Married to Darkness
CH-12
It was way past twelve in the night but Zoya was having a hard time getting lost in sleep. As if every part of her body refused to give in. She was twisting and turning (and gazing at Mr. Khan, which she wouldn't accept)
Asad however was aware of Zoya's state all this while but preferred to act sleepy to avoid any kind of confrontation with her.
For some reason Zoya kept reminding herself that she was in fact sleeping in the same room as Asad and it wasn't some stupid fantasy of hers. Yeah fantasy'...because she has been having quiet a lot of those in the past week! If you come to think of it, it was not that big of a deal that Zoya was making it to be but Zoya was Zoya. Drama was bound to happen!
After another twenty minutes of trying to sleep, Zoya gave up and decided to walk over to the small garden, overlooking the room, in an attempt to find some peace. Asad was not absolutely sure of what she was trying to do and hence followed her quietly. (Don't ask why, he just did)
She sat on the porch- swing like she had done many times before during those endless and painful nights when she had longed for some support and care. She had come a long way, hasn't she? Zoya reminded herself.
Asad stared at Zoya, from behind the door, wondering what she must have been thinking. She was clearly lost in thought and strangely Asad wanted to know of it.
A moment later, Zoya felt that there was something, rather someone behind the door, "Who is it?" she said cautiously.
The unknown figure turned to walk out but Asad's crisp white Kurta, glistening under the moonlight, gave it away.
"Mr. Khan?" Zoya exclaimed, partly in shock.
Asad stopped in his tracks as he heard his name being called out. He had been caught!
"Yes?" he asked calmly as he turned around to face Zoya.
"Mr. Khan are you spying on me? What are you doing here?"
"No need to dramatize the situation Zoya, I just found you missing from the bedroom and decided to look for you. That's it."
"And since when have you started looking out for me?"
"Since the day we had come to terms with the relationship we happen to share." Asad replied immediately, not bothering to choose the words carefully.
Zoya smiled at his response. So Mr. Khan is really serious about their pact isn't he?
"Okay fine Mr. Khan I believe you."
"Anyways, what are you doing here? Don't you want to sleep? I told you before Zoya...if you are not comfortable sleeping besides me then I could have easily slept elsewhere."
Oh poor Mr. khan, I am more than comfortable...it's just the hotness that you are which is making it exceedingly difficult for me to keep my eyes off you.
Only she never said what she felt. "I don't know why I am not able to sleep...I would like to stay here for a while."
"Okay" Asad agreed and started leaving when Zoya stopped him, "Would you stay here with me for a while?" Her earnest eyes speaking of the company she desperately needed.
Asad contemplated over the possible repercussions if he were to say yes to Zoya's offer but it was her eyes that pulled him to conform.
"I will, but only for a while"
She smiled wide as she led him to sit besides her on the swing. "Thanks", she said softly.
"What were you thinking Zoya?" Asad was surprised at his courage when he inquired her about the thing that was disturbing him since a while before.
"What was I thinking? Well, many things Mr. Khan"
"What many things'?"
"Do you want me to say the truth?"
"Yes, go ahead"
"I was thinking of how much has changed since the time I first came here. When I became your wife" she looked at him during the last bit, "I am not crying or that much of a confused soul...I have learnt to leave everything in the hands of fate."
Asad silently listened to her as she continued, "I find peace here Mr. Khan, and I have found that all those times when I have been alone. Don't get me wrong, I am not blaming you, at least not entirely but this how it is." She sighed, "You know what's funny? I just don't know how to hate you."
That was so out of the blue.
Asad was taken aback, he didn't know what to make out of what she said.
"I think you should hate me, that way it will be easier for you to get over the pain that I have caused."
"I can get over the pain but how will I ever get over you?" she said as her emotions took over her.
For a moment there was silence.
"I mean...err...I mean how will I get over a whole relationship?" she tried to cover for her mistake.
