PART - 4
"Geet is . . ." Maan started off with a smile.
And at that opportune moment, Asad's intercom buzzed.
"The chardonnay is ready, Sir!" He heard his employee say in a nervous tone.
Holding the button down, Asad said curtly, "Thanks!"
He looked up to see Maan glaring at him. He had forgotten that he had interrupted Maan in the middle of his speech. He looked sheepishly at his friend and then said, "You were saying?"
Maan folded his arms and said, "Nope. I wasn't saying anything."
Asad rolled his eyes and said, "You were talking about something, I just don't remember what it was!"
"OH! So that's how important my talking is to you, huh? That you won't even listen! Tsk! I'm not going to repeat what I said!" Maan said, like a small child.
"Maan!" Asad growled. "Stop behaving like a child and just continue the conversation, will you? I'm kinda busy here."
Maan glared back and said, "Oh yes, you're the Baron of Bhopal! I totallyforgot that you're the busiest man in the entire galaxy and even a good friend like me has to get an appointment to see you! You're so frickin' royal that I have to wear my silk boxers and iron my handkerchief in your mighty presence! OH HO! I'm so sorry for wasting your precious time, O' Master of the Minions! Wait, are the police going to come and put me in prison for that?! For wasting, let me see, just fifteen minutes of your time?!" Maan said in a single breath.
Asad's eyes went wide with horror. He suspected that in their months of separation, Maan had become a rabid psychopath.
"Maan. . ." he said calmly placing an arm on his friend.
"DON'T TOUCH ME, O' Autocrat of the Architects!" Maan bellowed.
"STOP giving me such hideous nicknames!" Asad whined in annoyance.
Maan pretended to be thinking hard and then said, "Okay, how does the Conqueror of the Cements sound to you? I think- "
"I sound like a pansy!" Asad said in frustration.
"Lord of the Laptops!" Maan said gesturing to Asad's laptop in excitement.
"Tycoon of the Tracing Paper!" Maan said with a wide smile.
Asad clutched his forehead in agony. There was no frickin' way that this was happening. His friend had become a pothead. There was no other logical explanation. He had gone from a business magnet to a deranged lunatic.
Maan's hands were flailing about in the air wildly and he shouted, "Leader of the Layouts, Sultan of the Sketchbooks, Prince of the Pencils, Shah of the Scales' "
"SHUT YOUR BIG FAT MOUTH!" Asad yelled. His head was pounding.
Maan smirked in victory at having annoyed his friend and then sat back calmly in his chair. The clock ticked patiently, almost as if in appreciation of the silence that filled the room.
The secretary came in with two cups of coffee and Asad seized his. He gulped in down in reverence. He never wanted caffeine more than he did now.
He looked up from his drink to see Maan patiently stirring his and adding the sugar in.
Maan gave Asad a small smile, almost like a truce.
Asad could see the evil that lurked behind those brown eyes. His friend was a nutter. He had to deal with this carefully.
"Maan. . . I appreciate your quietness. Thank you for being so considerate." Asad said truthfully.
"OH, I just wanted to show you how crazy I could get. All Geet's training, I must say!" Maan said heartily.
Asad nodded, almost pitying his friend's current condition. He looked at the watch and sighed. Half an hour more to go.
"Maan. . . look. I have a client coming in- " he started off.
"I know you have a client coming in, Khan! So stop saying it again and again!" Maan said in annoyance.
Asad sighed and realized how unfair he was being to his friend. Maan had come all the way from Delhi to see him and he was being a jerk. What had happened to all his manners? His mother would kill him if he saw how impolite he had been. He had a client coming in, yes. But he was prepared for that! It was high time he bonded with his friend instead.
Asad looked at Maan and said, "I was a jerk. I'm really sorry about how I behaved. I was just nervous, you know. You've come all the way from Delhi. It's been so long and everything and I- "
Maan cut him off saying, "Why are you apologizing, you fool? We're friends. Shit happens."
