Chapter 3

Next morning Asad gets up before Zoya and gets dressed in a white pajama. When he is adjusting his dress, bathroom door clicks open and he looks up. His eyes remain fixed at the most beautiful lady standing before him, adjusting her dupatta totally oblivious to his stare. Zoya is dressed in a white salwar. Her hair is untied as usual and there is no make-up or jewellery. Still there is a glow on her face enhancing her beauty and innocence. As she steps forward, Asad too moves towards her and as a result, both collide head-on and end up falling on the bed with Asad on top of Zoya. Their eyes meet and they forget the world around them. Asad's hand moves on its own accord to tuck a stripe of hair behind her ear. As his fingers move towards her lips on their own accord, both get back to their senses and stand up abruptly. There is thick tension in the air. After a minute of killing silence, Zoya can't take it anymore.

Zoya: Umm…Mr. Khan are you ready?

Asad: Jee. Chaliye.

Zoya: Yup.

They walk to the dargah. On the way, Zoya keeps talking animatedly about how she has always wanted to visit the place and Asad tries his best to listen patiently. Of course, they have their normal fights.

At the Dargah

Asad buys chadaar.

Zoya: What is this?

Asad: Chadaar.

Zoya: I know ki yeh chadaar hai. I meant aap chadaar kiske liye chaadhaenge?

Asad: Aapke liye!

Zoya(eyes wide as saucers): Impossible! Mr. Khan, you are joking? With me? Ina kaise badal gaye aap? Pyaar ho gaya kya?

She smiles mischieviously. But as Asad stares at her,

Zoya: No no Mr. Khan plz gussa mat hoyiye! Main toh bus majak kar rahi thi..I know ki aapko kabhi pyaar ho hi nahin sakta!( Asad just stares at her. Zoya stammers) Andarr chalte hain, haan?

They both go inside. Suddenly Asad spots Aisha Bi beside him and he smiles at her as she smiles at them.Asad greets her. On getting no response from Zoya,

Asad(whispers): Ms. Farooqui! What is this? Aap inko salam kyun nahin karr rahi hain?

Zoya: Aap inhe jaante hain?

Asad(remembers that Zoya has lost her memory and sighs): Ms. Farooqui, yeh Aisha Bi hain, humare jasn-e-saugat parr aayi thin. Wish her.

Zoya: Oh! Salam Aisha bi! Kaise hain aap?

Aisha Bi: salam! Hum toh humesha thik hote hain, tum dono kaise ho?

Zoya: Hum bilkul thik hain!

Asad nods. Aisha Bi signals both of them to sit down. Both sit before her. She puts her hands on their heads as a sign of blessing.

Aisha bi: Allah tum dono ki Jodi humesha banaye rakhe! Sada khush raho.

Zoya stares back and forth b/w Asad and Aisha bi highly confused as Asad looks away.

Zoya: Woh actually.. aapko galatf

Aisha Bi( to zoya): Beta, aab tumhare muhabatt ko bachane ki zimmedari tumhari hai!( She binds a taveez around her arm) Allah tumhare saath hai! Ise mat nikalna.

As Aisha Bi kisses Zoya on her forhead, Zoya closes her eyes. Zoya feels full of energy. A myriad of expressions come and go in her face in a few seconds.At last, she smiles wide and opens her eyes slowly.

Zoya: Shukriya.

Aisha Bi smiles and leaves. Finding Asad staring at her confused, Zoya speaks up.

Zoya: Mr. Khan who kya kah rahi thin? Pyaar…muhabatt..zimmedari..I didn't get it!

Asad: Who..woh.. actually….woh..

Zoya: Ek minute! Yeh aap humesha bheegi billi ke tarah kyun behave kar rahe hain? Who Shamsher Khan kahan hai? Use baharr nikaliye Mr. Khan, mujhe uski adatt ho gayi hai.(makes a puppy face) Seriously, I miss it sooo much…..

Asad( rubs his temples): Ms. Farooqui! You are impossible!

Zoya: Okay. Mr. Akdu is back!!!

Asad: Aab agar aapki faltoo batein khatam ho gayi ho toh andarr chalein?

Zoya(shocked): Aaan?

Asad: ANDARR CHALIYE!

Both go inside and pray.

