Chap-6

"Aahil--Aahil--! " the low and timid voice and the fact that someone was calling his name disturbed the peaceful escapade he was in and broke his slumber.

With slight annoyance Aahil woke up. He grabbed a shirt and put it on expecting to see Tanveer at the door.

Sleep didn't leave his eyes. He was still in daze. And since he haven't paid much attention he couldn't detect the slight variation in that tone. So he wasn't sure who it was but sure enough to tell that it was either Tanveer or Nida.

But to his astonishment when Aahil opened the door he saw--

Sanam-- !

In haste he had put on the shirt, so when the door opened the buttons of his shirt were unhooked and the petite frame beneath was visible.

"It's late. Begum Sahiba told me to wake you up. " she said in a slight hesitative tone and lowered her eyes almost immediately.
Aahil noticed the tray in her hands that Sanam was holding in an apologising manner.

"I - i'm -sorry! I wouldn't have-- " she began, her face regretful.

Everybody knew at this hour of morning nobody except tanveer had the authority to disturb him. And she had chosen this moment in spite of knowing it.

"It's alright. "

Sanam stared at him with an inexplicable expression.

"What?" he asked.
Sanam slowly shook her head, " nothing. . . " she kept the tray on the centre table. Sanam was about to leave when Aahil said "who sent this coffee ?"

Sanam looked a little timid. She replied with an alarming face. "I - I mean I brought it. Last night you didn't have a decent sleep -- so I thought--"

"Wait-- how did you --who told you ? "
has his ammi seen him awake then?Aahil wondered.

"no one. I saw the lights on --so I --"
I have to go now. " putting the tray down Sanam strode out of the room and out of his sight.

For a moment Aahil stared from where she had just left. Then he took a look at the coffee on the tray.
Sanam ? She saw the lights on! But what was she doing up so late? And she does remember that he needs coffee whenever he had a bad sleep! But that was not so important right now. What was important was that she kept an eye on his window!

Why ?

The question tormented him like there was nothing else he wanted to know more than he did this!

***************

In the kitchen busy with the Italian soup, Sanam wonders why Aahil didn't shout at her.

"Aahil and his moodswings! I shall never understand him completely!" she complained inwardly to her mind throwing several silent curses at him. But even then Sanam couldn't refrain herself from worrying. "something is wrong. Aahil doesn't look like himself!

There is definitely some reason.

But what ?"

Sanam plunged in deep thought. The ceaseless mind wandering lasted the several last minutes of her cooking hour.
At the end she noticed her mind was disturbed which was quite unusual, especially when the person concerning who it was, the whole thing seemed idiotic.

*************

When finally Aahil was ready in his beige suit and stepped out of his room, time was up.

It was 9 o'clock and he was late for the talk he was supposed to have with his ammi.

It has always been like that.

Orders.

Begum Sahiba's orders.
At times like this Aahil felt less like a son who was summoned by his mother, and more like a service-an order he had to obey out of ritual. Like he was bound to obey to that order no matter what. Whether he likes it or not counts little.

And has he ever really disliked ?

What was wrong with his thoughts ? He was supposed to feel glad that he had been bestowed with a mother like Tanveer. What else could he want more.

Aahil was immersed in his own set of thoughts when he took a left turn in the corridor of the grand Nawab villa and came face to face with someone who was walking from just his opposite direction.

Aahil stopped in time before his legs could lose balance and collide with the woman in front.

Aahil's reflex was good and he survived the fall but the woman was not so quick to bar the encounter.
Aahil placed a hand instinctively around her and steadied her. She was disbarred from falling but Aahil's grip was harder. Still he could have let go immediately after he'd seen she was ok but he couldn't. The face took away all his reasoning as well as his thinking capabilities.

Sanam--!"

Aahil muttered the name in half daze and half unsurity.

"I am sorry! Begum Sahiba asked me to find the. . . ." she was speaking but Aahil couldn't hear a thing of what she said. He lost the trail of words and blankly stared at her.

"What do you think about Nida ? This marriage. . . " Aahil mouthed the words with a strange steelyness in his voice. He was aware of what he was saying. And suddenly he didn't care.

