Part Three
Asad woke up felling a little disorientated the suns rays blinded him, as he got up images of Zoya flashed before him, he touched his lips as he remembered their kiss 'was that real...did I really kiss her?' He questioned himself as tried to remember what happened next but it all seemed to be a blur. Asad went to shower, when he came out he saw Najma and Ayaan waiting for him. Najma held on to her brother tightly 'you are finally coming home bhaijaan...I can't believe it' Asad kissed the top of her head and then met Ayaan 'what time is the doctor coming...I mean to officially discharge you?' 'Not sure, but he normally does his rounds a little after nine thirty...doctor Zoya should be here soon'. 'Who is doctor Zoya bhaijaan?' 'A trainee doctor she has been looking after my case, I'll introduce her to you when she comes...she's a little weird but cute all the same' Najma and Ayaan looked at Asad wide eyed 'bhaijaan did you just refer to a girl as cute...Ya Allah...how hard find you hit your head?' Najma said as she started to giggle 'ha ha very funny'.
Najma helped Ayaan put Asad's belonging into his bag when the door opened 'finally I never thought you would show...I mean after last night' Asad said looking a little smug 'and why wouldn't I...I mean come on you think I'm cute...and maybe a little more' she said winking at him. Asad looked at her and let out a nervous laugh 'Zoya not in front of my little one...Najma this is doctor Zoya, the one I told you about...and Zoya this is my little sister Najma, and you already have met Ayaan' Najma and Ayaan who already were facing Asad turned their heads and at the same time doctor Akram came in with the nurse.
'Hello Asad, looks like you are ready to go home' 'yes doctor...um this us my sister Najma and brother Ayaan...this is doctor Akram and the nurse who keeps shaking' Najma and Ayaan greeted them all, Zoya couldn't stop giggling at his introductions. Zoya came and stood close to him 'the reason she keeps shaking is because of you...I think she might fancy you' she whispered 'oh please' he said rolling his eyed 'bhaijaan what happened' Najma asked as she went and stood next to him, Asad put his arm around her shoulder 'Zoya thinks the nurse has a crush on me' 'bhaijaan...' Najma was interrupted by the doctor who started talking to Asad. ,
'You are ok to go now...but I will need you to come in a few times for routine check ups' 'sure...thank you doctor' Asad turned around to pick up his bag and jacket, by the time he had finished doctor Akram, Zoya and the nurse had left 'damn...I wanted to talk to her...come on let's go'. As Asad passed the front desk he stopped 'excuse me...can you do me a favour, can you give doctor Zoya Farooqui a message for me?' 'Im sorry sir...I am new here I don't know all the doctors...maybe if you write it down I can put it in her in-tray' 'sure'
I never managed to say bye or thank you to you. But as agreed I would like to meet you, there are a few things I would like to talk about...and I am not just talking about what happened last night. I will wait for you by the little cafe on the corner of Eastern Avenue, it's called Tea Spot...at 12 sharp.
Asad gave the piece of paper to the young girl 'please make sure she gets this it's really important' 'no worries I will do that straight away'.
Asad left the hospital with Najma and Ayaan, he could hardly wait to see Dadda. Asad entered Noor Muhalla after a long four weeks, everything had been lit up for his welcoming home, the entire street was out to meet him. Amongst all the happy faces at a distance he saw Dadda standing holding his arms out, Asad ran to him and hugged him like never before 'how is my sher?' He asked as he held his face in his hands 'I am good Dadda...nothing can ever happen to you sher...I have all your Dua's with me' 'come...everyone has come together to rejoice your come back...go and join in the celebration'.
That night Asad sat in his darkened room thinking about something he seemed to have blocked out for so many years, his Abu. What Zoya said clouded every thought, for the first time he questioned his decision to run away.