"There has never been an actual relationship. Never between us, truthfully. You have nothing to worry about Zoya."
His words resounded in her mind and it was hurtful. A lot more than expected. Maybe because she had started to believe in a possibility of their togetherness.
"Don't you miss your family Zoya? Your home... New York?"
She smiled internally. What was she to say to him? Obviously she couldn't say that she had found a new home' for herself. That she had started to like or rather love her new abode.
"I do miss them Mr. Khan. I miss them a lot. Especially Api and Jiju, my friends, my old life in New York. I miss Muski" she paused for a moment, "Vaise she thinks that you are as hot as a teapot!" She burst into fits of laughter reminding him of the embarrassment that her best friend had caused earlier that night. Only this time Zoya was shamelessly laughing, her courageous self taking over her cautious side.
Asad turned red with embarrassment. He wished that he could evaporate in air if he could. "There is nothing to laugh about."
"Absolutely Mr. Khan. You are actually HOT!" she exclaimed, finally conveying her inner thoughts. She was indeed having fun teasing the Akdu in front of her. Naughty Zoya on the roll!
"I think it's quiet late, I am going inside." he stood up to leave but Zoya held back his hand to stop him. "Oh ho Mr. Khan! I didn't know that you can't take a joke...please don't go."
The slightest bit of contact that they had made was sending Zoya's insides into a flurry; she pulled him back on the seat, again not caring much about how irrationally she was behaving at the moment.
"Zoya...", Asad was about to say something but Zoya cut him short, "Please don't say anything Mr. Khan, Can't you just give me company? I am not really asking for much..."
"Theek hai but please don't mention anything of that sort again"
She held back her laughter and promised him that she wouldn't. After all, it wasn't always that they got a time like this to do nothing but casually talk.
" Zoya, what was about the prince your friend was talking about?" Now it was Asad's turn to embarrass Zoya. Time to settle the scores!
"Uh who...nothing...it was nothing..."
" It didn't seem like nothing. You and your friend were quiet into the prince talk. I really want to know..."
Asad was surprised at the relaxed nature of it all. He himself liked that they were having this mundane conversation. He felt something strange around Zoya. Something magnetically alluring.
Zoya shifted in her seat uncomfortably. Should she tell him? But it was too childish a thing to say. He might think that I am a weirdo!
But doesn't he already think that I am a weirdo?
She finally decided to speak truthfully. "It was about what I believed in since a very long time, Mr. Khan. Since I was a little girl. I know it will sound very stupid but you asked for it, so don't blame me. I believed in those fairy tales that they tell you as a child. I believed or still believe in the possibility of Happily ever after'. I was a dreamer and always felt that there was that one person, my Prince Charming that is, who was made just for me. And I wouldn't be happy until I find him and spend my whole life with him. All my friends used to tease me as I was very picky when it came to dating people...in fact I was a failure in the dating scene actually...I never found that one person...that one person who could love me like there was no tomorrow..." she spoke in one single breath, looking thoughtfully into nothingness as she felt the power of every word she spoke.
This took him back to what Zoya had written in her article. He realized how deeply she felt about falling in love and bonds that last a lifetime. A feeling of guilt resurfaced in him, as he understood the kind of happiness she was denied of but rightfully deserved.
"I wish that you find him one day," he said with a strange ache in his heart as he thought of Zoya with someone else.
She looked deep into his eyes conveying all the things she really wanted to say. Everything that she felt for him. That she wanted him to believe in their relationship. She wanted him to understand that maybe she had found her prince in him. That in spite of all the hurdles there are to face in future, they can make it till the end. That maybe they are meant to be together. Maybe she has found her light in the darkness. And maybe that she loves him.
To an extent Zoya was successful only if Asad would accept. He extracted his eyes away from hers, afraid that he might find something that would force him to steer far away.
They sat there for minutes without saying a single word. Both deeply lost in thought.
