A Perfect Dinner!
The Asad Ahmed Khan, yes the one who had vowed to never even step inside the house of his enemy, his so called abbu was now living in the very same house. Who knew that the place he wanted to run away from will be the very same place he'll land up in. The Khan Mansion had become just an empty house, it was no longer the home where laughter and happiness reverberated.
Asad sat down on the chair in the dining room, he didn't want to eat anything of the house but his ammi's promise always left him helpless. He looked up to see Zoya walk down with Humaira and Nuzhat by her side. He scowled at her, he thought that he would get a way out of here if Zoya refused to stay here after whatever had happened with her but no, the traitor betrayed him and now he was stuck in this house which he hated with a passion. Zoya looked at him and smiled but Asad did not smile back in fact he looked away. Zoya knew he was angry and she would have to do something to make up to him. Zoya walked down towards the dining area and was confused whether to sit or help in serving everyone when Humaira helped her by asking her to sit and relax. Zoya sat down beside Dilshad and looked at Asad to see him cringing and massaging his head in irritation, she was going to tell him to behave when she saw the reason for his irritation. Nuzhat had arranged the cutlery wrong, his glass was kept on the wrong side, his serviette was missing, the position of the spoon and the fork was interchanged and Zoya's eyes had become so conditioned at spotting dust or droplets of water that from her seat itself she could see a tiny drop of water on the rim of the glass. The sight made her remember an old line she had heard somewhere,
"The dishes had to be sparkling, the silverware had to shine or else the Almighty would refuse to dine."
She chuckled and saw Dilshad staring at her son as well. Dilshad was about to get up to go and place everything in order when Zoya kept her hand on her shoulder and asked her to sit.
"Here Nuzhat let me do it." She offered.
"But baji I've got it, you can sit and enjoy your dinner."
"Well I can enjoy my dinner but I can't say the same about Jahapanah." Zoya chuckled. Asad looked at her incredulously for calling him that in front of these people but he couldn't help but smile, she had used that name after such a long time.
Nuzhat was confused and so were the others. Zoya first wiped off the droplet of water off the glass because she knew that was one thing that was bugging him more than anything. She then made sure the spoon, fork, bowls, serviette, glass and everything was in their rightful place. Asad visibly relaxed and sat back letting Zoya do her job. She took some tissues and cleaned every speck of dust that she could see, making sure the table was not just clean but Jahapanah clean. Everyone looked at them weirdly; they couldn't understand what was the difference between Nuzhat laying the table and Zoya doing that. When Zoya thought that everything was spotless she smiled satisfactorily and moved towards her chair only to be stopped by the Almighty.
"Um, Ms Farooqui!" was all he said and pointed at a spot on the table beside the glass which Zoya hadn't seen. Dilshad shook her head and so did Zoya. She bent down with the napkin and rubbed at the wrong place. Asad grabbed the tissue from her and rubbed the spot himself.
"Done Jahapanah now can this kaneez go and eat her dinner?" She said dramatically. Asad rolled his eyes at her childishness and motioned her to sit. Zoya was hungry and the food was delicious just when she took the next bite she stopped chewing and looked at Asad who was just about to take the bite of the same curry. She swallowed the half-chewed bite and yelled,
"Mr Khan stop!" and along with Asad everyone else too stopped eating and turned to look at Zoya with annoyance clearly visible on their face.
"Arrey aaj khana milega bhi ya nahi." Razia huffed. Zoya ignored her.
"Mr Khan don't eat that curry, it has peanuts in it."
Asad looked at the spoon and kept it back on the plate.
"That's ok Ms Farooqui, don't worry, I won't eat it!" He said calmly, he knew how much she worried about him and his health.
"Do not worry?" She huffed and went to take his plate.
"Here give it to me I'll get a fresh plate for you. Do not worry, huh?" She went inside the kitchen muttering to herself, she came back with a fresh plate and served him food all over again.
"Agar aap logo ka ho gaya ho toh kya ab hum shanti se bina drama ke dinner kare?" Gafur said, he was on the verge on losing his patience. Zoya nodded and went back to her place. Dilshad looked at everyone and then at Asad and Zoya, today she felt proud not only of her son but also of her soon to-be daughter-in-law. She knew Zoya will always be the one who would stay with Asad through thick and thin and no one can take better care of him, no one can deal with him like Zoya does. She sent a silent prayer to keep her children together and happy. The dinner was now perfect!
