Part 1
oOo
After a really awkward car ride we finally reached the office. I checked my watch and I wanted to do a small jig, we had reached on time, thanks to the speedy driving of my boss. Mr Khan, my boss was walking right beside me when he could've just went ahead. I can't even ask him to go. He is my boss after all plus he gave me ride. I decided to ignore him and instead walked towards the reception area.
"Zoya?" he called.
"What?" I snapped, "I mean, yes!"
"The elevator's this way."
I resisted the overpowering urge to roll my eyes heavenwards. Of course I knew the way to the elevators I've been working here for over a year.
"Actually I have some work in the reception."
"What work?"
Oh why does he want to play 21 questions today?
"Umm, I have to dosomestuff." I'm not making sense to even myself.
"You forgot I had called a meeting of all journalists today in the conference room? You being one of them have to be present there."
Why can't he just let me go? Damn that guy! I won't be able to see him because of my stupid boss.
"O-Ok!"
I walked alongside him towards the elevator, cursing him under my breath. There was long queue for the lift.
"Zoya why don't you come with me in this lift?" he offered. I stared at him wide-eyed.
"But that lift.."
"Is only for the CEO I know but I'm the boss right. I can take anyone with me." He smiled.
Before I could muster up a reply for that, a girl around 20 years old hopped in front of me,
"That sexy piece of meat wants to take you for a ride in his, well, umm, elevator and all you are gonna do is gawk?" she kept her hands on her hips and tapped her shoes.
"Now who the hell are you?" I asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Excuse me!" Asad said. He looked at me in shock. It was then I realized that the girl was yet another spirit. Damn my stupid life.
"N-N-No, I was not talking to you. I was thinking about something else."
"Oook." He said the word slowly trying to grasp what I said.
"So do you or do you not?" he pointed towards the elevator. The girl nodded at me in affirmative.
"Fine!"
The girl squealed and jumped in ecstasy as if she had just won a billion dollar lottery. Honestly I can never understand the way their minds work. I went inside the elevator and so did she. I gave her an incredulous look to which she simply shrugged and continued drooling over my boss.
"He's hot!" she giggled. I preferred to remain mum.
"Don't you think that?" she nudged my shoulder and I did what I usually do around ghosts, Act like you don't know anything.
On getting no response from me she walked in front of him and placed her hands on his biceps.
"Sweet mother of God! These ain't shoulder pads." She shrieked.
"What the hell!" I yelled at her but shut up when Asad turned to stare at me.
"What?"
"No.ummwhoactually.I just remembered that I forgot my phone at home." I lied.
"It's in your hand Zoya." He pointed at my right hand. I wanted to slap myself for coming up with such a stupid excuse.
"Oh, I forgot!" I looked down embarrassed. God! He must think I'm mad or something.
The elevator door opened and I rushed out without glancing back.
"Zoya."
Please don't fire me, please don't fire me! I prayed to almighty.
"In case you don't remember the meeting is today at 10."
I heaved a sigh of relief. "Thanks for the reminder." I smiled at him.
"So I guess I'll see you later, in the conference room."
I nodded and waited for him to walk away. Geez! My boss sometimes gives me creeps.
"He's hot!" the girl came in front of me with a poof scaring the shit outta me.
"You're still here?" I asked while walking towards my cabin.
"Yep!" she said, popping the 'p'.
"Why?" I groaned.
"To irritate the crap out of you." She flopped down on the chair and twirled the paper-weight.
"Well then congratulations, you are succeeding. Now get lost and let me do my job." I shoo-ed her away.
"What do you do?" she took a look around my cabin. I wore my glasses and switched on my laptop.
"I'm a journalist and I write articles."
"For whom?"
"For my pet dog." I deadpanned.
"Aww you have a pet dog, Zoya?"
I turned my attention back to her.
"How'd you know my name?"
"I know everything." She mimicked one of those fortune tellers with that magic crystal ball.
Ignore them and they'll go away. I recited this mantra in my head and concentrated on the article that is due tomorrow.
"God you are so boring. Aren't you even interested in knowing my name? What am I doing here? Why am I still here and not in heaven or hell? How did I die? Nothing at all?" she used excessive hand gestures to get my attention.
"Nope! Now will you please leave?" I begged.
"I can't!" she looked down.
"Why?"
"Because I've been told that I can't go anywhere until I help you with your problem. So basically I'm stuck with a boring, uptight woman who can't talk to men without stuttering and embarrassing herself." She yelled.
"Whoa calm down will ya! First I don't need your help. Second I'm not uptight and neither am I boring I just don't talk to ghosts!"
"Ok first don't call us ghosts it's offending and second you do need my help. You need to learn how to talk to men, how to dress, how to present yourself, how to wear makeup and how to make heads turn in your direction." She said in one breath.
"Geez you need to learn a lot."
"I don't need to learn anything, especially from you. You can't go back to wherever you belong is none of my concern, now will you please leave I'm late for the meeting." I stood up and started walking out of the room.
"Where am I supposed to pass time?" she asked.
"There's a mall nearby. Go window-shop." I waved her off and made my way towards the conference room.
