Chapter Nineteen
"Tere Har Dukh Ko Apna Bana Lu,
Tere Har Ghum Ko Dil Se Laga Lu,
Mujhe Karni Aati Nahi Chori Warna,
Main tere Aankho Se Har Aansu Chura Lu"
Zoya was lost in her own thoughts. She was thinking and rethinking her situation with Mr. Khan. What was last night all about? She had never seen Mr.Khan behave this way before. The memory of his body pressing into hers flashed into her mind and she flinched. 'Allah Miah! What's wrong with me? Why did I respond to him that way, especially after knowing that he was off limits? Being in love with him does'nt excuse me to lose control like that. Zoya Farooqi doesn't encroach on another woman's territory!... I will have to talk to him about behaving this way with me in future'But it felt so nice being held and comforted by him.It felt as if for the first time someone really cared about me'how tempting it was to just forget everyone and everything and just sink in his arms'No!...No! He is not mine...'Aaliya's'...remember Zoya..;' she argued with herself feeling frustrated.
She quickly finished dressing and then taking her I pad and bag with her, she headed for the door. No one was in the living room. 'Good! Now I can leave without any hassles' she smiled at that thought. She hurried to the main door. But just as she reached the door someone grabbed her hand from behind. She turned to see Mr. Khan scowling at her. Then without saying anything, he dragged her with him to his room. He shut the door and pushed her against the door.
"Where do you think you are going, Ms Farooqi?" he asked shaking her by her shoulder.
"Mr. Khan!.. Mr. Khan please'what are you doing?" Zoya asked trying to push him aside.
Asad tightened his grip on her. "Maine aapse kuch poncha, Ms Farooqi'Answer me!"
"Allah Miah! What's wrong with you, Mr. Khan?...Mujhe bas kuch zaroori kaam se bahar jaana hain'"
"Kya zaroori kaam hain? Aur bina bataye kyun ja rahi hoon?" Asad wanted to know.
"Woh...'Woh mujhe kuch personal things sort karna hain'" Then angrily she pushed at him. "And I didn't know I had to ask your permission to leave this house."
Asad looked surprised. "Mera woh...'matlab nahi tha, Ms Farooqi'"
"Toh'...kya matalb tha, Mr. Khan?...Aur please haan'aap mujhe iss tarah baar-baar haath lagana bandh kijiye...'I don't like this kind of behavior." Zoya snapped at him.
Hurt flickered on Asad's face, momentarily. He let go off her and backed away a bit.
Zoya caught the play of emotions and felt bad for hurting him. "I...'I am sorry Mr. Khan...'Mera woh matlab nahi tha'...I just meant that...'achha nahi lagta naha...'Aapki engagement hogayi hai...'I mean'if any one sees us like this'...galat samjayenge'"
Asad turned around "The reason I had asked you to not leave the house on your own was for your own protection. After everything we know and everything that has happened in past few days you shouldn't be roaming around the neighbourhood alone. Take someone with you'If you don't want my company then atleast take Rehaan or Najma with you'" He said coldly.
"Mr. Khan maine kab kaha ki mujhe aapki company pasand nahi hain?...All I was saying ki'"
Asad interrupted her once again. "Make sure that you go escorted by someone and come home on time. I don't have the time to run behind you'Now you can leave'and please shut the door on your way out." Saying, he got back to do his work.
Zoya watched him switching on his laptop. His dismissal hurt her very deeply.
"I asked you to leave, Ms Farooqi." Asad reminded her.
Zoya didn't want to leave things between them this way. "No Mr. Khan'I will not leave. You dragged me in here'You demanded to know my personal business and now you are kicking me out because what I said hurt your feelings...' I apologize for hurting you'...I am really very sorry'...I didn't mean it...'And to answer your question' I was just going to the consulate office"
That caught his attention. Asad looked up from his laptop, "US Embassy? Kuch problem hain?"