The morning could not have come fast enough Asad jumped out of his bed and got ready 'Asad, where are you going in such a hurry?' Dadda called out as he saw him jump over the balcony 'Dadda, I am going to meet a friend...I won't be long' Dadda raised his eyebrow 'a friend...what kind of a friend are you going to meet on a Sunday afternoon...' Asad started to stutter 'um...no...I mean it's just that...this was the only time...' 'Whats her name?' Asad looked at Dadda surprised 'don't look at me like that, you forget I am not only older than but wiser too...so who is she?' Looking rather embarrassed Asad started fidgeting 'her name is Zoya, she is a doctor' 'Ahhh so the patient falls in love with the doctor...must be a hell of a girl if she got your attention' Asad wasn't able to say anything 'I wont be long'.
Asad reached the Tea Spot to find Zoya already waiting for him 'hi...am I late or were you early?' Zoya looked up at him with a smile that was not only radiating but breathtakingly beautiful 'I guess I was a little early' Asad sat down 'did you just come from the hospital...I mean you are still wearing your coat' 'yeah, I guess I did...how are you feeling?' 'To be honest I am not sure...physically I feel fine but since being in hospital something seems odd...different...and somewhere, somehow you are part of that' 'really how so?' 'How do you know me...I mean about my dad...I know I have never met you before my past died with who I was almost 7-8 years ago...so how do you know...and don't say that you read everything through my eyes...you know that's not possible' Zoya smiled at him 'anything is possible Asad...I don't know much...only a little from which I could only guess' 'no...not buying that either...how do you know me Zoya...why is it that every time I am with you I feel connected to you, like you are a part of me...and if for arguments sake we do know each other then why is it that I have only met you now?' 'Because there is a time for everything, I guess before now you never needed me and now that you do I am here' 'ok stop...I am no good with riddles Zoya just tell me'. Zoya stretched her hand out and placed it over Asad's, her warm touch made his insides shiver 'would you like to take a walk?'.
Zoya entwined her fingers with Asad's and held on to his hand as they started to walk, Asad was so lost into her he paid little attention to where they were going. After the longest walk Asad stopped 'Zoya you haven't answered my question' Zoya turned around to face him, she cupped his face 'you will find all the answers to your questions in there Asad' Asad looked at her confused then followed her hand to where she was pointing' as soon as he saw where he was standing Asad stopped breathing, his face lost all it's colour as if his his entire body had been drained of blood.
Asad fisted his hand and with blackened eyes he turned to look at her 'what the hell...what are we doing her...why have you brought me here Zoya' he hissed in pure rage. 'As much as it angers you...you need to be here...go Asad he needs you' Zoya had lead Asad to the very house he had left many years ago, the house that took everything away from him. Asad pulled back his hand and turned around to walk off 'wait...if you leave now you will never forgive yourself...Asad you need to do this...please go...you Abu needs you' 'like hell he does, he didn't need me then and doesn't need me now...linger it...he put you up to this...this is all his doing...well doctor Zoya Farooqui you can go in there and tell him that his little plan failed...I want nothing to do with him or that evil cow that lives with him' Zoya pulled at Asad's arm 'that evil cow left many years ago Asad, your Abu needs you...just once go in...that's all I ask' Asad wasn't sure what he was feeling, a mixture of anger, pain and shock was confusing his mind beyond belief 'you can do this...come' Zoya held his hand and led him to the front door. As Asad stood in front of his once upon a time home his insides felt as if they were about to explode, he tightened his grip on Zoya's hand 'I can't do this Zoya...let me go back' 'not after having come so far Asad...I am right here with you...you don't need to be so scared'
Asad stepped inside into nothing but darkness, the house was dusty and smelt of dampness, as if no one had lived here for years. As they continued to walk further in Zoya opened the door to the study where in the far corner a little light flickered 'Asad go...he is right there' 'wh...what do I say to him' Zoya cupped his face 'you will know...once you stand before him it will come to you' Zoya tip toed to place a soft kiss on his forehead before she ushered him a little further.
