Dear soup,
Perhaps it is not asads bones that were meant to be rebroken. Perhaps it was for Rashid and Dilshad to realize that there has to be some closure to their unfinished business. That they need to accept their separation and move on. Amicably, with honour and dignity. For Rashid to give Dilshad her freedom. From the bond of a non existent marriage. From the false remnant of emotion that lingered because the bond was not officially broken. And hopefully, if anything positive were to emerge from all this, it would be acknowledgement for the SM inmates of their debt to Dilshad and their apology to her.
But divorce is a dirty word, right? Thats the message currently here. Rashid left his wife. Did not defend her even verbally when she was repeatedly taunted. Spoke generally ... Examples... Aap log kaala jaadu kaise maan sakte hain, aise sabke saamne kaisi baate kar sakte hain, not ... Jo hua hain hua hain, lekin aap log aainda Dilshad ke khilaf kuch bhi kahein, main use bardhasht nahi karunga. Nothing that was firm. Nothing that was unequivocal. Nothing that held a remote semblance to taking a stand. Not even yesterday. And Dilshad will experience that very soon. But not divorcing her is the saving grace? Proof of his undying love?
There is a very old movie called Out of Africa. Post their affair and breakup, karen von blixen, played by meryl streep, is pleading with the resident in kenya to let the kikuyu have their land. She goes down on her knees, inappropriately. Dennis finchhattan, played by Robert Redford, comes forward, and takes her arm amd escorts her out, saving her from ridicule and adding untold force and strength to her plea. His validation of her silences everyone. He does not get back with her then. She does not expect it. But he has honoured their relationship although it has ended.
Rashid never did that. Society gave Dilshad a bad name, because Rashid did not respect her. He could have been blackmailed by Razia to any extent, but she could not possibly have stopped him from treating Dilshad with honour, and defending her, if he had opened his mouth and made it clear, that ..look, you have me, but you cannot rub my wife's face in the dirt like that. I will not tolerate it.
Asad was desperate. He is scared as hell. He has run away, because he does not want to be there when his mother goes. He physically cannot take it. And he wants to let her muster up her strength to make her choice. He knows she will weaken if he were to be there. He knows she has made her choice. She told him so already. His bones have been broken several times already. They do not need to be rebroken!
Hatred is not as terrible an evil as we make it out to be. Very often it is the other face of love. Sometimes it is born out of ignorance. The real evil here is lies. Complicity. Entrapment. Ignorance. Cowardice. And all of that, the source of all of that, lies in SM.
Edited for afterthoughts:
Zoya. One word. Clueless.
Lovely, kind, endearing, good, tenderhearted, forgiving. But clueless.
Because truth is the biggest strength in this world. And when love is true, then it is the biggest strength. Love does not make lies true. Forgiveness does not either. Its the other way around. The truth will bring love and forgiveness into peoples lives. Atonement also lies in the truth.