His immediate concern for her gave her courage to push him out of his old Jahapanah mode. She knew he would always want to solve her problems.
She came forward to sit with him, "Yes Mr. Khan'...I got a mail from the visa office...'saying my application for visa extention ko cancel kar diya hain...'They sent me a mail earlier saying I have only a month of visa left...'toh jijju said he would use his connections to extend my visa for few more days'...last night he told me he succeeded in extending my visa and that I would get a mail from the office for it...'but this morning when I got the mail...'it says that my visa extension has been rejected...'In fact now the email says I only have a week left'... for the visa to expire'...Zaroor kuch misunderstanding ya galti hain...'Some mistake has happened...'So I was just going to sort it out." She explained.
She stood and started pacing, "I can't leave yet, Mr.Khan'...Mujhe abhi bhi mera kaam poora karna hain...'and I feel ki I am very close to it. I can't go back now."
Asad got up to comfort her, "Well...'I am sure ki koi mistake hi hui hain'...If your jijju has managed to extend the visa then am sure unko email send karne main hi galti hui hain'...I will go with you."
"No it's ok'...Mr. Khan'I can take care of it...'aapko' takleef karne ki koi zaroorat nahi'"
Asad got annoyed "Ms Farooqi...'Not everything I do 'is for you'...Kabhi'...kabhi kuch cheeze main apne liye bhi karta hoon.."
Zoya was confused, "What do you mean...'apne liye? Mera visa ka aapse kya lena dena hain?"
Asad covered up, "Aapko shayad yaad hoga ki aapne mujhe challenge kiya hain...'ki aap Rashid Ahmed Khan ko innocent prove karengi'...Aur agar main jeet gaya'...toh aap woh karengi jo main chahata hu'...So I want you to be here and watch me win." He smirked at her. Then continued "Aur waise bhi I know someone in the consulate office'It will be easy to get the correct information from him'...he will help us sort it out"
Zoya felt relieved that Asad had decided to help her. "O.K Mr. Khan"
She turned to leave the room when Asad grabbed her again. She looked up at him with surprise reflecting on her face."Kya hua Mr. Khan?" She wanted to know.
Asad smiled "Where do you think you are going?" He asked, closing the distance between them once again.
Zoya felt her self becoming nervous. "Uhm...'outside..so..so that you can change'...Mr Khan." She stammered her reply.
Asad whispered in her ears "Aap ko kabse tameez ka khayal aane lag gaya hain, Ms Farooqi? Aap toh mere kamere maine bina knock kiye aati jaati rahti hain'...Aur najaane kitne baar mujhe bina kapde'"
Zoya pushed him aside in a hurry "Allah Miah! Whats wrong with you, Mr. Khan?" Saying she rushed outside room. Slamming the door on her way out.
Asad laughed quietly. It was fun teasing her for now. But soon the time will come when he will have to make her understand his true feelings. Subtle hints don't work with her, he could see that now. For someone who claims to be so smart, Zoya was pretty naive and innocent as they come. He might just have to spell it out for her. And for that he had to make sure she stayed here.
*******************************
Ayaan climbed in to Asad's bedroom through the window. Looked like Bhaijaan wasn't home yet. No problem, he would wait. He climbed on the bed and promptly fell asleep.
Sometime later some voices woke him up from his slumber. He dove inside the thick bed cover trying to hide himself. The voices came from outside the bedroom door. Someone was approaching. The door slammed open.
"Aapko kya zaroorat thi yeh sab karni ki? Main baat kar raha tha na?" Asad's pissed off voice echoed in the room. Looks like Bhaijaan's home and he was not alone either.