A while later Asad felt Zoya's face drop on his shoulder as he realized that she had fallen asleep. He didn't quiet know what to do for a second. Should he wake her up? But she was looking too comfortable for him to disrupt her peace. Just then a drop of water fell on Zoya's rosy cheek. It had started to drizzle.
He brushed it aside with his fingers, tenderly and this slightest bit of movement caused her to clutch on to him even more tightly. She held him close to feel his warmth amidst the chilly breeze that took speed gradually.
She looked beautiful.
Asad couldn't shift his gaze away from her ethereal face. She looked like a small child cocooned safely in his arms. He felt this heaviness erupting in her heart. He had never felt that way before. He brushed away the few loose strands of her hair falling on her face and stared at her for a while longer. She looked so innocent and fragile. As if she would break if he wouldn't hold her.
The drizzling got stronger and so he decided to lift her up to the bedroom instead of waking her up. It felt like the right think to do even if his rational self warned him against it.
He placed her carefully on left side of the bed but she refused to let go of his collar that she had been holding on too. He gently freed her hands from there and tucked her under the duvet.
Another night of no sleep, he thought to himself as he took his place besides her. He didn't even want to take those sleeping pills that night...he just wanted to think.
Think about Zoya.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"You carried me here?" Zoya asked as she rubbed her eyes, clearing her vision, as she woke up and realized her position on the bed.
" A..a...Yes", said Asad uncomfortably.
"You could have woken me up."
"You seemed very comfortable in my arms for me to have done that," said Asad, regretting it the other minute. Verbal- Vomit' was probably an infectious disease. Zoya has certainly passed it on to Asad, it seemed.
She passed him a broad smile, laughing internally on seeing his white horror stricken face.
AWKWARD. AWKWARD. AWKWARD.
----------------------------------------------------------
The breakfast in the morning went smoothly. Thanks to Mamu and Mumani who kept the atmosphere light with their teasing jokes and stories.
Zoya was very happy that she could meet them. It bought her closer to the Khan family.
Mamu and Mumani were to visit the orphanage in the morning and Asad had to drop them to the airport after picking them from there in the evening. Zoya also wanted to tag along and hence she decided to reach Asad's office directly so that she could see them off as well.
-----------------------------------------------
"You have no idea how glad I am to have you here Zoya! And bless that time when I decided to hand over the Random Ramblings column to you! You have proved yourself and your caliber in the first run only. We have been getting so many mails and letters, from people who want to talk to you and read more from you... I am so very happy! You will make our lifestyle supplement a great success!" Divya chirped in glee as she broke the news to Zoya. Her column had been received very well by the masses.
"That's so great to hear Divya" Zoya said in an ecstatic voice, " I am so glad that I could meet your expectations and my writing has been appreciated by the readers. It gives me great satisfaction that my work has added to the reputation of this publication. I feel great!"
All through the day Zoya was busy replying to the numerous emails and questions that people had left her. Not to forget, she was completely enjoying the experience! Writing has always been her mediator to reach out to people and finally when she was succeeding in doing so, her happiness knew no bounds.
She felt this need to share her little victory with Asad. As if that was the only way she could believe in her achievement which otherwise was so surreal to take in,
She glanced at the clock; it was time for her to go. She grabbed all her belongings and rushed to the cab waiting outside the building.
"Bhaiya Ji, Take me to Dilshad Constructions head office", she instructed the driver quickly as she braced herself in the cab.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Ma'am that way please" the lady at the reception guided Zoya to Asad's cabin upon her arrival at Dilshad Constructions.
Zoya Knocked at the door when the receptionist left and waited for Asad to respond.
"Come in", came his voice from inside and without wasting a single minute Zoya made her way inside.
"You?" Asad asked surprised, "We have another hour to go."
"I know Mr. Khan but these days you can't predict the traffic can you? Plus I had promised Mamu and Mumani that I would come too and hence I didn't want to take any chances."