For a second Sanam thought she was hallucinating, maybe the work was too much and she was loosing her mind. But No, the moment she blinked her eyes and saw him still there, standing, and his eyes boring with an intense gleam, she froze.

The rigid look on his face said Aahil was waiting for an answer. And Sanam knew, it was for real.

It was not a dream.

She could have just proposed her astonishment but maybe Sanam forgot to do even that. She barely remembered where she was going or for what. Instead she tried her best to form a reply that won't look too dumb.

The arm where Aahil still held her, was tighter. And with every passing second the press of his fingers became more fierce. More harsh.
Sanam felt a pain searing from her arms to her neck, She grimaced, but she didn't consider it important enough to mention. The urgency of the question and Aahil's grave approach was greater than her astonishment and the awkwardness of the question.

"She is good- -good-looking. . . "

"and Is that enough Sanam-- to be my wife . . . ? "

Completely aghast, and taken over with sudden nervousness, Sanam muttered faltering -- "She--she is r-rich. E-ducated. "

She didn't even know why she bothered to answer but that really didn't seem to matter now.

On the other hand, the grip grew strong and the pain excruciating. Sanam found the black orbs staring at her. The stare so intense that she found herself getting lost in those intangible darkness where she couldn't see the end anymore.

"And is that enough?" Aahil asked again with a tone that was demanding but gentle at the same time, which was unlike the Aahil she knew.

His voice was barely above normal but there was something in his husky tone that gave an Icy chill. She suddenly felt her throat dry --like an Oasis.

Sanam knew little what she would have done if that very moment the distraction have had not arrived.

They both gave a startling jump and distanced at once. Aahil let her go. His hands went straight to his pant pockets.
The sound of heels steered near and without as much a glance Sanam left the spot at once.

Nida grinned flashing her perfectly shaped teeths.

"hey ! Look who's here !
Good morning handsome ! Missing me?" Nida cocked her head on one side and gave a naughty smirk. She didn't wait for the answer and grabbed his hand as if she knew it wouldn't come.

"So we are going to get married. . . . And today we have our engagement! The most special for anyone. " she smiled and moved closer bringing her hands and resting them around his neck."then why do you look so grumpy Mr.Ibrahim ? May I know the reason?" she gave an impish look but Aahil made no sound neither did he make any attempt to move away. He just stared. His eyes looking over Nida's shoulder at some place far away. Nida didn't miss that. She didn't make any move to point it either, instead Nida loosened her hand.

She slipped her fingers inside his palm. "Come let's go. Let's have some chat! We had talked so little since I came! " Aahil nodded.
"Good. Let's enjoy the last few hours as being friends!" she winked and pulled him with her.

****************

Aahil leaned on the terrace wall and watched the plants intently like it was the most important and urgent thing to do. Nida observes him for a while before changing her position and leaning next to him.

"do you think I'm your good friend Aahil ? " he turned at her and threw a quizzical look "of course I do! You're not just a good friend. . . you're my best friend. . . ."

"then why don't you tell me why you're disturbed ? We have always shared most of the things. . .haven't we?" Nida gave a small smile and looking at her Aahil slowly nodded. "Nothing Nida-it's nothing to be worried about." Nida agreed-"right. If you say so!" there was a silence that Aahil felt was unnecessary. He cleared his throat, "I think we should go. Ammi must be waiting. She wanted to meet me."

"oh sure! -" Nida dropped the flower she was stroking her hands at and accompanied him through the stairs.

"Aahil I have always known you to be a clear minded person and I've always believed you're one of those rare people who know when and what they want. You're a man with a strong will--and I hope in all these years it has not changed."

Aahil turned his eyes on her. They were just near the last corner of the corridor and close to tanveer's room when Nida suddenly threw the words, her way of speaking was so casual and easy that at first Aahil thought she was trying to annoy him by teasing, but when he saw her even expression he was convinced Nida wasn't playing.

But Aahil choose not to answer and tore his eyes away at other direction. He thought this would stop Nida from talking on something he wasn't interested at. He had no plans of discussing their post marriage career plans, when the thought of the marriage alone unnerved him.