"Allah Miah! What's wrong with you, Mr Khan? Woh aadmi clearly humse jhooth keh raha tha. Aap ne dekha nahi kaise woh baar baar undar waale cabin ki taraf dekh raha tha...'I am so sure ki he was hiding something'"
Asad turned around "Toh issliye aapne usse apne ipad se sar par mara?" he yelled
Zoya came forward to explain " No...'No Mr. Khan...'I hit him because '...ussne mujhe gali di...'Aapne suna naha ki kiss tarah usne woh gandi word use kiya mere against...'Kya bulaya tha ussne ...'hah'...FIRAANGI...'aise hi kuch kaha tha ussne'"
"Ms Farooqi, Firangi ka matlab'...Foriegner hota hain...'jo by the way aap hain...'Aur waise bhi ussne aapko gali issliye di kyunki aap waha khade rehkar usse corrupt officer bula rahi thi." Asad yelled exasperatedly.
"Par'...Mr Khan'... woh kaise keh sakta hain ki mera koi application aaya hi nahi'...jabki I have the copy with me'...Jooth bol raha tha woh...'Someone is making him do this...'I am so sure." Zoya asserted.
Asad sighed. "You should have let me handle this. Ab yeh office se aapka kaam kuch nahi hoga."
Zoya became worried. "Mr Khan...'Now what should I do...'I don't have that much time ..."
Asad tried to calm his temper. "It's ok'...I will try and find a good immigration lawyer for you'...We might have to go to New Delhi...'Ab jo bhi hoga ...'Delhi US consulate ki office se hi ho saktha hain'...Don't worry."
Zoya felt overwhelmed. She had very few people in her life who took care of her and her problems. And to have Asad Ahmed Khan in that category of people was a privileged. She wanted to rush in to his arms and stay there. Infact she was just about to when'...
Suddenly someone sneezed loudly. And both Asad and Zoya snapped out of their thoughts to look towards the bed for that was where the sound came from.
Someone else was in the room with them. Zoya got tensed. Asad pushed her behind him and slowly approached the bed to pull the bedcover aside.
Ayaan sat up suddenly and Zoya screamed.
Asad grabbed Ayaan by his shirt and dragged him off his bed "Tum yaha kya kar rahe ho?" Asad enquired.
But Ayaan didn't reply. He was busy staring at Zoya and Zoya looked horrified seeing him.
"You!... 'chor...'you thief...'tum yaha bhi aagaye...'mera peecha karte huaye?" Zoya screeched at Ayaan. She pushed Asad aside. "Ruko main abhi tumhe sabak sikathi hu...'I will call the police." Saying she pulled her phone out.
Asad tried to take her phone away from her but was not succeeding."Ms Farooqi!...Ms Farooqi! Give me that phone."
Ayaan just looked disbelievingly at Asad " Toh yeh aapki Ms Farooqi Hain? Yeh!" he pointed towards her disgustingly
Zoya snapped at that "Haan... 'main hi Ms Farooqi hu...'yaad rakna'...tumhe jail pochane wali ka naam yaad rakna acha hota hain...'dewaaro main likne main kaam aayega." She again pulled out her phone.
This time Asad managed to flick it out of her hand.
Ayaan was speechless. All his gracious thoughts about Bhaijaan's Ms Farooqi went down the drain. He remembered his encounters with her especially the one in which she sprayed the pepper spray into his eyes. Ayaan became livid.
"Aap kya police bulayengi...'unhe toh main bhulaunga...'aapne mujhe mall main attack kiya tha...'assault charges pe undar kar dunga." Ayaan approached her.
"Aap dono ek dusre ko jaante hain?" Asad wanted to know. But he was ignored.
Zoya started backing away seeing the wild look come into the boor's eyes. "Allah Miah! What's wrong with you?...Maine aapko attack kiya?...ya right! Maine aapko attack kiya...'tumne mera haath pakda tha...'you grabbed me first and threatened me...'maine toh kaha tha aapse mujhse door rehne ke liye."
"Tumne Zoya ka haath pakda tha?" Asad interrupted but once again no one answered him.
"Aapko andaza bhi hain aapke wajaise humhe kya jhailna pada hain?" Ayaan lunged at her.
