My dad said the story of PKDH is much like Tagore's famous novel "Shesherkobita" where the Oxford grad rich guy Amit (much like Oxford grad rich guy Aditya) meets an unlikely soulmate (Labonya) when he visits the "pahari" area Shillong (instead of Kullu). Amit & Labonya are polar opposites (modernist vs. traditionalist) but they fall in love...but Amit never marries Labonya...he marries Ketaki...

In Amit's words:
ketakI and I - our love is like water in my kalsi (jug) ; I fill it each morning, and use it all day long. But Labannya's love is like a vast lake, not to be brought home, but into which my mind can immerse itself.

This is how it ends:

[Labannya] releases [Amit's] own submerged depth of sincerity, which he finds hard to adjust to... The struggle makes him a curiously pathetic figure... The tragedy is understood by the girl who releases him from his troth and disappears from his life.

And now you know why I am so intrigued...
