ASYA scene decoded

So,

I read a lot of posts mocking the ASYA scene today. Of course, each to his own. But this is my interpretation of the scene, which is not me just fangirling, but trying to make sense of it in my own way.

Asad wanted to see Zoya sleep. I think it is a beautiful wish. Not at all in the creepy Edward Cullen way, but a way more mature feeling. As a man, he simply wants to be able to provide a life for zoya where she can get a peaceful sleep at night. What is more important to any man? Just to be able to watch his family ( wife and kids) sleep ( metaphorically), so he knows that he is looking after all their needs well. It is a super Indian man thing, if I may say so. For most men, it is the most proud and content feeling.

Asad, still feels guilty about his treatment of Zoya in the past. He has seen her almost dying, almost forcefully get married to another guy, being beaten up by a man, heartbroken and depressed after Tanveer, and now in her earnest quest to find the man who abandoned her years ago. He simply feels her pain and understand how much she has gone through and wonders how is it possible for her to remain so happy and hopeful despite all the tragedies of her life. At this point, he simply wants to shield her from all the pain and sorrow in the world, and give her a life only full of happiness. This is the feeling behind his statement of watching her sleep. It is a metaphoric statement for "I want to give you a life of contentment, without any pain, where you can sleep at night with peace". And he wants to be able to be next to her and watch that, because it would give him a feeling of immense fulfillment and happiness, only to watch her be peacefully asleep, without a worry in the world.

If you see Asad's expressions, when he says, he wants to watch her sleep, they also highlight a subdued passion in that statement, which hints at the idea of being in the same bedroom, next to each other. Again, in this sense, "watching her sleep" is a metaphor for "being married, and sleeping next to her every night and waking up to her every morning". This is every guy's wish who loves any girl. So, it is not creepy, it is simply hinting at the amazing feeling of having her sleep in his bedroom, watching her face before he shuts his eyes for the night and waking up to that same face every morning. Isn't it a beautiful wish?

While Asad has more depth to make such metaphoric statements, Zoya is a more non-subtle character who says it like it is, no mincing words and no hiding bare facts. She decides to let him have his wish, not in the passionate way that he may have wanted ( her in his bedroom, his arms, and that close proximity of bodies) but, in the romantic way that he wanted, to be able to feel content that she is happy with him, without any worries and to watch her sleep without a crease on her forehead. And she in her own cute, and thoughtful way, grants him that happiness.

When he is reminiscing about their times together, it is another aspect of their relationship. He not only feels guilty for having hurt her in the past, but he is still not able to register how she can forgive him and how she can love him despite all that. He is still reeling under some kind of surprise as to hwo he got so lucky in life as to have her. Asad, has grown up through his childhood and teenage years, not enjoying the perks of that age, but as an almost adult with the sole responsibility to support his mom and sister. A life of anger, burning hatred inside, and horse blinders with the sole aim to make it big, make money and provide all that his father could not provide for his sister and mom. He probably has never looked at a girl in that way, nor had time to even delve into the usual hormonal feelings or romantic feelings for any girl. So, at a sudden point in life, he has found all the love that he has missed in his life, from this one girl. He is actually overwhelmed with the idea that from living such a hermit like life, he has found happiness in this girl who makes his world topsy turvy and in her own way, has put balm on his wounds of a lifetime. His shedding tears watching her sleep, is testimony to his inner guilt, and at the same time, an inner untold happiness of having found her. And finally, knowing that after all the pain, he has managed to make her happy enough that she sleeps in such a content manner.

I think it was truly beautiful and so well portrayed by KSG. From a glint of passion in his eyes when he talks about sharing the bedroom with her after marriage, to a romantic notion of knowing that she sleeps peacefully ( in his arms metaphor) and finally to being overwhelmed at his fate, at her and at the idea of having found the woman of his life and making her happy.

I read a lovely post by someone who mentioned how both Asad and Zoya have missed out on the usual teenage romance years, the usual first love phases and they are simply living those now. I think we should let them have this phase ( even if late in life) and enjoy it. :) everyone deserves a cheesy mushy romance once in their life! :)

Passion must soon follow though. I do hope to see Asad, finally getting over his guilt and overwhelming emotions and getting to the part where he takes charge. 😉

I meant no offence to anyone with a different opinion, but I just wanted to put my POV across :)

Your post is quite mature. I agree with you. Romance on a different level and by no means childish and teeny...its very mature and not about the moment but beyond that. i said before, he wanted to have a peace of mind that she has a peace of mind. In the past he has seen her have nightmares, always restless...he wanted to make sure she was happy and settled now. Not only in day but at night too.

in the past he only found out that she had a painful past when she woke them up with a screaming nightmare... Asad simply wanted to take her in a different/safer place in her life and to confirm that watching her sleep was proof of that.