" and I am sure you know what you want. " she smiled softly, her big eyes seeing almost through him. " because the Aahil I know doesn't make decisions just for the heck of it. He doesn't compromise on anything ! Right ? " Aahil stared not quite aware what to say. Nida was cocking her head on one side and waiting perhaps for an indication from him that she was right, or maybe something else, Aahil didn't know what. Neither he had any intention of knowing. He just wanted to get over and done with the engagement. Probably a non-believer like him wouldn't believe, but maybe Allah heard his plea, as at that precise moment Latif approached and they had to follow him.

************

Tanveer was speaking to a young man. As Aahil stepped into the dining hall she sensed him at once.

Tanveer smiled "Aahil beta-ah here you are! Come here! Look. . I've called the wedding planners. I want this wedding to be the most spectacular one that Bhopal had ever seen! " Aahil stared unblinkingly, he was not aware of any of this arrangements. He wanted to get it over with. The last thing he wanted was to make it a huge affair. The wedding day was yet to arrive and he was already getting annoyed. He was just obeying to all of this silently because of his Ammi.

Tanveer asked him to express his desire or if he had any suggestions but Aahil left it upon her and excused himself politely. Tanveer was happy. she didn't suspect anything and was rather glad that Aahil relied on her.

A few hours later in his own room Aahil was preparing to leave for office when Latif came hurling at his door. Aahil pressed the remote. The door opened. "what is it Latif?"for some reason Aahil was annoyed.

"Begum Saheba has called you."
what is it now Latif?" Aahil shook his head grudgingly. "ok. Fine. I am coming."
Latif left the room.Aahil smoothered his shirt and leaned to collect his files when he felt someone's presence and turned at his left.
Sanam was keeping his ironed clothes in the wardrobe. Aahil tried not to look but he couldn't pull his eyes away. there was something always present in between them that no matter how much he tried, he could never really ignore it.

However Aahil was not a man to let his emotions dominate him over, so he shifted his eyes. He was going to just leave the room when he heard the gasp. He didn't wait for any further indication , dropping the file Aahil went straight to her side. "what happened??"
but he didn't had to wait for the answer. Blood was oozing out from her cut.
The jari in his wedding kurta had made a deep searing cut on Sanam's finger.

Was it a coincidence or was it the destiny ?
The niqah that had to do nothing with Sanam yet so much with her--

perhaps so much--so that it became a reason of her pain!

Transfixed Sanam stared at the wound but there was no pain on her face. Aahil couldn't see a single stain in her eyes. She was perfectly calm. Rather there settled a crease of embarrassment over her face-a clear line of nervousness along.

Sanam seem ashamed.
Her blood had covered the fine fabric and its beauty was now distort. And she had been the reason of it !
She had spoiled his wedding suit!

Couldn't one thing she could have done rightly? Instead she had served him a reason to bring further insult upon herself!
Would Aahil spare the chance now?

Annoyance and shame clouded her beautiful face.

But Aahil wasn't looking at her. His eyes were on her wound.
He pulled an astounding Sanam to the bed almost abruptly, without any preamble. . . .!

Poor Sanam unable to understand why Aahil monopolises so much of her thoughts.
Aahil is slowly starting to question his blind devotion to Tunveer.
Nida was practically begging Aahil to break the engagement and think for himself...thats how I interpreted that paragraph.

The scene between Sahil in the corridor was intense...Ahil was after some sort of acknowledgement that Sanam also has feelings for him, Sanam is aware that Ahil is engaged and doesn't even know that Aahil feels anything other than hate towards her.

cannot wait for the next part.

Lovely chapter Divs 😊.
I love the moment when they bumped into each other in the corridor. He wanted to see a sign of her that she is not ok with his marriage to Nida. Unfortunately, as clueless as Sanam is, he didn't get his answer 😆
Aahil is so frustrated right now. He was literally begging Sanam to deny that Nida was not right for him. I like his indirect approach to Sanam, but she is .
Precap, hmm! seems interesting. Aahil and Sanam outdoors!! Should be fun I guess. Can't wait for the next chapter. Pls, don't let us wait too long for it 😃
Thx for the pm 😉
