Chapter Two
Zoya breathed heavily as she stood outside her mamujaan€™s house and prayed for strength. The morning encounter with her mumaani was a violent one. She placed her hands over her hair, caressing it like her mother used to before braiding it. She made sure there was not a single strand of hair out of place; something she had to be extra careful about. She placed her handbag into a box just outside the house and covered it. She closed her eyes as she stepped into the house and slowly walked into the kitchen. Her eyes peeked at the huge walls that had caged her, 18 years had fallen short for her to know them, accept them. In her eyes, they were unknown as the people living in the bricked house, far from being a home. A house is a home where love exists; such things do not exist in between these four walls.
Zoya sat in the huge kitchen that had forced her to grow up way before nature€™s orders. A place she reluctantly calls her second home because this is where she used to spend all her time; studying and piecing herself together. She wiped her tears with the back of her hands and placed the onions in a bowl. She jumped up as she heard low whistles and rushed towards the cooker. She took the curries off the cooker and put them aside as she took out white bowls. She prepared the dining table making sure everything was in order before heading upstairs. She watched as her mumaani brushed her daughter€™s hair and adorned her with jewellery as the mother-daughter stood in a picture perfect position in front of the mirror. Zoya smiled to herself as she changed the bed covers and tidied each bedroom. She stopped as she came towards the second corridor; she longingly stared at the closed doors; each holding its own set of secrets. She stepped towards one of her favourite rooms, her heart racing with each approaching step. She put her hand out towards the door handle,
€˜Zoya?€™ Razia called out, Zoya€™s hand found themselves flying back towards her body and gluing themselves there as she spun on her feet. She gulped as she stared at the floor hearing the footsteps get closer towards her. She looked up from the corner of her eyes to find Razia glaring at her,
€˜Woh dekhne aya tha ki agar kuch safai-€™ Zoya fumbled with her words; she wasn€™t this scared standing in front of her class.
€˜Acha?€™Replied Razia to which Zoya nodded slightly before putting her hands up defensively as they shook endlessly, she peered through the gaps between her arms before she slowly put them down, Razia brushed her shoulders on the pretence of wiping something off, €˜Kyunki tum jaante ho kya hoga agar kuch aur kar rahe the€€™ She smiled widely before slowly walking off. Zoya longingly stared towards the door as she caressed her arm finally deciding to leave.
€˜Maine sab kuch kar diya, khana laga diya hai aur kal ke guests ke liye bhi intezaam kar diya€™ Zoya spoke softly, €˜Mujhe kal school jaldi jaana hai toh main ab ja raha hoon€™
€˜Kya tumne faisla kar diya?€™ Razia called out from behind, Zoya stopped short hearing those words,
€˜Maine koi faisla nahin liya, teen saal pehle jo jawaab tha uss€ uss paar mein kayaam hoon€™ Zoya replied.
€˜Kya tum€€™ She shouted before calming herself down, €˜woh-€™
€˜Rehne do Razia€™ Interrupted Siddique, €˜Humne uss paar joh ehsaan kiya hai woh baat yeh kaabi nahi bulegi€€™ Zoya closed her eyes shut as she pressed out the fresh set of tears brimming in her eyes, €˜Tum jao abhi€€™ Zoya nodded before walking off.
€˜Ya Allah, Yeh kaisa kashmakash hai? What do I do now?€™ Zoya breathed out as she walked towards her cottage which was once a servant€™s quarter.
€˜Tum kitna bhi door na jao, woh ayegi beta€€™She laughed as she placed her hands over his eyes, the motherly touch made him feel content as he drifted off to sleep.
Asad squirmed on his chair as he heard gunshots before jumping upright onto his feet defensively. His eyes wide with fear as he spun on his feet trying to familiarise himself with the scenery around him.
€˜Kya hua bhai, aap toh bahar so gaye. Aap teek toh ho na?€™ Asked Ayaan remaining a metre away from Asad just in case he punched the living daylights out of him. Asad brushed his hair back as he faced the rising sun taking in the warmth of its beauty. He stretched his arms out pretending to exercise as he composed himself.
€˜Kuch nahin, woh room ki safai ho gayi kya?€™ He asked whilst removing his vest and rubbing it against his body wiping away the sweat glistening against every part of his body.
€˜Jee bhai, we€™ve burnt everything€™ Ayaan said sounding confused,
€˜Good€™ Asad sensed the silent questions, €˜get the cars ready€™ He ordered before walking inside for a cold shower.