Asad: Mujhe meri Zoya wapaas dila di, uske liye shukriya. LEKIN USE KUCHH YAAD NAHIN! Uske liye shukriya aada karoon ya naraajgi jataun, mujhe nahin pata! Bas Zoya ko humesha isi tarah khush rakhna…Jo gum dene hain, mujhe de dena.

Zoya: Mera jo maksad use, who mere life ki sabse badi maksad hai! Ush maksad ko poora karne mein mera saath dena, mujhe himatt dena! I know, yeh bilkul bi asaan nahin hai, but main haar nahin manungi!And please, mujhse kuch aisa mat karwaana jishse mere chahne-waale hurt hon!

Both get up and complete the other formalities.( Sorry, I'm not acquainted with Islamic culture)

Way back to hotel:

Zoya: Mr. Khan, mujhe bhuk lagi hai!

Asad: Nothing surprising! Pahle hotel pahunch jaate..

Zoya: No! mujhe aabhi pizza khani hai!

Asad: Doctor ne maana kiya hai unhealthy cheezein khane se!aap..

Zoya: But pizza unheal..

Asad: MS. FAROOQUI! Maine keh diya ki aaj aap pizza nahin khaengi! So that's final. No more arguments!

Zoya( frist in shock, then smiles and crosses her arms): Fine! But meri bi ek shart hai!

Asad(pinches his nose): Not again!

Zoya: Boliye, maanenege meri shart?

Asad: Shart kya hai?

Zoya: Shart yeh hai ki aapko aabhi mujhe wahaan se ice-cream khilani hogi!!!

Asad: What? Aapne who jagah dekhi? Itni gandagi hai…aap hotel chaliye! Wahaan aapk.

Zoya: NO way! Mujhe wohin se ice-cream khani hai! Aapko pata hai, wahaan parr Ajmer ki best ice-cream milti hai,maine net pe search kiya tha! Trust me. Chaliy, ice-cream lekar aayiye warna main pizza khaungi.

Asad glares at her for a long time, hoping she would change her mind. But seeing no change in her expression, he gives in and gets a chocolate_flavoured ice-cream for her. On Zoya's insistence, he too took a bite from that.

Hotel-night

Zoya is sleeping on bed,and Asad on couch. The lights are off

Zoya: Mr. Khan?

Asad:Jee?

Zoya: Phoophi, Appi and Nazma mujhse bahut naraaj homge na?

Asad: Naraaj the, but aapko dekhkar bhul jaenge. They want you back.

Zoya: Actually mera koi iraada nahin tha kisi ko hurt karne ka, but main kya karti? Main abhi nikah nahin karr sakti! Mujhe kuch issues cle..

Asad: Ms. Farooqui, aap..

Zoya: Let me complete Mr. Khan! Mujhe India mein aapne abb..i mean ek jaroori kaam karna hai, and ushse pahle main nikah nahin kar sakti. Mr. Khan, appi mujhe yahaan akele nahin rahne degi. So I have to stay at your house till my work gets over. Please let me stay..

Asad:Ms.

Zoya: I promise, main ache se pesh aaungi, bilkul gandagi nahin phelaungi, aapke saare rules follow karungi, koi mauka hi nahin dungi aapko complain karne…

Asad: Ms. Farooqui! Aap jitna din chahein ruk sakti hain! Permission maangne ki koi jaruratt nahin hai aaapko!

Zoya(stands up on the bed excitedly): Really? Thank you so much Mr. Khan! You're the best!!!!

Asad: Ms. Farooqui! Niche utariye and so jayiye!!!!

Zoya shakes her head and lays down.

Asad(murmurs to himself): Mera bus chalet oh tumhe aapne najroon se dorr kabhi nahin jaane doonga zoya!

Zoya: Aapne kuch kaha?

Asad: Nahin toh!

Zoya(murmurs): Jhoote kahin ke!

Asad:Aapne kuch kaha?

Zoya: Nahin! Bilkul nahin! Good night.

Asad:Good night.

After an hour, Asad gets up and stands by her bed-side, gazing lovingly at her sleeping form.

Asad(thinks): Aaj ki din mere zindegi ki sabse achhi din hai! Aaj Zoya ke saath bitaya hua eke k pal mujhe zindegi bhar yaad rahega. Aab toh inhi yadoon ke sahare poori zindegi bitani hai! Kal hum ghar jaa rahe hain. Kal sab kuch khatam ho jaega. Zoya par koi haq nahin hoga mera…everything will be over! Kaas yeh raat khatam na ho, yeh pal yahin ruk jae!

