, Dilshad and the nurse had cleaned the baby and wrapped him up. The happiness Dilshad felt holding her grandson reduced her to tears, Asad hugged her 'Ya Allah...I can't believe he is mine, ours. Mum can I hold him?' Asad took his little boy into his arms, he kissed his tiny little cheek as he cradled him 'hey buddy...I'm you dad...and this here is your mummy' Asad went and placed the baby into Zoya a lap 'he is beautiful, he looks just like you Asad' 'what do you want to name him?' He asked 'you chose' 'you did all the hard work, I think it's right you get to name him...right mum' 'absolutely...I named Asad, you name your son' 'I like the name Aariz, Aariz Ahmed Khan' Dilshad and Asad smiled 'perfect'
Asad came out to see Zack, as soon a a Zack saw him he hugged him 'we had a little girl' he said shedding tears 'we had a little boy, Aariz' 'congratulations...I can't believe it man...this is just awesome' 'how is Aleena, and the baby, have you named her?' 'Both are ok, I came out to call her dad, yes we named her Maham' 'beautiful name Zack...when are they shifting her to her room?' 'in a few moments, we are on the third floor' 'I have no idea where we are, I will ask mum and get back to you...let me know as soon as you transfer'
Asad went back to be with his family 'Aleena had a little girl, Maham' Zoya cried fresh tears 'Mash'Allah...are they ok?' 'Yes, they are being taken up to their room soon' 'Asad you sit with Zoya, I am going to see them'.
After all the initial checks Zoya was soon transferred to her room which was four doors away from Aleena. Not being able to hold back longer Zoya took Aariz and asked Asad to take her to see Aleena and Maham, sitting her in a wheel chair Asad took her to Aleena's room.
As soon as she entered her room Aleena let out a happy cry. Zoya and Aleena hugged like never before, they took each other's child in to their arms and held them close to their hearts. Asad, Zack and all the mums that were there could not believe their eyes. They truly were so lucky to have a beautiful family, amazing children and now perfect grandchildren.
It wasn't long before the new borns were taken and welcomed to their respective homes. It was a start of a new chapter in the lives of four best friends, who had laughed and cried together, who had stood by one another no matter what. Whose love for one another went above and beyond anything. For them it was always going to be A Love Unconditional.