€˜Naina, wahan jao€™ She pointed to her students as the girls dispersed instead of walking in a straight line.
Zoya smiled as she arrived at her favourite place, she looked around at the comforting scenery listening to the crashing water against the waiting grey rocks. She heard the bird chirping as the wind blew against the bushes making soothing noises. She dropped her bag onto the soft grass as she put her arms out,
€˜Tum sab jaante ho ab kya karna hai€™ She giggled as she heard them drop their anklets and get into their positions, €˜Ready?€™ She asked to which they made humming noises before giggling.
€˜Breathe in€ Breathe out!€™ She laughed not being able to stay serious. She opened her eyes and spun on her feet, €˜Come on, ghungroo pehen lo€™ She clapped her hands to speed them up. She watched happily as they all ran in different directions before settling on a spot, €˜Ready?€™ She pressed her eyes at them,
€˜Haan didi!€™ They all chirped.
€˜Okay then, aaj hum kuch aur try karenge. We will focus on expressions but before that we will do some eye work€™ She spoke to a bunch of confused girls.
€˜Huh?€™
€˜Acha, mein explain karta hoon€€™ She took her duppata and wrapped it around her face only leaving the eyes naked. She wore her ghungroo and tapped her feet, €˜Okaay, focus€€™ She stepped forward, €˜First step, mere aankhon ke taraf dekho€€™ She moved backwards as she demonstrated a few more steps.
€˜You got it?€™ She asked, to which they nodded, €˜Okay we€™ll practice to last week€™s steps€ come on€™ She clapped, €˜Dhin Dhin Dhin Ta, Tamanna look this way! Again, no no muro uss taraf€ Tha Tha, muro, Dhin Tha Dhin Tha and now turn again€™ She swerved her hands in all directions as she taught them.
€˜Didi!!€™ She heard someone call her; she looked towards her right to see the peon standing on a rock. She shook her hand to ask him what was wrong, €˜Bachon ko chutti de do, aaj koi class nahi hoga€€™
€˜Kyun?€™ She made a baby face,
€˜Memsaab ne kaha ki sab bachon ko ghar bej do. Aaj meeting bhi bulaya hai, teen ghanta mein€™ He told her. Zoya puffed as she stared at her watch; 8 a.m. The day had only begun with her favourite class, she didn€™t want to let it go, €˜Hello jee, sun rahe ho na? DIDI?!€™ He shouted,
€˜Haan haan, Naina please drop them off€€™ She asked Naina,
€˜Are you not coming?€™
€˜Baad mein€™ Zoya replied, €˜I think I€™ll just practice a bit more€ Thank you€™ She hugged Naina before waving at the children.
€˜Oi tera baggage hatai gha ya mein aoon hata ne ke liye?€™ Ayaan threatened with the gun,
€˜Saab, maaf kar dijye€ Kya karoon iss waqt haar din yeh karta hoon€™ He replied as he shooed the sheeps. Seeing the gun, the farmer picked the lamb up and started hitting the herd so that they would move faster. After what seemed like hours, the cars were moving again.
€˜Jagah acha hain€™ Spoke Asad in deep thought, €˜Humein bhi yahan settle ho na chahiye€€™ He suggested as he stared out of the window.
€˜Haan bhai, bohot sun saan hai yahan. Shaantiii-AILAAA!€™ Ayaan braked the car as hard as he could making Asad jump forward in his seat, €˜What the hell was that?€™ Ayaan stared with wide eyes.
€˜AYAAAN?!!€™
€˜Bhai, dekha kasam se€ Koi superman ki tarah ghari ki upar flying flying karke girah€™ Ayaan pointed, €˜Mere ghari teek hai na€™ He jumped out of the jeep; Asad rolled his eyes. He too got out taking his shades off to have a good look. He stared at Ayaan wanting to know what all the commotion was about. He walked towards the front of the jeep to find an injured male, he looked up to see a group of men thrashing the shops and beating people up.
€˜Shaanti?€™ Asad smirked, Ayaan chuckled at his sarcastic tone, €˜Move it!€™ Asad pointed towards the injured body before walking back.
€˜Tu kaha ja raha hai?€™ A bald man jumped in front of Asad waving a knife in front of him.
€˜Filhaal jeep ke aandar€™ He nodded his head,
€˜EYY TUUU€™ Ayaan swore from the other side only to be stopped by Asad€™s raised hand,
€˜Paise nikal€ Jaldi jaldi€™ The bald man ordered, Asad placed his hands inside his pockets, the man waited for him to bring his hands back out. He stared at Asad€™s calm smirking face,
€˜Nahi nikala toh?€™ Asad asked to which Ayaan burst out laughing.
