He watched as she danced, captivating the crowd around her. Her violet lengha tirelessly and gracefully danced to her tunes. Her effortless and beautiful self almost possessed him as she smiled in his direction.
Her eyes twinkled in the golden lights above them, highlighting the kohl lined within them.
Aahil Raza Ibrahim was in love.
And it hurt.
It hurt to see his love, Sanam, be with his kid brother. He did not like the fact that her and Rehan were very close, and in his opinion;
Too Close.
The music suddenly stopped and so did Sanam. She laughed and slightly bowed as the guests clapped and cheered for her performance.
Sanam Ahmed Khan was beautiful.
Eternally beautiful.
Suddenly, Aahil felt a soft hand on his arm. He opened his eyes and looked blankly at the wall in front of him.
"Aahil... kya hua baby?" asked Nida.
Aahil realized where he was... and he looked to Nida who seemed to have a confused expression across her face.
"K..Kuch nahin... what are you doing here?" asked Aahil as he straightened his posture and looked directly at his wife, Nida.
" I was missing you baby... so main aagayi!" chirped Nida. Aahil rolled his eyes... of course he had to tolerate her presence. They were married afterall and there was absolutely nothing he could do about it.
" Honestly Nida, I'm really busy... please leave." said Aahil as he gathered some files on his desk and opened each one of them. Nida frowned, " What's wrong with you?"
Aahil clenched his teeth. She was more irritating after marriage than she was when they were friends.
"Please LEAVE...L-E-A-V-E" snapped Aahil. Nida pursed her lips and threw him a nasty glare, " So you're thinking about her again, aren't you?"
"What? Are you mad?" asked Aahil with a frown. "You're mad... MAD ABOUT HER!" yelled Nida.
Aahil snapped up from his seat and grabbed her arm, " Don't you dare yell in my office Nida... yeh tumhara ghar nahin hain..." Nida squirmed out of his hold and continued to look straight into his eyes with full intent to finally hear his confession.
"Fine... I'll leave... but don't you dare think that I'll let her come back into our life again Aahil!" roared Nida. She turned on her heels and thundered out of the room, slamming the door behind her.
Aahil massaged his temples and wondered, " What shitty mistake..."
He decided that he would leave because he needed some time to relax and unwind. He called his secretary and asked her to book a ticket to New York... He needed some time alone away from Nida and her senseless presence.
He went home that evening and went straight to his pool, where his alcohol was waiting for him.
Aahil waded into the water and took a deep breath, where he then closed his eyes. His eyes trecherously betrayed him again. He only thought of one woman...
Sanam Ahmed Khan.
It had been five years since Sanam left after his Nikah to Nida. He remembered that evening where she left him a letter on his bed indicating that she was leaving and placed the keys right beside the piece of paper.
That letter pained him. Why was she leaving? What was the matter? Did Rehaan scare her off? Did they run off? What the hell was going on?
A tear dropped from his eyes and splattered itself on the ink where Sanam had wrote her words.
She left.
She was gone.
It was too late.
She didn't even tell him when and where she was leaving. All she said was that she was leaving with her badi ami.
" I hate you Sanam... I hate you..." whispered Aahil.
He paused for a moment and then spoke:
"I hate that I love you so much..."
He crumbled that letter and burned it in his fireplace. He watched as the flames engulfed the piece of paper to it's demise.
Sanam left him all alone... What would he do without seeing her? Without hearing her voice.
Sanam not only left, but took a piece of him with her forever. That void could not be filled by anyone and certainly not Nida.
Rehaan went overseas and settled there after Sanam left. Aahil knew that he was just as heart broken as he was after she left.
What was going on in her mind? Didn't she love him too?
Aahil opened his eyes again and stared out into the distance again. He really needed to get that part back from Sanam... he needed to get whatever he needed to off his chest. He would search for her as soon as he returned from New York.

A few weeks later, Aahil was in New York City, in his downtown loft where he would often seek sanctuary.
He sat back on the patio chair and sighed, " Sanam ki yaad aab tak nahin gayi...Sanam I hate you for taking a part of me away.."
Later that evening, Aahil took a stroll downtown, where he explored the night life. It was amazing... Lights, people...hustle and bustle..
He stopped at Starbucks and ordered a latte. Aahil sat down on one of the empty chairs and enjoyed his latte until he heard a soft voice.
"Allah miyaan!"
Aahi's ears stood as he looked around the place to see where this voice was coming from. It was awfully familiar to Sanam's.
Aahil looked out the window and then froze.
