So I was reading the post about the Novelty of 4 Lions shows and it got me thinking. After all, they say there are only 7 stories that can be told anyway, so it really is all about the presentation- and I must say that the presentation has been quite good so far! (And I apologize for how incoherent the following probably reads, I just wanted to share my thoughts)
Personally I think 4 Lions has been geting better with each show. With this one, even though we have the 4 Lions archetypes of moody hero with a past and bubbly heroine with hidden pain of her own, there are differences:
Asad: He is very polite and clearly cares about his family. He may be orthodox, but he isn't unnecessarily rude to anyone other than Zoya (and that's because she pushes his buttons). He knows how to smile and does so when he's around Ayaan and Tamatar.
Also, it's quite early now and Zoya more or less knows everything about his past already. On the other hand, Khushi had no idea about Arnav's mother until nearly the end of the show. So Asad really isn't a mystery, he's just really sad and buttoned up for reasons that Zoya already knows about. And she gets it, she does, but she still gets irritated by the way he judges her because she doesn't know that she's shaken up his world.
The difference here is that Asad doesn't know about Zoya's past, and that will be the big big gamechanger. And I honestly think they're going to seek it out together.
We do know this much: 4 Lions always creates jodis who have pasts that are intertwined. But whereas the pasts of the old shows would tear the couples apart (Khushi's mother indirectly causing Arnav's mother's suicide, Dev being Maan's brother and Geet's husband), whatever Zoya's past is- if it it really is connected to Ayaan's Mamujaan- will actually bring Asad and Ayaan together.
That's why I believe that Asad and Zoya are going to get together and then the past will be revealed, because Zoya is the connector here.
Zoya: She might be crazy and a "child woman", as someone else described her once on the forum, but she has a college degree, defends herself against goons as much as she cans, and gives as good as she gets. AND she makes her own choices. This is important.
I don't know how Geet and Khushi were at the beginning of their shows, but Zoya seems quite unique to me when it comes to women defending their own actions. She's shown as having a big imagination and getting carried away with it, but Zoya is not shown as stupid- just impulsive. I haven't seen Geet, but I watched IPKKND and even though I loved Arshi, it was defintiely obvious that Arnav had the upper hand when it came to mind games and Khushi handled him by messing with his emotions more so than meeting him mind to mind.
I don't see that with Zoya. She has a big heart and accepts what life throws her way, but she fights back with intelligence and guts whenever someone questions her. She doesn't do anything because someone tells her to, but because she has a personal reason for doing it (the falling star scene is a good example). She is fighting with Asad because he's fighting with her, but she has recognized his true self. What I really like is that it doesn't seem to affect her outwardly in away that changes her behavior on a macro level, but you can see in her microexpressions that they do. She's not pretending that nothing has changed, but she doesn't think it's worth DWELLING on.
It's not because she's bubbly, it's because she prioritizes. And right now, her priority is first to be nice to him, because he was unbelievably kind to her- so when he is mean to her, she gives it right back. When Zoya is yelling at him about being from the 17th century, she's just retreading old ground because she's not entirely sure how to relate to him anymore, so she's going back to what she's used to, just like him.
I feel like Mariam's presense in Asad's house is going to break this silly pretense of "kuch nahi hua" and force them to redefine their relationship again while they figure out how to help her.
Anyway, these are some of my thoughts! Share yours below :)
