She needed a break, for whatever practical reason, he remain holding on with hope, thus still wearing the ring.

Both are in the same boat, but both express it differently. The one who used to hide is more open and the one who used to be open acts all indifferent. I know this one ended up showing more of his feelings, but she is not far behind.