He bends down and hols her hands. Tears roll down his eyes and fall on their interwined hands.

Asad: I love you Zoya! I know I don't deserve you..You deserve the best Zoya! Lekin tumhare wager main ek jinda laas hoon…Maine sirf tumse muhabatt ki hai, sirf tumse! kaas main waqt main wapaas jaa sakta, toh sab kuch badal diya hota!!

His sobs subside after a few minutes. He gets up slowly, arranges her hair, kisses on her forehead and covers her with blanket. After giving her one last look, he resigns to his couch.

Next morning:

Both Asad and Zoya get up around the same time.

Zoya(beams): Good morning Mr. Khan!

Asad: Ms. Farooqui! Moonh dhone se pahle baat nahin karte!

Zoya: Allah miyaan, what's wrong with you? Uthte hi shuroo ho gaye aap? And by the way, aabhi kisne baat ki?

Asad: Who main aapko bata raha tha ki.

Zoya:Rahne dijiye! Aap kabhi nah..

Asad: Mujhe pahle fresh hona hai, phir aap jhagda kijiyega!

Asad goes to the bathroom and Zoya shakes her head. When Asad comes out, he sighs on seeing Zoya goobling up a pizza.

Asad: Ms. Farooqui! Dhire dhire khaiye! Koi aapka pizza kha nahin jaega, aur na hi aapko koi train pakadni hai!

Zoya(with food in her mouth): Mr. Kha..

Asad: Khane waqt baat karna bad maners hota hai!

Zoya rolls her eyes.

Way Back Home:

Zoya notices that Asad is quite tensed.

Zoya: Mr., Khan, aap itne tensed kyun hain? Galti meri hai, tension mujhe leni chahiye! See main kitni tension-free hoon? Aab galti toh ho gayi, tension lene se kya phayda? Live in the moment Mr. Khan, kyun ki yeh pal dubaara nahin aaenge…Aage jo hoga dekha jaega! Hum future ke bare mein sochkr aapni present ko kyun spoil karein, right? (Asad smiles at her) Aapko pata hai, Ny mein…

She tells him about her time in NY. Asad tells her about his interest in architecture. This way neither realise when they reach home.

Khan Mansion:

Asad rings the bell. Nazma opens the door and turns away sadly on seeing Asad. But then she catches a glimpse of Zoya through a corner of her eye and gasps.

Nazma:Zoya??

Dilshad comes running and she too gasps. All the three ladies have tears in their eyes as they hug. Just then Zeenat calls on skype. She also gets very happy on seeing Zoya. All shower questions on her together.

Nazma: kahaan thi tum?

Dilshad: aapne phoophi k a ek baar bi khayal nahin aaya tumhe?

Zeenat: Mujhe bi nahin bataya!

Zoya: Let me explain. I know mujhse galti hui hai, and I'm really sorry for that. But mere paas bi toh bhaagne ki wajah thin na!( Others look down) Appi, aap jaanti hain main nikah ke liye ready nahin hoon, still aapne Mr. Khan se mera nikah fix kiya! Toh main kya karti?

Zeenat, Dilshad and Nazma are shocked.

Dilshad: Zoya, tum kya kah rahi ho?

Asad: Ms. Farooqui aap andarr jayiye! I'll tell them

Zoya: But Mr. Kha..

Asad: Zoya, please let me handle this! Give me 10 minutes!

Zoya nods and leaves to her room. Asad explains everything to them.

After 10 minutes:

Zoya comes out of her room. At the same time, Tanveer reaches down the stairs.

Zoya: Mr. Kha..

She stos on seeing Tanveer. Tanveer is shocked out of her wits on seeing Zoya. Colour drains out of her face as she sees Zoya staring at her like no tomorrow and approaching her slowly. Asad and others get tensed on seeing Zoya clutching her head as if trying to remember something while moving towards Tanveer. Asad, Dilshad and Nazma go and stand beside Zoya as she stops before tanveer. After few minutes of deadly silence,

Zoya: Mr. Khan, yeh ladki…ishe…yeh…(everyones's breathe gets struck in their throat seeing Zoya's expressions and hearing her words)