"Well, that's okay but you will have to wait. In the meanwhile you can sit here" he pointed towards the sofa in the corner, "I have to go through some files"
Zoya sat down on the sofa area and busied herself in some random magazines, which were kept on the coffee table. She was gauging his expressions so as to find the right time to tell him about her first success in her career. She was so excited to hear his opinion.
Just when Asad stood up after he had arranged all his files in a stack, Zoya decided to speak, "You know Mr. Khan, my editor told me today that my column in the paper had been received really well by the readers and I have got such great responses from people...I just thought I could share this with you. I am so so happy today!" she smiled excitedly.
Asad was highly pleased on hearing this. He was glad that Zoya had found her calling and had managed to do well in her first attempt. He remembered the shivering Zoya, the day she had her interview, how scared was she?!
Asad had read her column the other day and in spite of the questions that it raised in his mind, he has found it to be extremely polished, something that one can connect to easily.
"That's great news Zoya. You must be really talented," he said genuinely.
His eyes were proud and Zoya could very well see that. Hell, she could feel the happiness that those eyes were reflecting for her. Still no smiles, but something greater and beyond.
Interrupting what can be classified under an intense eye-lock session came a knock at the door.
"Come-in" Asad turned away to attend whosoever had walked in.
It was Tanya, his HR manager. "Hello Sir. I hope I am not interrupting you two," she said politely.
"Of course you ARE. Bitch" said Zoya's inner voice.
Zoya didn't like this Tanya girl at first glance. She walked in wearing ultra high heels, a crisp office-suit and those perfectly manicured nails. What was there to dislike? you may ask...WELL EVERYTHING!
Zoya didn't like her presence one bit and the strange thing was that she herself couldn't understand the sudden disliking she was feeling towards this random woman. She had not even met her properly for god sakes! Maybe it was the flirtatious smile she was passing on to Asad, or maybe it was the way she was dressed. Her skirt was cinched way above her knees and she was making sure that her long legs got all the attention they were crying out for. Only Asad was hardly bothered. Haha! But even still, this girl was danger.
"No Ms. Garg you are not interrupting. What brings you here?"
"Oh please call me Tanya sir. I always keep telling you." she let out a coy smile, " We know each other for such a quiet a long time, don't we?"
Zoya's ears were on high alert. Long time???? What does she mean by a long time? And what is with the way she is smiling??? Arghhh!
"Fine, Ms. Tanya, now will you please get to the point?"
Zoya did a mental dance upon hearing his reply.
"Mr. Shah sent over an invite for you and your wife on the occasion of their daughter's wedding this Thursday. I know that the protocol is to refuse such invitations as you have told but they are one of our biggest investors, I think that there would be no harm in attending it. Rest is upon you Sir but they have been calling all departments since morning to reach you."
"I will see to it, you may go now. Thank you" Asad dismissed her politely.
"Very well Sir. And if you don't mind, do consider wearing that Tie I gifted you on your birthday. It would really suit you", and saying this, Tanya walked out of the room leaving an outrageous Zoya behind.
So they have exchanged gifts??? She has gifted him a tie?! That bitch even knows my husband's BIRTHDAY???
I am going to have to talk to Mr. Khan. This is getting out of hand. Who knows that she could charm her way into Mr. Khan's heart? But Asad is not like that. But this Tanya is! Oh God! I am so furious!!!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"Khuda Hafiz" both Zoya and Asad bid farewell to Mamu and Mumani at the airport.
"Khuda Hafiz bacchon. Inshallah, we will come and visit you soon."
Mamu and Mumani were very grateful and showered the newly married couple with blessings as they left. Zoya felt sad letting them go, even though they had been recent acquaintances.
"Let's get in the car," Asad said as Zoya waived a final goodbye to them.
Asad started the engine and looked at her once again. She had gotten into the car and now had the same odd expression on her face as she had through the car ride to the orphanage earlier in the evening. Zoya had been unusually quiet since then (excusing all those times when Asad noticed her talking to her own self, making weird-scary expressions.) What was bothering her?