The few feet that Asad walked to the chair his Abu sat on was the longest and hardest steps he had ever taken, feeling his mouth and throat dry up Asad tensed every muscle in his body. As he approached the chair he turned to see an old man lying holding a frame against his chest. Asad bent down and pulled the frame away, he turned it around to see a picture that was taken of the three of them the day that his Ammi passed away. As tears stung his eyes Asad placed his hand on his dad's shoulder 'Abu...' Rashid in his frail condition opened his eyes as he did he let out a silent pain filled cry 'Asad...is that you beta...you came you finally came...I am so sorry my son will you not forgive me. Asad held his fathers hands in his and shook his head 'Abu...what happened to you?' 'I am bring punished for my wrong doings beta...Allah is punishing me for what I did to you' Asad who was now crying jumped up to take his father into his embrace. 'I am here now Abu...you don't have to worry about anything...come on let me take you...you need medical attention'. Asad lifted his father up he turned to call out for Zoya but she had gone 'Zoya...Zoya'.
After the doctors had seen to Rashid they came out to see Asad 'you are lucky you brought him to us when you did, any longer and you may have lost him...he is weak but stable, it will take time for him to recover' 'thank you doctor' 'If you come with me to the front I need you to sign a few papers'. Asad waited a to the front desk for the doctor to return with the papers when the young receptionist saw him.
'Sir, you are the one who left a note for doctor Zoya...right?' 'Yes...is she here...I mean is she back on duty...can I speak to her' 'no...I mean...hang on one minute' the receptionist came back with the same piece of paper that he had given her to give to Zoya 'I am sorry sir, I checked everywhere asked everyone, we don't have a doctor Zoya here, I even checked with the medical college affiliated to our hospital' Asad looked at her as if she had gone mad 'that's not possible I was in here for four weeks and she was the one looking after me...ask doctor Akram...he will tell you' not waiting for a response Asad hurried towards doctor Akram's room.
Without knocking Asad barged in 'where is she...she was always with and the nurse so how can they say that she isn't here...where is doctor Zoya' doctor Akram pushed back his chair and walked around to Asad 'Asad, I need you to come with me' Asad shrugged his hand off 'no you tell me where she is...you saw her, Ayaan, Najma that nurse you all saw her so where is she?'
'Asad, please I will answer all your questions come. Asad followed doctor Akram into what looked like the hospital library, he asked Asad to sit down and went to get a folder which he placed in front of him 'what's this?' 'Open it and you will see' Asad opened the folder to see a picture of Zoya, seeing her beautiful smile instantly calmed him down. He looked back up at doctor Akram 'you need to read this Asad'. Asad looked back down ago the file as he continued to read his face filled with shock, horror and disbelief 'thi...this can't be right...there has to be a mistake...you know it yourself...is this some kind of sick joke...because I tell it's not funny' Asad stood up 'where is she...you tell me now doctor or I swear by Allah I will cause you some serious damage' 'you can cause all the damage you want Asad it won't change the truth...and the truth as you read it right here in this file is that doctor Zoya Farooqui died four weeks ago' 'no...no..NO, she was there with me...I touched her, felt her, talked to her, she took my blood sample...I kis...today...I met her on Eastern Avenue she took me to my house...my old house she helped me...my Abu, I just brought him in...if all this happened how can she be dead?'
'I don't know, there is no scientific explanation...the night you were brought in was the same night doctor Zoya was brought in, she had been ill for some time and was undergoing hospital treatment, we were unable to diagnose her condition in time, as her condition worsened she stop responding to medication...Asad she was in the same ward as you when you were unconscious, Zoya was in the bed next to your for five days before she passed away...the only thing I can think of is that in your unconscious state your brain was still active enough to pick up on what was going on around you, you must have heard and absorbed...I don't know...may be we need to have you examined I mean by a psychiatrist'
Asad stumbled backwards 'I am not crazy I don't need a psychiatrist...and you can keep your pathetic theory to yourself' 'Asad calm down...please just think about it...when the nurse came to treat you...why was she so scared...it's because you sat there talking to someone who wasn't there...'
