His fingers encircled her wrist as she tried to push herself away from him. With another hand, he gently pulled her chin to look at him.
As always, Piya felt herself falling into the depths of the oceanic eyes. And this time, she realised, he was forcing her to feel his emotions. She'd tried so long to block herself from his emotions- but now, she felt them hit her like a rampaging cascade.
He stared back at her, his hold on her only through the emotions he was not holding back any longer. He wanted her to know, to feel. His hold on her wrist had ended long back.
Piya's eyes widened as she looked at him. She could not understand what those feelings were. She'd never in her whole life felt such emotions directed towards herself.
'You understand?' he rasped hoarsely. 'Do you realise, Piya?'
She blinked. Her mouth trembled.
'I know you do,' he whispered, taking step towards her. 'I know you feel them for me. Don't you?'
Piya stared at him. 'Abhay...'
He gave a small smile. 'And you still treat me as though we were polite acquaintances.'
Piya shook her head wildly. 'No, Abhay, I- I- '
'Forget it, Piya,' he said with a sad smile, walking away. Piya watched him go, unil something in her snapped.
'Abhay?' she called softly. 'Abhay, please don't go. It's not what you think-'
He didn't listen.
Without thinking, she put on a burst of speed, catching his arm from behind, forcing him to stop and look at her. 'What is it?' he said. 'Come to give me a nice lecture on how we shud be friends? If so, save it- I don't want to be your friend.'
He turned to go.
'I didn't want you to be my friend either!' she burst out. 'I was terrified because I wanted more!'
He stopped and turned around to stare at her.
She was looking at him in anguish. She moved closer to him.
'What are you making me feel, Abhay?' she whispered. 'It's not lust, and it's not friendship.'
He said nothing.
Gathering up her courage, she raised a hand to stroke his cheek, tracing his jawline.
What she had not anticipated was the speed of his response, as his arms encircled her waist and he trapped her against a tree.
She stared into his eyes, recognizing this strange emotion that she too felt. It scared her and excited her in equal measure.
Suddenly emboldened, she traced a finger over his lips.
He took a swift intake of breath. 'Piya,' he whispered hoarsely, 'Don't push me now.'
She smiled and kissed him on the cheek. He reacted instantly, pulling her to face him and kissed her hard.
He'd kissed her before , in Misha's house, but it had been soft and gentle. Now, he was demanding and hardly gentle as he bit down on her lip, causing her to gasp and using the opportunity to enter her mouth.
She made a small noise at the back of her throat, and this seemed to encourage him, as his mouth explored hers none too gently.
They broke apart just for a few seconds before he kissed her again, before pulling back to place open mouthed kisses on her collarbone, causing her to tremble with need. Her knees went weak as she braced herself against the tree , while his masculine body pressed into hers, suddenly making Piya feel that there was too much distance between them caused by the layers of clothes.
He was hovering over her mouth again, and she braced herself in anticipation of his kiss ,her eyes drooping closed.
She opened them to find him gazing down at her, a smirk dancing on his lips.
'Abhay...' she whimpered. 'Stop laughing at me or I'll jinx you.'
'Wildcat,' he said, dropping a feather light kiss on the corner of her lips, smirking at her disappointed pout. 'If I didn't know better, I'd say you want me to kiss you.'
'You know nothing of what I want,' she hissed.
'I believe I have an inkling,' he said, pushing away the fabric away from her shoulder so he could gain access to the creamy skin.
'Abhay!' she snarled. 'Yes, Piya,' he said innocently, lifting up his head.
Caught up in the moment she leaned over and kissed him as he responded with enthusiasm.
Then suddenly, he stiffened.
'Piya, can you hear anything?' he said.
She stiffened too, tensing.
'Take my hand,' she murmured.
Their fingers interlocked with each other, Piya muttered a few chants, putting layers of spells above them so that their scents were concealed and their bodies invisible. The only clue she had of Abhay was of his fingers locked with hers.
'Piya, do you think I could pull you closer?' Muttered Abhay. 'This thing is creeping me out.'
She allowed herself to be pulled closer to him, and nestled against him, she felt suddenly safe.Abhay felt the stirrings of danger along with the scent of the werewolves. He glanced at where he thought Piya was, and felt uneasy when he couldn't see her. He felt her fingers sqeeze his briefly, and he knew then she had felt what he felt. Suddenly, he felt a rush of worry rush over him. That wasn't his.
The worry was quickly replaced by fear, and Abhay suddenly realised he could feel her emotions now, the same way she felt everyone's.
How, he had no idea.
The werewolves drew closer, he could hear their snarls very clearly, and he felt the stirrings of danger, not for himself, but for Piya.