€˜Tu nahin jaanta mein kon hoon?€™ He said angrily waving the knife faster, Asad creased his forehead in confusion before shaking his head. He looked at Ayaan and he also shook his head, €˜Mein don hoon iss ailekha ka!€™ He pointed at himself proudly, €˜Nikal-€™
€˜Tsch!€™ Asad sounded irritated as he gripped his wrist, €˜Choona maath€™ Asad twisted his hand inwards, the man fell on his knees grunting loudly, €˜Don ho tum mere jhoote ki€™ Asad twisted his hand the other way to which the man fell side wards on to the ground. Asad kicked his head making the bald man squeal in pain. He fixed his shirt before putting his shades back on, €˜Mood kharab kar diya€™ He was about to enter the jeep only to jump back as the bullet speeded past him and hit the door, he tilted his head before shaking his head. He spun on his feet as he removed the gun and shot at his shooter.
He ran around the jeep to the other side as he continuously shot at different directions.
€˜Bhai peeche se€™ Ayaan yelled as he pulled Asad down shooting at the person behind him, the receiving bullet scraped past his arm. Asad shot a glare at the shooter before watching him run away,
€˜Tum teek ho?€™ Asad asked holding onto Ayaan€™s wounds,
€˜First class bhai€™ He replied picking Asad€™s gun up and passing it back to him. They both looked up as they watched the rest of the cars arrive, €˜Army€™ Ayaan joked watching the gang rush out of the cars and start shooting. What seemed like a small tiff between shop keepers and wannabe goons in a small village market turned into a battle ground for two groups of wild gangsters.
€˜Ahad! Yahan aao€™ Asad called out before running off; he wouldn€™t spare him. No one attacks Asad behind his back and gets away with it. He stopped as he came a bit away from the little market and searched for the attacker. He panted as he looked around him; he followed the footprints on the ground towards the river. His eyes searched once again; there were no signs of him. He kicked the tree in front of him in frustration; he turned around to go only to stop on his feet. He closed his eyes as he listened carefully; he heard jingly noises. He turned around searching for the owner of those melodious noises, he moved forward. He was enchanted by the noises as he aimlessly walked forward not knowing where he was going. He ran forward, spinning on his feet as he restlessly searched not knowing what exactly he was looking for; but he needed to find it. He stretched forward as he caught glimpses of something moving behind the tree, he treaded forward slowly before finally coming to a stop with his eyes wide open.
There a few metres away stood a girl in a long green flowing anarkali, she had his back towards him. He tilted his head as he watched her tap her right foot making the ghungroo attached to her feet jingle crazily; each time making her giggle. She put her hands out by her side before spinning on her feet, the world around him slowed down. His heart anxiously waited to catch a glimpse of her face; he stared as she turned revealing her half covered face with her eyes closed and her hair dancing behind her in frenzy as the wind danced with her. The sight in front of him was nothing less than a dream; her swaying dress spinning along with her as the world fought to keep up with her. He closed his eyes as the wind caressed his face; a small smile adorned his face. He opened them once again only this time his heart thudded loudly at the sight of her, the trees swayed side to side crazily as the waters crashed against the rocks much faster than before. The noises from her anklets mixed with the noises of nature as they both played side by side making him more anxious than before. He hushed the noises around him as he slowly stepped towards her, his heart beating faster than ever before finally slowing down as he felt another heart join his in a race. He put his hand out towards her only to have her come to a halt. He silently watched as she tried catching her breath, he could hear her gasping for air as her shortened breaths made her light headed. She slowly opened her eyes to meet his gazing ones; he felt himself being almost drowned into them before seeing them grow wide in fear. He heard her gasp as she stumbled back a few steps only to lose her balance and fall backwards, he jumped forward and grabbed her. He held her delicate hands with his masculine ones as she swung below him, he was irritated for a moment seeing the fear in her eyes before noticing her gaze on something else; they seemed so cold. He felt her hand shiver; he pulled her hands making her jump up and crash against his hard body, his hand slid down to her waist as he turned with her. He swung his right hand and clicked the gun shooting aimlessly as he fell backwards onto the grass. She shrieked loudly hearing the gunshots followed by a loud thud, her eyes instantly closed shut as she found herself falling forward. She clutched onto his shirt and held him tight whilst she waited for movement. She opened her eyes slowly to find another set of eyes staring back at her.
