Episode 17
Zoya shut her eyes not expecting what to do. But the impact she expected never came. She slowly opened her eyes to confusion.
It took all his will power not to kiss her. Instead, he gently nudged her nose with his and then pulled back with a faint smile.
"Don't worry! Good night! All will be well!"
Asad turned to go slightly amused by his own actions but stopped on his tracks to have some fun with his newly wedded wife.
Zoya touched her nose still not knowing how to react. This definitely was a sign that he was not going to leave her. Was she stuck with him forever? Before she could think further she heard him say, "Zoe, please give me back my shirt."
"Why?" she asked as she nervously ran her hands over her shirt, well actually, his shirt.
"Because I don't want ammi to come investigating."
"Ok! Go to your room, I will bring it."
"No! Its quite risky! If ammi sees you in my room, it will be a problem." He said, hiding his smirk as he went and sat comfortably in the bed.
"Wh...What?" still not believing the nerve of the man in front of her.
"Zoya please. It's getting late. Mujhe ninda arahi hai." This time she noticed his smirk.
Tilting her head slightly to the right, she said, "Really? Tek hai."
"Wh...What?"
"I said, Tek hai'" as she unbuttoned the collar.
Asad gulped a gallon of air as he realized she was actually unbuttoning the first button.
"Wait!"
Still hands on the second button, she asked, "Why Asad? Don't want your shirt?" in a voice dangerously sexy.
If only she knew what she did to him.
He had to leave before things got out of hand, "I...I think, you can give me the shirt later. Bye!"
Without another word or gesture, he left the room, the way he came in.
She laughed till her stomach hurt. The look on his face had been epic.
"Phew! What would have happened if he hadn't freaked out and left?"
She didn't want to think about it though she knew she wouldn't have gone after the second button. She would have just kicked him out of the room.
A faint smile played on her lips as she felt something special. There was something in this man. She had never felt this happy before. Was she falling for him? She shrugged away the thought as sleep overtook her.
*****
He placed his hand over his chest telling himself to cool down. What the hell was that?
He had expected to play with her. He had expected her to kick him out but this. Phew!
What would have happened if he had stayed in there? Surely she wouldn't have gone through with it. But seeing the extent to which she went to tease him, he felt a faint hope growing. He would soon have his Zoya back. Not wanting to think more, he went into a sleep filled with memorable dreams.
*****
Next morning,
He recalled the past day's events yet again as he got ready to face his mother. Still not sure what to tell him mom, he exited the room. To his surprise Zoya and his ammi were in the dining room chatting like old buddies.
"Ammi."
"Asad, what time is it?"
"8. Ammi, I need to tell you something."
"Even I need to tell you something. The bride's parents' just called me and told that we have to postpone the wedding by at least 4 weeks because the bride has to complete some course or something. What did you have to say?"
Finally feeling better Asad managed, "Woh...actually...I wanted to change the sherwani. I didn't like the colour."
Asad caught Zoya smirking at Asad's pathetic lie as he joined them at the table.
Oblivious to the exchange that was happening across the hall, Dilshad started eating her breakfast.
"Asad, Zoe wants to do some shopping. I think I will take her out and we will have lunch out. I really like your friend here."
Zoya beamed in pride.
"What will I do here alone? I will also come with you." As soon as he said it, he realized it was a mistake.
"Since when do you like shopping? You have never come with me to the mall."
Zoya looked at Asad amused, who was trying to come up with a perfect excuse.
"Now that I am..." taking a sip of his coffee "married."
"Huh?"
"Now that I am getting married I should start with this, right?"
"Interesting. Chalo, then what are we waiting for, let's go!"
*****
The original plan was to come back after lunch, but they ended up watching a movie and coming home only after dinner.
"Zoe, I had the best time ever. You are a marvelous girl. Whoever is going to marry you is one lucky chap" glancing at Asad, "Hai na beta?"
"Han ammi. He is the luckiest man on earth."
Dilshad smiled turning away, once again missing the eye lock that had a conversation of its own.
"Good night, Asad!"
"Good night!"
*****
Asad woke up as the thunder struck again. He crept out of the bed and gazed out of the window at the down pouring rain. The monsoon really did bring flavors to his life. That day at the lake-house had been the most special of them all. He wished he could go back to that day. He sighed as he knew he had to wait for a while. But the real question was what if she didn't get her memory back at all?
*****
"Do agree to me, aunty."
"Agree to what?" asked Asad as he entered his mom's room.
"I was telling aunt that we should start decorating the house for your wedding," said Zoya smiling, earning a death stare from Asad.
Finishing folding the clothes, Dilshad said, "Zoe is right. We will discuss about it in the evening. I am going down to cook."
Asad stopped Zoya from following Dilshad.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm going to help aunty."
"No. What are you doing with the wedding preparation?"
Holding her laughter, she said, "I should be the one to prepare for your wedding. Oh Asad! I love the rain," she said before running out to the balcony.
Asad followed her outside, "It's not funny."
"Ha. Ha. It kind of is," and without warning she sprinkled rain drops on his face.
"Zoya!" he exclaimed holding her hands with one hand and sprinkled rain drops on her face. She giggled and struggled to free herself, "Asad! Leave me!" He slowly placed her hands on his chest letting her feel his heartbeat.
She struggled yet again, this time Asad let her go. But nature thought otherwise, a thunder struck and Zoya hugged her husband tight. Feeling a dj-vu, Asad held her face to make her look at him. Both of them looked at each other searching for something. He had no idea what got over him, when he leaned in to place a chaste kiss on her lower lip. A soft, subtle kiss.
Coming to his senses, he pushed away. He managed to mutter a Sorry' before leaving the room.
Still in shock, she slumped down on the floor, weak from what had happened.
*****
"Can't you avoid it Asad?" Asad's mom was asking him something when Zoya entered the hall.
"No, ammi. I promise I will be back in a week."
"But, Asad..."
"Please, ammi. I have to go."
"Ok. But leave Zoe here. I need company."
"Yes ammi, I'm going alone."
"Ok then."
"Bye ammi," turning to Zoya, "Bye Zoya." He took his bag and left without another word.
Zoya looked at him puzzled, that in no way was a proper goodbye'.
Wait! Why the goodbye?
"Aunty, where is he going?"
"Some police work. He said he will be back in a week."
*****
He had no work. He had to be away from Zoya to be sane. Every time he was with her, he lost his sanity. God! That girl killed him! With him away, she would at least be able to forget the kiss and be able to gather her thoughts. The only thing he didn't know was that from the minute he left the house, she couldn't stop thinking of him or the kiss.
(To be continued)