Maan grinned at Asad and Asad grinned right back. He felt a lot better now. He got up from his seat and Maan did the same simultaneously.
Walking over to Maan, Asad crushed him a hug.
"I'm sorry." He said again.
Maan hugged him back and said, "Apology accepted, Duke of the Distance Meter!"
Asad burst out laughing and thumped his friend hard on the back. "You've lost it, Maan!"
Maan executed a mock salute and said, "Anytime for you, Khan!"
As they settled back in their seats, Asad said, "So let's catch up until when my client comes in."
Maan nodded and sipped his coffee.
He had had just too much activity for a day with Asad. Geet would have been proud of his skills. He looked at Asad who was patiently sipping his second cup of coffee. He had really missed their banter.
Asad and Maan had met at a business expo in Delhi six years ago. It was in the month of April and Delhi was cursed with the sweltering heat. Both the men had removed their coats, incidentally and left it with a volunteer at the expo.
It was too damn hot to wear a coat inside, despite the air conditioning in the room.
Somewhere during tea time, Maan needed a visiting card which he had placed in his coat pocket. He had quickly picked up his grey coat and worn it, not bothering to check if it was his. It looked a lot like his coat, although.
Asad, who had gone to get his own coat, had worn the only remaining one, oblivious of the mix up.
When Maan had later checked his pockets and found a visiting card which wasn't his, he was flabbergasted. This coat had to be his! But obviously, it belonged to somebody else.
So began his quest in a busy business expo for a mysterious architect from Bhopal, Asad Ahmed Khan.
Mr.Khan had at first, been vehement about the mix-up and insisted that the coat he was wearing was his. He was obviously obsessed about his suits.
Maan had shown him the card and when Asad checked his pockets, he realized his folly.
Both the men had a good laugh over the matter and decided to extend their meeting into a cup of coffee. They had realized that their similarity in terms of attitude, dressing sense and business was way too similar to be true.
So when the business expo got over, the two friends decided to keep in touch.
Despite their busy business schedules and their physical distance, a sincere friendship had sprung between the two.
Asad had stood by Maan in all his times of trouble. He had been a good friend. Maan and Asad were very similar in their principles, the one difference being that Maan was more modern and had a more lax attitude towards life which Asad lacked. Marriage had changed Maan, of course. He was no longer the emotionless person he used to be.
If there was one person who had taught Maan about the importance of 'family', it was Asad Ahmed Khan. Maan had, on various occasions met Asad's mother and Najma, both of whom were extremely warm and friendly.
Asad and Maan had never felt the need to share things about each other's personal lives more than an extent. It was almost like as if they understood each other, whatever may be the situation.
Both had very few friends, which was expected because of the positions they were in. Which was why they valued each other so much.
And Asad thought that since Maan was a father now and he was married, he would have to give his friend some more space. They couldn't meet as often as they used to and business had become more hectic.
So on the persistence of his wife Geet, Maan had come here to Bhopal to meet Asad instead. He knew his friend would never come to Delhi to see him. He would think that he would be "disturbing" or "intruding" or some rubbish like that.
But off late, especially in the last six months, Maan had noticed Asad's tired and worn face on Skype. He had never seen his friend look so defeated. He had distanced himself; he seemed to be more preoccupied than before. The last few months had obviously been hectic for him. He was immersing himself in his work. It was high time he distracted himself and realized the other joys in life.
It was time for an intervention.
Maan was the happiest man in the universe right now. He was content with his life, content with his business and blessed to have his family.
And he wanted his friend to be equally happy. He deserved that.
"Earth to Maan!" Asad said in mock anger.
Maan snapped out of his reverie. He didn't realize that he had zoned out on his friend. He had completely forgotten the reason why he had come here to Bhopal. He smoothly asked, "What were we talking about?"
Asad gave his first genuinely relaxed smile of the day and said, "The love of your life, who else?"
Maan grinned in response and said, "Of course, Geet!"