Asad smoothly pushed Zoya behind him and turned to block Ayaan. "Ayaan! Behave yourself'...Yeh kya kar rahe ho" He pushed a squirming Ayaan back.
Ayaan was furious. "Bhaijaan...'Aap beech main mat aayiye...'Yeh humara aapas ka mamla hain...'yeh wohi sahiba hain jo mujhe uss din mazar par mili thi...'Issiki wajaise toh mujhe woh gundon ne mara tha aur aapko chaako lag gayi thi'" Ayaan kept struggling to get out of Asad's grip. But Asad held him in place.
Zoya was shocked with the guy's accusation "What Mazar? What gunde?...Mr. Khan yeh kya bakwaas kare jaa raha hain?...Wait!...Wait a minute! 'kya tumne Mr. Khan ko Bhaijaan bulaya?" She turned to stare at Asad and then her eyes shifted to the hairy boor. The resemblance was there. She was in big trouble.
"Mr. Khan'...Kya yeh Ayaan hain?" Zoya questioned Asad nervously.
Ayaan grinned and nodded his head smugly. Zoya closed her eyes and swallowed.
Asad pushed Ayaan back with force and turned to answer Zoya, "Jee yeh mera bhai hain'...Ab aap dono yeh bataiye ki how do you know each other. Some one will answer me now!"
Zoya ignored Asad's command as she was busy thinking of all the rude encounters she had with this hairy boor...'no Ayaan Ahmed Khan...'Jahapanah's brother.
"Bhaijaaan'...wohi toh main keh raha hoon'...yeh wohi ladki hai jiska peecha main kar raha tha'...do bar inhone mujhe gundon se pitwaya tha...'maine kaha tha na aapse'...phir kuch hi din pehle mujhe mall maine bhi mili thi ye...'aur inhone mere aankh maine kalimirchi ki spray mara tha."
"Pepper spray." Asad corrected, wryly.
"Haan wohi'...I can't believe...'Bhaijaan'...ki yeh aapki Ms farooqi hain." Ayaan explained frustratedly.
"Ayaan!" Asad said in a warning tone.
That snapped Zoya out of her musing. "Obviously!...yeh aap hi ka bhai ho sakta hain...'aapke baad maine agar kisi ko bhi itna rude aur insensitive dekha hain...'toh sirf isse hi dekha hain...'Yeh violent nature kya aapke khoon main hain, Mr.Khan?"
"Ms Farooqi!" Asad snapped at her.
"Dekha...'bhaijaan'...kaisi hain yeh?'Maine kisi bhi ladki ko itni batmeez behave karte nahi dekha.."Ayaan accused.
"Maine batameez hu?...Arre' ...Aap dono ne toh Rude aur Insensitive behavior main world record thod diya hain...'Mr. Khan'...mujhe koi shak nahi hain ki yeh aapika bhai hain...'Isse bhi ladkiyoon ke saath behave karna nahi aata."
"Maine kaha tha na 'Bhaijaan..." Ayaan began
"Ek minute!..Ek minute! Kya aap dono chup rehenge!" Asad snapped. " Ms Farooqi'...would you stop clubbing me and my brother together...'He is my brother so deal with it! And stop bad mouthing him'...Aur Ayaan tum...'Zoya humare ghar main reh rahi hain'...toh ab jo bhi ho... 'you need to deal with it too...'Now tell me...'why are you here?"
Ayaan had to struggle to remember his mission. But he had a job to do.
"Jee'Bhaijaan...'Mujhe Mumani ke bare main baat karni hain...'I am very sure ki Razia Siddique hi Abbu ke car accident ke peeche thi'...Jis raath Abu pe car hit karne wali thi...'toh mumani kafi distracted thi...'puri raath phone ki ghanti ke liye rukh rahi thi'...phir jab unka phone bhajha toh woh apne kamre main jaa kar baet gayi'...raath ko'Siddiqui saab jab aaye toh' ...Mumaani ko bahut daat rahe the...'Keh rahe the '...ki agar "Unhe "pata chal gaya tho...'woh kissi ko bhi zinda nahi rakenge'"
"Unhe? Unhe Kisse?" Asad wanted to know.