Asad still wasn't believing it, holding his head in his hands he fell to the floor as everything ran through his head. Zoya's appearance, her coming in his room without him realising, the way she knew things about him, when Ayaan and Najma kept looking at him oddly...but how could it be it was so real, how could that kiss not have been real...she took him to his Abu.
As soon as he thought about his father Asad ran towards the main building thinking that if Zoya was not real then this couldn't be either. Asad pushed open the door to see Rashid lying on the bed sleeping 'Ya Allah...this is not happening to me...this can't be real...please let me see her once...I need to know...she is real please' Asad had never felt so much pain his insides churned as he tried to breathe.
'Asad Ahmed Khan, son of the notorious Shaka and in such a state...what will people say if they see you like this?' Asad shot his head up to see Zoya standing before him, he ran up to her and grabbed hold of her crashing her into his chest 'you are here...you are real...then why...why are they telling me that...that..' 'That I died?' Asad pulled her back he cupped her face and kissed her like a crazed animal 'if that were true this would not be real...I just kissed you like I did the other day...if you are not here then how is it possible?'
'My being, my voice, my touch and the kiss is all real Asad...but only to you...I only exist for you...when people pass away they don't always cross to the other side...they become lost souls...and it is only until they complete what they are here to do they can cross over...I needed you to find your Abu...and you did...and now that I have done that I can finally go'
Asad whole body started to shake 'go...no you can't go...you can't come into my life and then just go...I...I love you...and I need you' Zoya smiled at him 'and I love you too...if life had been different we could have met and maybe been as one...but it isn't different...I needed to bring you to him, because he needed you Asad...and now I have to go'
'Please Zoya...no...not like this no one believes me they think I am crazy...how will I go on?' 'Like you have always done so...you will live for your Abu...you are not crazy...when Allah takes away something he always gives something back in return...Your Ammi left, you suffered so much but in return you got Dadda, Najma and Ayaan...I came to you...and I am not leaving you alone in return you have your Abu with you...Asad tomorrow you will find another Zoya...one that will not be a lost soul but a person that will love you and hold you until the end..' Zoya stepped closer to him and held his hand 'you take care...live life in happiness, in peace and in love'.
It had been three weeks since Asad last saw or even spoke of Zoya, Rashid had really improved. Once released from hospital Asad took Rashid to meet Dadda 'I am forever indebted to you...what you have done for my son is...' Dadda placed his hand on Rashid's shoulder 'Asad is and will remain my son too...as much as you may be against what goes on within the parameters of this colony, we never bring harm unnecessarily...if you wish to take your son you can' Rashid shook his head 'you, Ayaan, Najma and the people of this colony who he has grown up with mean a lot more to him...I would had never take him away...but if you don't mind an extra person...I would like to stay here with my son too'.
Weeks turned into months Asad had almost regained normality in his life, finishing college and passing with the highest marks Asad was finally set to start university. 'It will go down in history...that a boy from Noor Muhalla, the son of Shaka will be starting medicine...my son will become a doctor'.
Asad stepped foot into the National College of Medicine on his first day, he looked up hoping that she would be looking down 'this one is for you'. As he continued to walk he came crashing down as he collided with someone 'Ya Allah, what is wrong with you...are you blind?' Asad stood up and held his hand out for her to take, as she stood up and pushed her hair back Asad stopped, he couldn't stop staring at her 'if you have quite finished gawping at me can I have my hand back' 'so...sorry...are you ok' 'yes I'm fine...next time you might wan to look ahead as you walk instead of up to the heavens'.
As she walked off Asad was left stumped the resemblance was uncanny 'excuse me...sorry...are you new here...I mean first year?' He asked as he walked up to her 'yes...I am...I take it you are too' Asad nodded 'what is your name?' 'Asad' 'hi Asad, I'm Zoya, Zoya Farooqui'.
A lot of you guessed right but obviously i didn't confirm. I know it's not realistic...but it was just an experimental piece of writing
