Zoya knew she had to answer his question before she left. She couldn't leave his 'why' hanging like that. He had been her support. She had trusted him. She still trusted him. But while she was walking towards his room, all she could think of was their past moments. Their fights. His laugh. His anger. His six-pack abs. Man. She was gonna miss seeing her Jahapana Six-Packs. She quietly knocked on his door and waited. Waited to tell him that she was leaving because she had to. But a couple minutes passed and he hadn't answered. She knocked again. And again. And again. Finally she gave up on him opening the door...and decided she could try sneaking in through the window like she had the last two times.
But when she got to the window, she saw him lying on his bed. Tossing and turning. She knew he had purposely ignored her. He probably didn't feel like talking to her nor did he want an answer. But god damn it, she was gonna answer him anyway.
She slowly opened the window and climbed in.
He had heard the window open and in his experience, only two people in his life had ever done that. One was his dear brother who had, in a second, disowned him. And the other was Zoya Farooqi, the woman who, in a second could easily leave ...without even talking to him. He knew though in a lot of ways both were his fault. Ayaan was angry because he refused to think of Rashid as an innocent man. And Zoya...well, Zoya could leave because she had no reason to stay. But still... it hurt.
"Mr. Khan?"
"You could have tried to turn the knob. Just because a door is shut, doesn't always mean it's locked. But forget it'you can sit down, Ms. Farooqi."
"Can I ask you for a favour, Mr. Khan?"
"Is that why you came? To ask me for a favour?"
"No. But I'm asking you nonetheless."
"Fine. What can I do for you Ms. Farooqi?"
"For the next two days, can you call me by my name? I mean'can we atleast act as friends? It'll mean a lot to me."
She had turned her eyes away as soon as she had asked him to call her by her name. She easily got flustered with him around. And she didn't want him to have that satisfaction. She looked back at him after she felt a little less flustered. She was shocked to see him standing right beside her.
Damn you, Jahapana. Give a girl a second before you blow her away. Give a girl a second before you turn her into molten lava. Gosh. Why is he standing beside me? Allah miya, what's wrong with Mr. Khan?
"What did you ask me?"
"Didn't you hear me?"
"I might have."
"Well then, you figure out what I said."
Always asking me to repeat myself. I can't decide whether he instantly becomes deaf when I'm around or whether I shock him so much that he barely breathes let alone listens.
She was greeted by silence. She couldn't decide whether he was thinking about what she had said or because he, once again, thought she had no tehzeeb.
"And before you say that I have no tehzeeb, the reason I asked you was because I want us to part as friends not enemies."
"Why is it that you came here at this time?"
"Well, Asad'is it okay if I call you Asad?"
"It is my name."
"Now you develop a sense of humor?"
"Miss Faroo...Zoya, can you please tell me what are you doing in my room at 1:30 in the morning?"
"I wanted to answer your question."
"I never asked you a question."
She silently stood there looking at him. She would never figure out why he pretended so much. She often wondered what he achieved by carrying that suit of pretence. Everyone carries a suit of pretence from time to time, but his ' his was always ready for battle. She knew so much about him, but he wanted to pretend that she knew nothing. That she was nothing. For a second, she wanted to turn and walk away. But she couldn't. How could she simply walk away from him.
"Ms. Farooqi? Earth to Zoya."
"Yes Asad."
"You zoned out. I said, I never asked you a question."
"You know Asad, I understand you more than you think I do. I get it. I get that you have to hold people at an arms length'just in case they ever hurt you. But news flash, I'm not one of those. I have never tried to hurt you intentionally. Everyone makes mistakes. But whatever floats your boat. And yes. Yes, you did ask me a question. And please don't pretend that you didn't whisper a tiny 'what' and 'why'. Because I heard it."
"Did you ever think that you are hearing things?"
"Am I seeing things too?"
"What do you mean?"
"I think, I saw you storm off'as if you were angry. Now, if I remember correctly, you had always wished me to leave as soon as possible. So I thought that you'd finally be happy. That there'd finally be peace in your house. That finally, chaos and bakwas shayari will never be allowed back into this house again. After I leave, you could easily listen to your best friend's "deep" shayari without me interrupting you. But honestly, I have never thought storming off had ever been a sigh for relief. Unless that's your unique signature. If it is, then all I have to say to you is, 'Allah miya, what's wrong with you Asad?' So do not pretend. Please. "
She was ranting and she knew it. But she was sad, frustrated and heart-broken all the same time. Nowadays, she had mixed feelings about everything. She always seemed to battle with herself. All because of this beautiful and tortured man in front of her. She wanted nothing but happiness for him. Lately, all she seemed to wish for, was that she would be the one who could provide that happiness. And sometimes, he made her think that, that's all he wanted for her as well. But then, there were the days that made her feel'well, like crap. She felt as if his life would have been better if she hadn't barged into it.
She looked beautiful when she became thoughtful. She looked beautiful when she smiled. She, simply, looked beautiful. So much had changed between them. She was much clearer to him'but at the same time, she baffled him. Like right now, he couldn't believe her. I've been rude, cruel and hurtful towards her. Especially in the last couple days. I've ignored her, yelled at her and accused her of countless things. And here she stands asking to part as friends. She wants to part. *Sigh*. I know she isn't right for me. But my heart beats a little faster every time she smiles. Or walks. Or talks. Or cries. Whenever she does anything, she takes my breath away. But now she wants to leave'what am I supposed to say? Please stay? Because I might like you a little too much? When he looked back at her, he could see that she needed this conversation as much as he did. He needed her just as much as she needed him'
She looked at Asad.
He was still quiet.
She smiled and softly said, "So, can you admit that you asked 'why' so I can tell you the reason?"
"Hypothetically speaking, what if I did say 'why''would you answer truthfully?"
"Cross my heart and hope to die."
His eyes widened.
Has he never heard that before. God. What century does he live in?
"Tell me the truth Zoya. Why are you leaving now? Out of all the weeks that you could've have left, why now?"
"Because Asad'neither have I accomplished anything nor do I think I will. So why should I prolong me living here and causing myself and everyone more heartache."
"Oh."
"Why did you think I was leaving?"
"I didn't know. I hoped it wasn't because of me."
"Oh, trust me Mr. Khan, if you think you've annoyed me enough that I would leave - and you probably have - but I still wouldn't leave. I'm a stubborn girl. I would fight with you every single day but I wouldn't leave till I thought I had a chance."
"A chance at what?"
"Family."
"What? What do you mean by 'family'?
" Doesn't matter."
"Do you mean your Abbu?"
"Not really. But it's alright Asad. It doesn't matter anymore. I just wanted to tell you that I have to leave because firstly, it's time and secondly, my visa's expiring."
"Did you try to get it extended?"
"Do you want me to stay?"
"I didn't say that."
"It's getting late."
"Yeah."
"I better go back to my room."
He watched her go. He wanted to call out to her. He wanted her to stay. He wanted to tell her that even though he fought with her, she was a friend to him. A friend who annoyed him sometimes, but nonetheless a friend. A friend who he counted on. And most importantly, a friend that his family loved.
She knew he was watching her. She wanted him to call out to her. But he wouldn't. And he didn't.
