Her hands brushed on top of the flowers that were decorated elaborately on the table tops and stair handles.
A soft giggle slipped from her lips as she looked down at the flowers with tears filling in her eyes. The beauty of the flowers reflected onto her dark brown eyes that were lined carefully with kohl.
Her soft pink lips curved into a smile as she suddenly looked up Sher baba, who seemed to scurry to finish the tasks that were given to them.
"Arey Sher baba!"
"Ji Zoya beti" replied Sher baba as he stopped and looked in her direction.
"Did you eat something Sher baba?" asked Zoya who fixed her dupatta.
Sher baba, the employee/ father figure smiled, " Arey Zoya beti... why does it matter? We need your work done quickly!"
Zoya frowned, " Has everyone else eaten?"
"No not yet beti" replied Sher baba.
Zoya sighed, " I don't want my family feeling hungry...please stop the work and tell everyone to go eat"
"You say it beti" replied Sher baba with a laugh. His white beard laughed with him as he looked at his boss-more like- daughter feel worried about him.
Zoya put her hands on her hips and called, " Break time! I want every one of you to go eat right now!"
All of them sighed in relief and nodded. They stopped all work and went off to eat, while Zoya began the work that they left off.
"Did you eat beti?" asked Sher baba.
"I didn't... I don't feel like it Sher baba...you eat.. thankyou" said Zoya with a small smile. She turned back to doing her work.
"Beti... your life didn't end... give life another chance" replied Sher baba as he looked at Zoya's sad eyes.
Zoya tried to smile and keep back the silent tears. " I know...I'm trying Sher baba" replied Zoya. She quickly looked down and went into a sea of thoughts.
She tried to give life another chance... she pieced her life back together, and created her own event planning business. It flourished in New York and as well in India.
She helped make dreams come true for many people and specifically for most girls. Zoya understood the culture in NYC and as well in India, and the way things are done, and that's the way she ran her business.
This was her secret to her enormous success in both nations. But she always wondered if she made everyone else's dreams come true, then why was hers shattered forever?
"Asad..." whispered Zoya with pain evident in her voice. A silent tear slipped from her eyes as she thought of the man that she was suppose to spend the rest of her life with. He made Zoya happy and Zoya made him happy. He would do anything for her and she wouldn't miss one moment to make him feel loved.
Zoya remembered the laughs he gave her and her endless amounts of laughter while he would tickle her until she snorted. He always use to make fun of her snorting when she would laugh too hard, and she felt all the more conscious about it. He, however, always told her that he loved her the way she was and she doesn't need to change for anyone. If he were, God Forbid, taken away from her, then he would come back somehow and remind her that he loved her.
But why did he leave her? Why did he break his promise to her?
She remembered the day she found out that Asad had strangely disappeared on his way to Florida, where the annual business conference was suppose to be held. And a two days after his business trip, was their wedding and all preparations had been made.
Zoya's veins froze at the voices of the authorities that told her that her fianc was nowhere to be found. She tried finding him, but she was unsuccessful in doing so.
And yet, it had only been three years since, and she still couldn't fathom the fact that he was gone. She missed him so much, and her wounds were made fresh by his constant reminders. She would listen to his voicemail until she went to sleep, and watched their engagement video until she remembered every scene consecutively.
She was heartbroken and she couldn't do much about bringing him back. She had toned down her bright colors and replaced them with pale pink, blues and greens. She prayed in her prayers every night that her Asad would be at comfort wherever he was and that he would come back to her very soon.
"Zoyaaa!" called a sweet feminine voice.
Zoya shook out of her thoughts and wiped any free tears from her eyes.
She quickly wiped under her eyes with her duppata.
"Ji Dilshad phupoo!" called Zoya.
"I've been looking everywhere for you! Najma is dying without you!" said Dilshad.
"Arey...this girl is crazy!" said Zoya with a sigh. She tried to walk past Dilshad, who stood at the door with a frown on her face.
She stopped Zoya by the arm and softly pulled her in front.
"Zoya beta..." said Dilshad with worried eyes. " Nothing phupoo...relax" said Zoya as she tried to smile.
Dilshad frowned and her brown eyes seemed to darken.
"Zoya...were you-" began Dilshad.
" Nothing is wrong with me phupoo...I just accidently hit my eye with something" said Zoya. She quickly covered her emotions as always. She was the master of covering her emotions with other people, but it took some time.
Dilshad analyzed her, " Are you sure?"
"Arey...Najma is screaming my name! I should go" said Zoya. Dilshad tried to talk to her, but Zoya kissed her on the cheek and left.
"Wait-" began Dilshad. Dilshad sighed and mumbled, " I'm sorry Zoya..."
"Zoyaaa!" called Najma.