"I don't like her" Zoya said breaking the silence that had set in.
Asad was confused as to whom she was referring to, "You don't like whom Zoya?"
"That Tanya girl in your office."
"I don't see any reason why you would feel that way. You haven't even met her"
"I am a woman and us females have this special power called the sixth-sense' and going by that I am telling you that she spells danger!" Zoya said not realizing how crazy she was sounding.
"That's odd. I don't think so Zoya."
"Of course you don't! She gifts you ties and claims that it would perfectly suit you'...remembers your birthday and what not!...of course you know her well enough to not judge her character!" she burst out at once.
"What is all of this about? I don't even know which tie she had gifted me. She probably knows my birthday because it is in the office records. And anyways, how does that even bother you?"
"Arghhh! It bothers me because I-" Zoya held herself back as she realized that she was about to say something that she would regret saying and instead, " It bothers me because you have never told me... when is your birthday Mr. Khan?"
"Zoya I seriously am not able to register what you are trying to prove here? My birthday is on 23rd of February. Nothing so special about it. How does that connect to the fact that you dislike Tanya?"
"I just don't like her Bas! And my birthday is on 6th of June."
"Why are we suddenly discussing birthdays?" Asad asked truly baffled at their senseless conversation.
"Because I love Birthdays. I love everything about birthdays! Birthdays. Birthdays. Birthdays. I just want to discuss birthdays! But I hate that Tanya for whatever reasons, Okay?"
"I am amused." That's all Asad managed to say, completely taken aback by the blind rage that Zoya was letting out.
-----------------------------------------------------------
"Mr. Khan would you please stop here for a few minutes. We have ran out of milk at home, I will just buy a few packets from the grocery" Zoya walked out of the car as Asad parked in the driveway.
She had said a few minutes but returned after a good half hour as she had found many things that she needed to refill in the kitchen. But what she hadn't expected was the sight in front of her as she walked towards the car.
A large group of people had gathered around Asad and a man whom she didn't recognize, while they were involved in a maddening physical debacle. The rage with which Asad was hitting the other man was frightening. She panicked as she asked for help and called out to the people around to somehow stop the fight.
What is Mr. Khan doing?
"Mr. Khan...just let him go...please...what are you trying to do" she pleaded as the fight grew even more intense.
The man hit Asad back with a metal stick that was lying on the ground and for that one moment Zoya's heartbeat stopped. Blood streamed out from the corner of Asad's face as he tried to hit him back equally. But even so no pain reflected in his eyes, it was only anger and fury that she could see.
Zoya was now crying, crying for help and at the same time begging to bring an end to the fight. The other man had a fierce expression on his face and his sea green rage filled eyes were scaring Zoya so much that she thought that she would pass out with fright, in that very moment.
"Please leave him alone...Mr. Khan...just please...I am not feeling well...Please I beg of you...just leave him...leave him please" she cried and this time Asad heard. He saw her weak frame leaning on to his shoulder trying to stop him. Afraid that she might get hurt, he shrugged off the man's color, took Zoya by her hand and proceeded to leave.
"I will not leave you for this Asad Ahmed Khan. You have done enough." The man's voice followed.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Asad and Zoya had now retuned back to the Khan Villa. Zoya was still partly in shock as Asad had given her absolutely no explanation whatsoever of what occurred a while ago.
He marched towards his room and needless to say, Zoya followed.
"Mr. Khan what was all that about? Have you even looked at yourself? You are bleeding for god sakes!"
"Just leave me alone Zoya. You have nothing to do with it!"
"Again! Again that attitude of yours...and No I am not going any where. First I will clean your wounds. I'll just come back," she said adamantly. "You don't want to tell me anything, then don't. But you can't stop me from doing this.", she added.