I enjoyed it.

Hi :)

Thanks! you brought out an amazing point that I forgot. He knows about her nightmares and has seen her wake up in sweats before. That forms a major crux for him to know she is now at peace and is sleeping peacefully and if anything he will be right next to her to alleviate her fears.

Lovely point! thanks :)

Awe beautifully written😳 . You understood where asad was coming from when he made that wish. I couldn't agree with you more, you said everything I wanted to say beautifully. He has always been zoya's shield and protector and always wants to see her happy. He's never had the luxury of being content always had to worry about other things regarding his life after his Abu left them all. He had to forcefully grow up and become the man of the house. Since Zoya walk into his life, he realised what living is and after all the drama he wants to do just that with Zoya live a happy life that he missed out on. But sadly we know they have a long journey ahead of them full of hurdles but I'm sure they will make it through stronger

i really dnt understand why ppl ddnt like it..but everybdy can hv their opinions

literally i found the scene actually NECESSARY in the sense that..ive always wanted to see a scene where asad looks uptowards heaven...or verbally even thanks god and asks him HOW OR WHY he sent zoya into his life...kinda like he still cant believe it

and i felt like thts EXACTLY wht the purpose of the scene was...asad lived a life full of PAIN ANGER and simply lived for others...he had no expectations or wishes frm life he was DEAD..and out of the blue god sent smthing SOOO magical into his world which literally flipped his world over and has made him so alive tht he probably eagerly goes to bed just to see wht tommorow will bring..the laughs the happiness...the games him and zoya wud play with each other...

sooo asad watching zoya sleeping is just that...i ask u...if u lived a nightmare which is asads life and out of nowhere tht nightmare turned into a fairytale dream like it did when zoya came into his life and then suddenly u were threatened with the dream being snatched away and ur life going back to tht nightmare wud u NOT react like asad does

if u lost smbdy u LUVD like asad lost zoya due to tanveer...and then got thm back i assure u ud probably stare at them like they were a dream as well and if u blinked ur eyes theyd disappear...

it happens in EVERYDAY life...ppl cm out of hospitals...kids who return home after being kidnapped...their families go through stuff like this...infact CREEPIER stuff...ppl fall sick bcuz of acts like this...where they simply ccant BELIEVE IT...and they are actually more traumatized once the nightmare is over then while living it...bcuz they just cant BELIEVE IT...

i found this scene really NECESSARY and beautiful...maybe cvs did put it in for sm total opposite reason...but im happy cuz i wished for smthing like this where asad wud thank god...and still not be able to believe it...bcuz it wud be true to his character and his traumatizing life and i am super happy with the justice done to it...

and for ppl who think this is OTT and CHEESY..trust me u hvnt seen OTT and cheesy when it comes to INDIAN shows...😆

P.S no i am NOT under 10 thus fangirling...i am ABOVE 20.

Lovely post.

I agree with you 100%.

And, after putting up with weeks of angst and crying, I'm still loving this phase of AsYa's relationship.

you said it beautifully! I agree with each word. I think Asad still finds Zoya and him as a surreal dream. He wants to hold it, cherish it and make sure that this dream never fades.

Zoya was literally buried alive and came back from dead. He almost lost her during the Tanveer fiasco and one could see how broken he was during the Ajmer episodes. He has saved her in the nick of time saving her from a marriage to a moron. So basically, he has found Zoya after almost losing her, each time.

This time too, he simply wants to make sure, that this time, she is his, for life and he is not going to lose her to anything or anyone.

These scenes were so required to make a statement about their love. Now, they truly have come out of the box ( as Karan said in an interview) and this will pave the way for situations in which they are faced opposite each other ( Najma marriage, siddiqui father revelation, ayaan-asad).

They are showing step 2 to their relationship - Mature acceptance of their love and a wish to be married to each other and keep each other happy forever.

Step 1 - was simply trying to gauge their feelings for each other, a subdued passion in their meetings, a typical phase where you are wondering why you like someone, and whether they like you.

Step 3- will be coming out of misunderstandings and problems based on their strong love for each other.

They can't keep locking eyes in every episode. Their love also has to move forward, which is why this scene, like you beautifully said, was necessary in the present scheme of things! :)