Sanam stood right in front of him, but she was on the other side of the glass. Sanam rubbed her hands together and walked away from the window and towards Times square.
Aahil stood up suddenly and without thinking any further he left his latte unfinished and followed her.
He followed he through the crowd and noticed her stop at the middle, talking to another person.
Another man?
He squinted and recognized him.
It was Rehan.
"Sanam begum, can we go home? Please?" said Rehan as he folded his hands in a plea. Sanam sighed, " Rehan...can we stay... please?"
She looked at him with innocent eyes and he sighed, " Chalo, biwi hone ke naatir... jo hukum aapka"
Sanam smiled and clapped like a child. She took his arm with hers and said, " Zindagi bohot badal gayi hain naa? Kisne socha tha kay... hum dono yahaan honge?"
Rehan put his arms around her, " Sanam...I never thought you'd be with me..."
"Kyun? I married my best friend..."
The ground pulled beneath Aahil's feet as he heard the last few lines. "Married?" said Aahil. That little...Rehan? He didn't care to tell him? What the hell was going on?
But the truth is... Aahil expected this. He had noticed their romance for ages... and eventually it would have happened sooner or later.
But why didn't Rehan tell him? Truth be told, Aahil cut off all contact with Rehan after his nikah with Nida. He enveloped himself in his own loneliness... pushing away everyone he loved.
Aahil's feet took him closer to Sanam and as he got a closer look, he noticed Sanam's hands that were dark brown and with a small diamond ring on her left finger.
Rehan took Sanam's hands in his and kissed them, " Chalein?"
Sanam laughed and nodded. She started to walk until she stopped. Sanam frowned and looked around, " Rehaan, kya aapko kya lagta kay koi humay dekh raha hai?"
"Allah miyan...aur kaun?" joked Rehan. Sanam hit him on the arm softly, " I'm not kidding Rehan... it seems like someone is listening..."
Rehan frowned and looked around to see what Sanam was talking about. " Honestly... Sanam, badi aami must be waiting for us... let's go..."
Sanam sighed, " Nahin Rehaan..."
"Sanam... bohot raat ho gayi hain.. Haya, Rahat aur Badi aammi intezaar kar rahe hain..." said Rehan.
Sanam looked around again and her eyes froze. They froze on a familiar figure in front of her.
Aahil Raza Ibrahim. Rehan looked at his watch and then looked at Sanam who seemed to have froze.
His eyes looked in the direction of hers...
Rehan's eyes widened as he noticed his brother, Aahil standing in front of him. Sanam looked to Rehan and noticed the look of sadness in his eyes as he saw his brother after so many years.
And there his world crashed again. Sanam hardened her expression and stared at him with dislike.
"Aapki zindagi aapko mubarak...Aahil Raza Ibrahim" whispered Sanam.
Subsequently, Aahil heard that line again... it was the last line of the letter that he received from her five years ago.
"Aapki zindagi, aapko mubarak Aahil Raza Ibrahim..." Her voice echoed through his ears.
Sanam held Rehan's hand and led him out of the square and Aahil stood stunned.
Sanam left again...
This time...
She took everything with her.
Aahil turned around and walked in the other direction. His phone rang and he noticed that Nida called him.
He gulped and picked up her call.
"Nida main tumhe talaaq deta hoon...Talaaq deta hoon...Talaaq deta hoon..." said Aahil. All he could hear was screams from the other side of the line.
"YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME AAHIL!" screamed Nida.
Aahil shut the phone and walked away towards his loft, where he would return and contemplate his actions...
Sanam was gone.
So was his existence.

Splash!
Aahil slowly opened his eyes and felt droplets of water on his face. The sun rays tore through his curtains and into his room, invading the privacy of his sleep.
"Aahil...uthiye.." chirped a voice.
He squinted and looked at the woman standing in his room, drying her hair with a towel.
Sanam Ahmed Khan stood in front of him smiling away.
His heart finally stopped beating against his chest. " Sanam, what are you doing?" said a groggy Aahil.
"Mere Jalaad Jin, it's time to wake up...you have a meeting in an hour." replied Sanam as she set the towel down and bent over to the dressing room mirror, lining her eyes with kohl.
"You...Sanam... tum?" stuttered Aahil.
"Aapki yaadaash to kamzoor nahin hui?" asked Sanam with a frown and giggle.
Aahil looked at the dark brown mehndi all over her hands and arms. She wore a dark purple anarkali with matching jewelry.
And then it struck him... they were married... and it was all a dream.
It was a dark dream and reality was different.
