Part 2:
ZOYAAAH...Thankfully, only his vocal cords seemed to be paralysed.
There were no signs of any other activity as he rushed in through the gate. Surely, if there were people around who had been using this as a haven, there must be some means of conveyance or litter or the wild grass looking trampled on. There was none of that. The place looked untouched as if Zoya must have been the first person to walk in, in the three years past. It was puzzling. But he could smell danger and that made him run as fast as his legs could carry him.
And he saw someone he did not expect there. He had caught a glimpse of Tanveer. And it had really thrown him off his track.
What was she doing here, so far away from home? When there was a threat to her life, supposedly? Was she in danger? Was she the danger, like Zoya had suggested? Wasn't there something fishy here? WHERE WAS ZOYA??? He could sort out the rest later.
"Jaaammmyyy..." The vermin had shouted out for him. All of a sudden, she had fallen to the ground, appeared to be in pain, and she was pleading for help.
"Tannu, where is Zoya?",he had asked her point blank. He had no patience for her blabbering right now. "WHERE IS ZOYA?"
"Zo...yaaa? Jammy, Zoya yahan kyun hogi? Woh toh yahaan aayi hi nahi...kyun aayegi woh yahaan?"
Alright! This was clearly getting nowhere. He moved towards the direction of the smoke, turning a deaf ear to Jammies in various tones of whines.
"ZOYAAAHHH..." Ayan's scream reached his ears just as he found him near the burning staircase. Zoya stood transfixed near the landing, her head a bleeding mess, simply staring at the fire. There was no way Ayan could reach her through the stairs and he was pleading with her to jump down, where he would catch her. Zoya seemed oblivious to everything but the fire.
"Zoya, JUMP!", Asad called out.
"Jump, Zoya", Asad pleaded. The flames were just reaching up to the landing, she was not in danger from the fire, if only she would jump. Or even move up the staircase, to where it was safer. But she seemed to be in a trance, Did she not have the simple logic to run away from fire? And how did she get that bloody wound?
"ZOYAAAHH!" Zoya jerked out of her trance, looked up, took a faltering step back towards the railing and simply fell down.
Asad caught her like a feather that had fallen down from heaven. In his arms lay an angel who had been wounded fatally, he realised, as her blood started soaking his shirt sleeve.
It did not take him a second to register that she had bled in to shock from the terrible wound on her head.
Asad ran like a mad man, with tears streaming down his cheeks. He sat her on the front seat beside him, resting her head on his shoulder, holding her with his arm while he tore down the lanes, driving at an insane speed. Somehow, he had the presence of mind to call an Ambulance from the Specialist's Hospital which met him half way through. His car was abandoned, Zoya was transferred and the medic had started her resuscitation then and there.
"Shit! That is one hell of a bloody wound. What has she been through?" The medic asked him as he made a quick assessment of her wounds and started for her vitals. The nurse was already starting a drip.
"How is she?", he prayed for a positive response.
No reply. Just a slight nod of his head.
"Here!" He applied a gigantic gauze pad on to her wound, "Please hold this tight so we can prevent any more bleeding"..."If there is a drop more left to bleed..." he muttered worriedly under his breath. Asad felt the strength drain out of his body, as his worst fears were confirmed. He held on with trembling hands as Zoya's head was wrapped around in a bandage.
"Whats her group?"
"Huh?"
"Her Blood Group?"
Asad gave a blank stare.
" We could save some time, if we knew."
Aapi must know. He dialled her.
"Aapi, what is Zoya's blood group?", he asked in the calmest voice possible.
Silence from the other end. She knew.
"B positive."
" Be positive?" It sounded like a mantra to calm his nerves, then he realised it was her group as the medic started scribbling it in her record.
He waited for her to grill him. Silence prevailed for half a minute.
"Asad..."
"...Jee ..."
"How bad is she?"
He looked towards Zoya whose face looked as white as a sheet under the oxygen mask. He took a deep breath, but words refused to come out. In the background, the medic was reporting to his seniors back at the hospital.
"Where are you taking her?"
"Specialists. Ammi knows the place." He managed to speak in a broken voice.