"Coming!" called Zoya. She slowly walked towards Najma's room. She entered to Najma with the beautician fussing over her hair.
Zoya softly smiled, " Are you fussing with your hair again Najma?"
Najma nodded and pouted. Her nose shrivelled up looking at thebeautician who seemed frustrated.
"I can't do this hairstyle Zoya...it's too big!" said Najma. Zoya looked at the beautician and nodded for her to leave.
The beautician nodded and left the room. Zoya took careful steps keeping her foot in mind and stood behind Najma who was sitting at the dressing table.
"Arey wah Najmaa begum!!" said Zoya. Najma blushed and replied, " Thanks! I hope I didn't over do it with the makeup"
"You look beautiful Najma!" chirped Zoya.
"You're excellent with hair Zoya! Can you fix this big bees hive?" asked Najma as she looked horrified with her large bun.
"Let it down..." said Zoya. She bit her tongue at the words she spoke. She remembered how Asad always liked her hair down and never up. He even made her fix it during their engagement.
Najma quickly covered it up and said, " Zoyaa!! Help!!"
Zoya shook out of her thoughts once more and began fixing Najma's hair. She took the pins out of her hair and began fixing her curls. She sprayed hairspray and curled her hair.
"See...simple and nice" said Najma.
Zoya smiled and finished with her hair and put it in place with finishing spray. Zoya draped Najma's duppata on her head and pinned it in place.
"You're a lifesaver Zoya" said Najma with a large smile.
"I love you too" giggled Zoya. Najma's smile widened, " Keep smiling like
this Zoya... you look beautiful that way"
Zoya half heartedly smiled and nodded, " We should bring you down, phupoo is waiting for you"
Najma smiled and nodded. Zoya helped her up and the girls walked out of the room and down the stairs to find that Ali, Najma's fianc had also arrived along with the guests.
"Relax" whispered Zoya.
Najma nodded and Zoya carefully seated her at the front where Ali was sitting. Zoya smiled with tears in her eyes as she saw another close friend of hers was being whisked away forever by her prince charming
Zoya watched as the Nikkah ceremony began and she lifted her duppata up onto her head. She raised her hand in prayer.
She secretly prayed with all her hear to her Allah Miyan that her Asad would return to her safe and sound. She hoped that he still loved her the same way if he were to be back.
A tear slipped out of her eyes as she prayed to her Allah miyan with all her might. She put her heart and soul into it.
"Ameen..." said everyone together.
The Nikkah was done and Zoya opened her red eyes and wiped her tears quickly. She smiled at the women who were hurrying to congratulate Najma and Ali.
She stepped back away from the crowd and quickly went to the deep hallways where no one was present. She cried into her hands and pitied herself for breaking down at another event that she planned.
"You stupid baby, get over it...he's not coming back," mumbled Zoya.
"You lost hope already?" said a deep voice.
Zoya froze. She felt as if her heart dropped into her stomach. She couldn't move a single muscle and her hair stood up on her skin.
Her eyes widened and she couldn't speak a word.
Zoya felt his breath linger itself around her neck and his cologne seemed to engulf her into an embrace. She could only hear his steady breath tease her ears.
Out of nowhere, a deep smile caught Zoya's lips and he whispered in further, " I promised I would come back to you Zoya..."
She immediately turned around hearing this as she wasn't dreaming like all other times.
Her eyes, after so many years, saw the love of her life standing in front of her...safe and sound.
"A..Asa..Asad?" mumbled Zoya with tears making their way into her eyes.
Asad put his hands on her cheek and he gave her a small smile, " It's been long, but I came back to you..."
Zoya immediately threw her arms around him and there she sobbed and held onto him tighter. Tears flowed out of his eyes as he hugged her tighter, " I'm sorry Zoya..."
"Where the hell where you Asad? I've been waiting for you for three years and I tried finding you! But you were gone...! I can't believe it..." sobbed Zoya as she threw curses his way.
Asad chuckled through his tears, " Crazy girl...I wouldn't leave you..."
"Where were you!? Where did you go? My heart tore out of me when I
heard you disappeared!" cried Zoya.
"Shhh...jaan...calm down first" said Asad as he broke out of the embrace and wiped her tears. She hiccupped as she cried.
"You still cry like a baby Zoya...perhaps we won't need to have kids because you'll do all the crying for them" joked Asad.
Zoya hit him on the chest, " You're so mean Mr. Khan"
"Now where's my chulbuli Zoya gone?" said Asad.
"Asad you're dodging the answers to my questions" said Zoya with a grave tone.
"I'll explain Zoya...but all I have to say...you have to thank a certain someone for this" said Asad.
"Who?" said Zoya with confusion. She tried to think of the people that could have possibly united them.
"Sher baba?" said Zoya.
