Crying On a Suitcase
He couldn't resist slightly opening his bedroom door. Watching her walk away from him hurt his heart. He felt a pinch in his "kaambakkht dil" each time she took a step closer to the door and away from him.
Crying as she walked to door, she couldn't help but think back to all the wonderful moments in this house. She had found a mother in her Dilshad Phupi and a best friend/sister in Najma. She wouldn't call Mr. Khan a friend, he was... much more. He had become her source or security. Being in his arms gave her a sense of insure, it made her feel...safe. She sought comfort in his arms numerous of times. When he stopped her forced marriage with Akram, practically all of Mangalpur, and when she had found out her father had passed on to name a few. She had begun to think it wasn't all a drama; maybe her Mr. Khan really did feel something for her.
But alas, reality struck. She was a misfit to him. Though it hurts, a lot, there was no choice but to get into the car and leave.
He sat on his settee deep in thought. Unable to keep still anymore, he got up and began pacing. Why did he say those things earlier? He never could control what he said in anger but did he really want her to leave? No. Why not? She has a life back in New York, its better that she leaves. Right? Then why in the world did it hurt so much?
She knew he was hurting. She was his mother after all. However, it was time to knock some sense into her emotionally challenged, thick headed son. In everything Zoya had done, she had thought about Asad. She had done what no other girl would have had the guts to do. She did it all for Asad. Dilshad could see the love blooming between the two but let them be because she knew they would eventually find their way together. But how could they realize and express their love for each other if Zoya went back to New York? The only way she could get through to her son is if she made him realize how wrong he was and that was exactly what she did.
"I don't think we'll even be able to see Zoya again. She's gone because of you. Won't you stop her?" There that should do it Dilshad thought.
Now that he thought about it, Asad realized Ammi was right. In fact many of the seemly crazy things Zoya did were essentially for him. With that thought, he quickly got up, grabbed his keys and ran to his car.
He was determined to bring back his Zoya. Yes. His Zoya, it sounded so right. He finally admitted it: his musibat has come to mean much more to him than a house guest. He loved her. And that was why he needed to get to her before it was too late.
Waiting at her gate, she cried as she thought back to the beautiful moments she had spent with her Mr. Khan. When he had tricked her on Holi, the bhaang night, and their late night coffee sessions in the garden; the list was endless. The good memories easily overpowered the bad ones. She was never a person to dwell on the negative and though it would make leaving seem like a better choice, she couldn't help it. Remembering those positive moments warmed her heart.
After breaking every traffic law, Asad finally got to the airport. There were so many people, how was he going to find her among the crowd? And that was when he heard the announcement for the flight to New York at gate H. wasting no time at all, he ran for his life to bring it back to him.
Zoya stood there crying waiting to board her flight. Mr. Dhurandhar felt bad watching her cry like that but he had been tricked, multiple times, by this one girl so he watched her like a hawk scared she might run. His thoughts were interrupted when he heard a familiar voice calling out for Zoya. Just as he thought, Zoya ran.
Hearing Asad shout her name froze her. Was it really him? Was she imagining this, was it all in her head? To find out if she had completely lost her mind, Zoya turned around slowly hoping he was really there. And there he stood waiting with his arms wide open. Without giving it a second thought she ran as fast as she could into his arms. They stood there embracing each other for what felt like hours. Finally, Asad broke away, wiped her tears and shook his head telling her to stop crying. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a very angry Mr. Dhurandhar approaching them and before Mr. Dhurandhar could take his Zoya away from him, Asad cupped her cheek with one hand and tightly held onto her waist with the other.
"I don't deserve someone as wonderful as you. You are so selfless and I continued to blame you. I fell in love with you when I first saw you crying at the dargah. Then I fell more and more in love with you every day after that but I fought my feelings for you because I saw you as a misfit when in reality, you are absolutely perfect and I'm the misfit. I fought with you and used anger to cover up my love for you. I am so sorry for every cruel word and act. Please forgive me for not seeing the real you and focusing on outward appearance." Asad said in barely a whisper.
Wiping his tears Zoya replied with a soft smile on her lips "I've already forgiven you; you know I don't hold grudges against anyone."
"It's time to go now Ms. Farooqui." Mr. Dhurandhar interrupted.
Asad looked at Mr. Dhurandhar then back at Zoya and got lost in her eyes. Without wasting any more precious time, Asad got down on one knee.
"Zoya Farooqui, you brought light into my dark world. You repeatedly brought a smile to my face and made me realize that I do in fact have a heart. I love Zoya. Will you make me the luckiest person in the world and marry me?"
With tears streaming down her face, Zoya nodded yes unable to find her voice. That was the sweetest confession ever, and from Mr. Emotionally Challenged, that was amazing.
Asad pulled the ring out of his pocket and slipped it onto her finger, where it rightfully belonged. Standing up again, Asad looked into her eyes and whispered another "I love you Zoya" before being hugged by and overjoyed Zoya. What he heard next left him speechless. "I love you too Asad." Zoya said back.
Asad and Zoya were so lost in their own little world, they didn't realize the crowd that had gathered was now clapping and hooting.
Breaking out of their hug, Asad held Zoya's hand as he turned to Mr. Dhurandhar.
"I hope you two stay happy and together" Mr. Dhurandhar said sincerely to them.
Together, Asad and Zoya walked out of the airport, hand-in-hand, basking in their new found love.