"Woh toh nahi pata chala...'naam nahi liya unka'...Par Mamu keh rahe the ki aage se haar chaal koi "Bhaijaan" karenge aur Mumani ko iss sab se door rehna hain...'tyaki "Unhe" pata na chale." Ayaan explained.
"Mr. Khan...'now who is this Bhaijaan?...Kahi yeh aapke abu ke silent partner toh nahi?" Zoya wondered.
"Yeah even I am thinking that'.Par agar yeh "Bhaijaan" silent partner hain toh woh log 'kis "Unhe" ki baat kare rahe hain?" Asad asked frustratedly.
"Mr Khan'...Rashid Khan ne kaha tha ki aur bhi hidden players hain iss conspiracy main...'toh ho sakta hain...'ki yeh Bhaijaan woh dusre aadmi se alag hoon'...Itne saloon main Siddiqui ne kabhi bhi aap ke Abu ko yeh pata chalne nahi diya ki woh silent partner kaun hain...'Toh mujhe nahi lagta woh uss insaan ke bare main aise carelessy aur openly baat karenge...'I have a strong feeling ki woh nameless man hi woh silent partner ho sakte hain'...Yeh "Bhaijaan" inke koi active partner sound karte hain...'you know Mafia types." Zoya giggled making Asad roll his eyes at her.
Ayaan stared. 'Abu was right! This girl was brilliant. Too bad, a girl with such brains and good looks had to come in such a rude package' he thought.
"Ms Farooqi...'yeh sab ek theory... 'ek supposition hain...'we have no proof." Asad stated.
"Issilye toh Mr. Khan...'I was saying ki mujhe Rashid Khan ke ghar jaana chahiye...'wahi humhe saare clues aur proof milenge'" Zoya argued.
Asad started to get angry. "I told you Ms Farooqi'...Aap uss ghar maine nahi rahengi'...Its too dangerous...'not to mention that the Siddiqui's will be suspicious of a stranger in their house...'no I cannot let you take such risks'...and that's final!"
Zoya was persistant. " But...'I will be careful Mr.Khan'...I promise'...Kuch nahi hoga mujhe...'and please remember we don't have any other option."
"Ek option hain." Ayaan interrupted before Asad could blast Zoya with his temper.
"Ayaan...'please...'Ab tum inhe encourage mat karo'" Asad snapped
"Ek minute...'Mr Khan...'let him speak'...What other option?" Zoya wanted to know.
Ayaan ignored her and looked at Asad "Bhaijaan, Apko yeh problem hain nah...'ki you don't want her to stay at our house'...So I have an idea...'Nikhat has been saying that she wants to learn computer softwares for sometime now'...If she..I mean Ms Farooqi comes as a computer teacher'..she can get entry in to the house without rousing anyone's suspicion...'She can look for clues during the day and come back here by evening."
Zoya got excited "Hey! That's Brilliant idea!...Toh tum apna dimaag bhi laga sakte ho'...I thought you were only beauty no brains."
Ayaan scowled at her. Asad looked thoughtful.
"Mr. Khan'...Why are you thinking so much? This is perfect...'Din main I can teach software to your sister and saat hi saat I can snoop around and look for clues. I will come back here in the evening..Koi problem nahi hogi." Zoya assured.
"Ms Farooqi...'Aap jaha jati hain na'...waha musibaat aa jaati hain...'You are trouble...'aapne waha jaakar kuch gadbad ki toh?" Asad snapped at her.
"Toh Bhaijaan'...Maine hoon na...'I will look out for her as long as she is in that house'...I will make sure she doesn't fall in trouble" Ayaan promised.
