Asad, Zoya & an EPIC-FAIL attempt at a clean sever

Episode starts off with an anxious (and incredibly fidgety) Asad , waiting up for Zoya .

"Zzz .. Mmmiss Farooqui ..."

Whoever had thought that one day Asad Ahmad Khan would falter in his speech ? Surprise, surprise.

He clearly wanted to say Zoya . That was his first instinct, but his smartass-on-overdrive brain checked him in time. Refraining from calling her out by her first name is clearly a conscious effort on Asad's part to keep that wall up. Referring to someone by their first name is a very forward gesture - it means you have let down your wall and are willing to overstep their boundaries as well. It means you want to get close to someone's person. But Asad isn't there yet. It'll be a while before he is ready to call her Zoya. The last time he referred to her by her first name was when they were caught in a life and death situation with their innermost vulnerabilities exposed. But this is Bhopal and here decorum must be maintained at all cost as should be the boundaries between Asad Ahmad Khan and the miscreant lady-guest from New York . Too bad the transition from 'Miss Farooqui' to 'Zoya ' is already complete in Asad's mind. Which means deep down, he has begun to recognize and respect her for the person she is, ZOYA Farooqui and not just any female with an indiscreet Muslim surname.

Buying her the replacement iPad and cellfone ... its as if Asad is trying to ... err .. whats the phrase in Hindi ... EHSAAN CHUKANA ? I am pretty sure Zoya's genuine gesture of the haldi paste kept messing with his head as he tried to first outright dismiss , then ignore and eventually, cross-examine it out of frustration trying to decide what was her angle in it ... eventually reaching the conclusion that she meant nothing but heartfelt sincerity and gratitude. Gratitude he could take . But sincerity ? Heartfelt ? That would mean something way beyond mere thank you gesture. It wasn't supposed to be this way between them. There would be no lasting warm-feelings. He'd save her, they'd come back home, she'd say a polite thank you and they'd get over it like nothing happened and move on. But Zoya seems to want to take things forward, haldi paste et all, beyond clinical, civil co-existense. She actually wanted to get along with him. And that scared the shit out of Asad Ahmad Khan. So how does he go about fencing her out ? Ofcourse by doing what he does best - Closing the deal , balancing the books ... buying her a replacement for her lost belongings so that there'd be no room for any form of attachment between them post-Mangalpur . Like the reminder of a missing iPad and the events that preceded it. It'd be a clean sever, a well-closed business deal. She'd make haldi ka lep and in return he'd compensate for her iPad and they'd move past that. Unfortunately for Asad, as the song goes :

"Choday na chootay kabhi ,
Today naa tootay kabhi ...
Jo dhaaga tum se jud gayaa"

- Tum se hi (Jab we met, 2007)

Mangalpur forged an alliance, or if I may, a relationship . Eik rishta saa jud gaya. And Asad ke paas ab koi aur raasta hai nahin, siwaye usse nibhane ka. Buying her the iPad and cellfone was Asad's way of trying to tell himself that he'd done his part as the polite host and run away from the scene without acknowledging the prospect of a deeper connection with Zoya.

Unfortunately , Zoya took it for mockery of her own gesture, tears of indignation and a hurt brimming in her eyes. It stung her that he could belittle her earnest gesture of the Haldi paste and throw it right back at her in such a cold and calculative manner.

I need not go on about the trip-fall-take-you-down-with-me-on-your-bed session. Squeal-worthy as it was, it was pretty self explanatory. With two people with so much intentional distance between them like Asad and Zoya, there is no way to connect but for such not-so-accidental trippin' sessions to happen 😛 What happened AFTER that is rather interesting though. Asad kept telling himself that she meant nothing to him and funnily enough, negating its purpose himself by saying "She means nothing to me". Well you know what they say.

No language more honest than that of denial.

If she didn't mean anything, why the conscious effort to stay away ? That's right. Liar, liar , pants on fire !

Very nicely written. But look at it in another way - Asad heard Zoya talking to her Jeeju saying she will get a phone after she gets her replacement ATM cards. So, he took care of her needs by buying stuff. Who would you buy things for? family and friends mainly. He is an old school where he thinks it is his responsibility to take care of people in his family be it Ayaan's request for bike or flat to make Hasina bi shut her mouth for the sake of Nikhat. So, by buying these two things, he involuntarily accepted that Zoya is part of his life.

That would be my way of looking and the way she kept it back in his room saying I am leaving was so cute.

She made haldi paste that was a caring gesture too. If she hadn't said anything about 'z', she probably could've put it on his palm herself. I think if Zoya keeps her mouth shut, the relation is going to go far smoothly and quickly rather than the other way, but then it won't be Zoya right?

@Bold - EXACTLY. And I dont think he'd like her as much then 😆 .

And yes ... SO true about the oldschool bit. But his eyes were ... you know ... averted. THroughout the i-got-you-an-iPad convo, his gaze was averted and he JUST wouldn't look up at her. If it was Asad taking care of her as family ... wouldn't he be a lil more ... assertive and less furtive ? :/

^Agree with pretty much every word you typed.

I also feel there is another element here; without a phone Zoya can't be contacted or found. He wasn't crazy about Zoya going out, and he also wanted Najma to ask Zoya exactly what that 'kaam' was or at the very least where she was going (he quickly glances at Najma when Zoya tells her it's something that she has to do). A phone means she can be located -- it's his way of keeping her in check.

Unfortunately, neither of them actually knows how to express feelings: one hides it behind a wall of silence (since he was a child apparently, even before Rashid's abandonment) and the other behind humour (I would go into detail but I am leaving that for a post on Tumblr, at a later date).

He denies her presence in the house when Dilawar visits and keeps an eye on her door lest she be seen. He can barely contain himself at the sight of Dilawar, not remotely because of his poor parenting skills (because he could care less about Maryam's safety, as he categorically stated twice -- and he had no reason to lie the first time), but because of what they did to Zoya.

The other thing that I found interesting was that when Zoya sneaks out and he wakes up because of the noise and hears her voice, he says Zoya's name. Not Miss New York (like he did after their fight on the night of the meteor shower).

Very well said. Asad wants to keep tabs on her , for reasons we know all too well, without making it obvious ofcourse. And that fierce protective instinct , the way there's his jaws tighten when Dilawar mamu mentions Zoya, that glint in his eyes, the way he hides her behind the wall ... its almost feral. As far as Asad is concerned, Zoya is NOT to be messed with.