"Well...he helped me get here...but someone else" said Asad.
"Who? Tell me!" demanded Zoya.
"Thank the married couple a million times Zoya" said Asad with a large smile.
"Najma and Ali!?" said Zoya with her eyes wide in surprise. She couldn't believe it! Why would Najma and Ali do this for her?
"Zoya, my car had gotten into an accident on my way to my business meeting and I had been severely hurt. This old couple took care of me for years until Ali had inquired about me in Florida" explained Asad.
"But...why didn't you call me from there? What went on Asad?" asked Zoya as she put her hands on his cheek to check if anything else happened to him.
"Im fine Zoya...but I had short term Amnesia after that accident and I didn't remember anything" replied Asad.
"But how did Ali-" said Zoya.
"He found me almost a year back, but he was getting me treated and as well, I had my memory return to me at that time" said Asad
Zoya was shocked! Ali had found Asad, but didn't tell her?! She was close to furious, " What the hell!"
Asad frowned, " Zoya the reason he didn't because if he did bring me back immediately, I wouldn't have remembered you! You would've been heartbroken"
Zoya settled down and gulped, " So...it's really you right?"
Asad looked to the side and laughed. Zoya couldn't help but smile at the same time as he smiled. This was a dream come true for her.
"Allah miyan listened to me.." whispered Zoya under her breath.
"And Najma had to keep it from you and she kept you from any suspicion for a past year by getting you busy in planning gher wedding" added Asad.
" Oh that little-" began Zoya with a laugh.
"She did more than a sister Zoya...and we should go and thank her and Ali" said Asad with an encouraging smile.
Zoya nodded and she walked alongside Asad and out into the open. Dilshad looked in their direction with utter shock and Najma looked quite happy.
She rushed to Zoya and threw her arms around her friend, " Surprise surprise Miss. Farooqi"
"Pagal, Idiot, Loser! Stupid kid! I hate you for not telling me" whined Zoya. "It was for your own good Zoya and Ali did most of the hard work"
Ali walked forward and smiled, " Zoya, this was long needed, and starting my marriage off by uniting two people is more than what I could ask for"
Zoya was in tears. She was so fortunate to have people like this in her life. Dilshad rushed to Zoya and in tears she hugged her, " Oh Zoya! I'm so happy for you"
"Phupoo! Thankyou...thankyou everyone" cried Zoya.
Asad and Ali went into an embrace, " Thanks bro...you've done so much"
"You're like an brother and Zoya is like a sister to me...I couldn't resist after Najma told me about what had happened between you two" said Ali.
The two men broke out of their embrace. Suddenly, Sher baba appeared with a large smile and little tears brimming in his blue eyes.
Zoya turned to him and she immediately went and hugged him.
"Thank you Sher baba...Thankyou" said Zoya.
Sher baba hugged her, " Arey Zoya beti... you've taken care of this old man by giving him a place in your business...I had to repay you back somehow"
"Sher baba...my Asad is back...my Asad" said Zoya with joy bursting inher voice.
She broke out of the embrace and Asad embraced Sher baba, " Shukriya baba jaan"
"Take care of my little girl...she's been waiting for you" said Sher baba.
"Thankyou...I don't know how we can repay this back to you" said Zoya as
she stepped back and looked at the people that played a part in uniting her and Asad.
"You're already not taking money from me for my wedding events you idiot, so you might as well take this as compensation" said Najma with a frown.
Zoya nodded, " I love you two so much...you returned my Asad back to me"
"Chalo, let's leave this crying business and let's just enjoy the rest of the day?" said Ali with a large smile. He put his arms around Najma and Najma laughed, " He's right...let's go you two!"
The four of them laughed away and enjoyed the rest of the evening.
****A Few Weeks Later****
Asad and Zoya had gotten married a few weeks after Najma and Ali had gotten married. They only agreed to go for their honeymoon if Asad and Zoya were to get married right away. After long insistence by Najma and Ali, Zoya and Asad decided to take a honeymoon to Italy.
And now, Asad and Zoya were in their hotel room in Venice, Italy. It overlooked the water and the bustling city of Venice.
Asad and Zoya opened their balcony doors and Asad put his arm around her waist and looked up at the sky that seemed to shine so bright despite the fact that it was drowning in velvet black.
The moon was full and the stars decorated the velvety sky as if embroidery was decorated on a velvet cloak.
"We're finally together..." said Asad as he held Zoya close and kissed her forehead.
"I love you Asad..." said Zoya as she wrapped her arms around him.
He stroked her cheek and smiled, " I love you too.." He kissed her with full passion and she snaked her arms around his neck, kissing him back with yearning passion.
And there, that night, in the beautiful city of Venice, the two souls united into one forever...