"Jee nahi...'maine apna kayal khud rak sakti hoon..'.mujhe bodyguard ki zaroorat nahi hai." Zoya snapped at Ayaan.
"Soch lo...'Ya toh I look out for you...'ya phir yahi beti raho '...apna clue telescope se dhund na 'yaha baete baete." Ayaan returned.
Both of then turned to look at Asad who had become quiet.
Asad rubbed his forehead. He knew they needed proof to find out more about this conspiracy. He also knew the only way to get those was to let Zoya go to the Siddiqui Mansion. And Ayaan suggestion was good one. This way Zoya wouldn't be completely away from his sight for long. And Ayaan was volunteering to lookout for her while she was there. And he knew he could count on his brother. But still he couldn't contemplate sending Zoya into such danger. She was his responsibility and if anything happened to her'
"Bhaijaan? What do you think?" Ayaan asked feeling concerned.
"Yes...'Mr.Khan 'What do you think?...Great idea na?" Zoya coaxed.
Asad turned towards the one woman in this world who had the power to destroy him. "You will promise to be cautious'...you cause any sort of trouble...'then you are out of there...'Am I clear, Ms Farooqi?...You will cooperate with Ayaan and you will take Rehaan with you'...This is non Negotiable, Ms Farooqi" He added immediately when she started to protest.
"So Bhaijaan...'when do we do this?" Ayaan asked
" Oh '...I think we should do this as soon as possible'" Zoya insisted
Asad waved her aside. "First we have to deal with your Visa problem. Once that is sorted out...you can stay here and drive other people crazy."
"Oh haan...'I forgot about that...'Fine then let me know when we should do this. In the mean time I will go bring Rehaan upto date on our mission." Saying Zoya left the room.
Ayaan watched her go. "Waise Bhaijaan'...yeh jitni irritating hain'...utni dikhne main buri nahi hain...'Mashallah kya dikhti hain'" he turned to find Asad glaring at him. He bit back his smile.
"Don't worry, Bhaijaan...'I will look out for her...'it's the least I can do for everything she is doing for Abu."
"Ayaan'...you don't understand...'She is trouble..." Asad explained
"I know...'Bhaijaan'...I have personally experienced the trouble she has caused...'Trust me I know what I am dealing with." Ayaan assured confidently.
"No...'No you don't know" Asad emphasized. "She is not just trouble'.but she is also trouble magnet...'Yeh jaha jaha jaati hain...'waha musibaat aati hain. You need to be extra vigilant and not get influenced in to doing all her harebrained ideas'...Am I clear...'And if anything goes wrong you will call me." Asad instructed.
"Yes Bhaijaan'...Don't worry I will keep her safe...'Now I better go home...'Ami would be worried." Saying Ayaan left through the window.
Asad sat on the bed. He had a feeling all this just might blow in their faces if they were not careful. He had no idea whether allowing Zoya to go was a good idea. Only time would tell how all this would turn out. He sighed. Then got up to change his clothes.
***************************
The officer from the Bhopal US consulate office called Bhaijaan.
"Yes'...Did you do as I asked?...Good'...Good...'So Asad Ahmed Khan came with her'...Interesting...'No...'No...'make sure... 'She doesn't get any extension'...pull all our political strings'...She is trouble...'I want the girl to leave this country without anyone suspecting it is foul play'...And then block her passport from getting any type of visa to India for sometime...'Put her on the black list...'Haan make it happen." Bhaijaan instructed.
"Sir why don't you threaten her directly...'instead of doing all this." The man wanted to know.
"Because'...She wont scare easily...'she is not that type...'Besides she has Asad Ahmed Khan's protection. If anyone threatens her or his family...'he will come directly after us'..I don't want that'...he doesn't of know my existence'...and that is how it should be...'As long as they are not aware of me'...I can pull the strings to stop them'...Now go and do what I have asked of you." Saying Bhaijaan hung up the phone. No they don't know about him. And so their ignorance would be their greatest weakness.