Her heart clenched every time she looked at his bruised face. She could care less of what or why the fight took place. The only thing that bothered her was how mercilessly he had been wounded. The images refused to leave her mind.
"Ahh...", he winced softly as Zoya attended to the wound on his head. Just then he felt a drop of water on his cheek. He looked up to find a crying Zoya carefully wiping off the blood from the sides.
"I was so scared Mr. Khan...and this cut is thankfully not too deep as the rod was blunt otherwise do you even have any idea of what could have happened?" she sniffed back her sobs as she worked her way through.
But Asad remained silent. He couldn't come up with anything that he could say to her. Rather, he didn't want to. He was physically and emotionally drained out and wanted to be left at peace.
Zoya bandaged him across his entire forehead and applied antiseptic on all the small cuts on his face.
She looked silently at him for a while. Her hands stroked his hair gently as her heart filled up again. Asad didn't want her to do that. He couldn't afford to pay the price of letting someone in his miseries again. He didn't want her to feel anything, absolutely anything for him but that's exactly what she did. Her endless tears poured out all the emotions from her eyes as she kept stroking his hair fondly, not caring about another thing in the world.
"I will get some coffee for you"
-----------------------------------------------------------
A few moments later she returned but held her back from entering the room. She observed Asad as he clutched on to a piece of paper, possibly reading it. Tears were flowing from his eyes. He looked severely in pain, amidst a turmoil that could destroy him. But she just stood there, afraid to make any move that could make things fall apart.
She noticed that Asad took sleeping pills but this time she didn't stop him. She felt that he deserved a peaceful sleep that night, so he let him be.
Zoya kept standing there until she was sure that Asad had fallen deep into sleep. She contemplated over reading what was written in the paper and soon agreed on going ahead. After all it might contain some useful information that could lead to her finding truth about Asad's past.
She tip-toed towards the drawer besides Asad's bed and softly slid it out to find the paper inside.
Her hands were shaking for an unknown reason. As if it was the god's way of telling her that she might find something that would shake her beliefs. Something that had the capbaility of destroying her faith in him.
It was a crumpled piece of paper that looked like it had been read several times. She carefully opened it and it was a letter...
XXX
Bhaijaan,
I still can't believe you did what you did. I am in shock, really. I can't believe that my brother who had done nothing wrong in his life, for whom I had so much of respect for could do something so shameful.
I am ashamed to call you my brother.
Because of you I had to face so many people. Ammi had to face those allegations, questioning her upbringing, her values.
I have heard enough and I can't anymore. Those voices will never stop and however much I try to forget them, you will always be related to me, not by any bond but by blood. And that disgusts me.
I can't even explain to you the extent of humiliation I have to face in my house here, every single day and all because of you. It kills me from inside and I can't take it anymore. I can't even face my own husband. Our family's name has been crushed and destroyed.
How could you? Even though you knew that I was married in that house? Didn't you even once think about my future, my life?
But now I have had enough. Enough of all the abuses that people hurl at our family and me. I have had my fair share of pain and I never thought that you would be the sole reason behind it.
I have decided to give up on my life. I have decided to put an end to all my sufferings because I am too weak to know all that and still find a reason to live. And even though it's completely my decision but your sins are solely responsible for it.
It's my final goodbye.
-Najma
XXX
Zoya felt shivers as she read the last bits of Najma's suicide letter. Her breathing was heavy as she struggled to even stand properly. Every single word mentioned crushed her from inside.
Farida Bi was right, Najma did blame Asad. But why? It was still not clear.
She kept the letter at its rightful place and sat down for a moment, Najma's words still circulating in her mind.
What had Asad done? And why was Najma so deeply affected by it? All these questions were wrecking her soul.
Asad had done something horribly wrong for which Najma and her family had to pay? Also why was the man at the driveway so furious at him? Can Asad really be the culprit? The thought jolted her body and broke her to trembles.
Is she really falling in love with the wrong person?