She clearly felt the threat, and swiftly , she stood up, still holding his hand tightly. He felt her presence on his mind, asking for entry. Hesitantly, he relented, allowing her to speak with him through their thoughts.
He heard her thought crystal clear.
'I'm going to get us away from here. Don't let go of me.'
He had hardly conveyed his affirmative when he felt himself spinning. A tangle of colours rushed past, and the next moment, he was falling from air, landing on top of Piya, who was visible now.
He realised they had landed in a clearing surrounded by trees. A clear stream gurgled a few metres away.
'Um, Abhay?' came a tentative voice. 'I - I ended the spell. This place is safe.'
Belatedly did he realise that Piya was still pinned under him. He got off, noticing as he did that they were completely visible.
Piya seemed to have problems getting up; she was still lying on the undergrowth.
He extended his hand, she took it and hauled herself up with some effort.
'Are you all right, Piya?' he asked. Even as he did so, he felt a tiredness, an exhaustion that was not his.
'Piya, why are you tired?'
She smiled briefly. 'This spell is draining the first time.'
'You used this for the first time?' he said in shock.
'It could have been risky!'
'Yeah, well,' said Piya, breathing deeply, 'It would have been riskier to stay there, what with your history to the wolves-'
'I wouldn't have let them hurt you,' he snapped.
'It's not MY getting hurt I was worried about,' she retorted irritably.
She sank down on a flat rock, and he felt the doubt, the worry, the uneasiness coursing inside her.
'We need to talk, Abhay,' she said quietly.
Raichand Mansion :
'Time is running out, Haseena,' said Chand worried. 'We need the heir to be found soon, and preferably not by the wrong people.'
'We need to find her, Chand,' said Haseena, sounding worried, too. 'She is the only one who could tell us-'
They broke off as they saw a young man standing at the doorway.
He looked uncomfortable and nervous.
'I- er-' he began.
'What is your name, young man?' said Haseena. 'Are you one of Abhay's or Anvesha's friends from college?'
He nodded, and just then came a voice from the landing of the staircase.
'Dhruv?'
The human stared at her as she rushed down, not bothering to hide her speed.
'Dhruv?' she repeated, coming up to him.
Haseena watched the play of emotions across his face : worry, sadness, insecurity, and wait- what was that? Love? For her daughter? For Anvesha?
She whipped back to see Chand smiling slightly as he watched them. Was he happy for them? Did the human know ?
He suddenly turned and started walking out again.
'Coward!' screamed Anvesha.
Dhruv heard her scream out 'coward' to him, but he couldn't help it. These people- could he really trust them? What if their intentions about Piya weren't all right? For Piya's sake he couldn't talk to Anvesha.
'Yeah, right!' he heard Anvesha shout. 'Go on, run away- it's the same for all human, isn't it? The whole lot of you are the same- all you can do is betray! Fool that I was to fall in love with you!'
The words hit him, and the world seemed to move in slow motion as he turned around to look at her.
She was still shouting.
'Happy now, aren't you? You know what- Abhay's right. We ought to stay in the darkness and never even dream of the light. We're the monsters, right? So what right do we have to love?
And you know what? You humans are the monsters because all you can do is make fancy speeches! And now that I fell for you, great! Back off, like the coward you are-'
She stopped as she felt a pair of hands on a shoulder.
Dhruv caught her arms and pulled her around to face him.
'What?' he breathed. 'You love me?'
She glared at him. 'Are you deaf? What have I been yelling?'
He stared at her with an unfathomable expression. Her heart seemed almost alive in her chest. Any moment now, he would say he didn't want her-
'I'm a fool,' he whispered, looking at her. 'God, I'm an idiot. To hell with all this crap.'
And then he leaned in and kissed her.
They stayed locked in each other's arms for several seconds, or perhaps hours, till Anvesha heard her father's voice.
'Now, children, let's keep it PG-rated unless you two go to your room.'
She broke away and scowled, before dragging him in with her.
At her words, Abhay sat down next to her, so close that their thighs were touching. He nudged her with his leg. 'Yeah, I was thinking we could have a talk about that,' he said, smirking.
'So why did you let me kiss you like that? I thought you had a boyfriend?'
'It's not like that-' began Piya, but Abhay cut her off.
'Oh, I think it is, Piya. That little scene out there? It looked like a shot out of Twilight. Tell me, when did you get so Bella-ish? Are you going to say "you love him more"?'
'No!' snapped Piya. 'Just shut up, okay? I'm not Bella-ish!'
He gave no reply except to raise his eyebrows.
She glared at him. 'How dare you imply that. You know nothing.'
'Of course I don't!' snapped Abhay. 'You don't deem it necessary to tell me a single- damn-thing!'
Piya had gone rather pale, and now she looked down at her clasped hands in her lap.
'I lied,' she said quietly. 'Dhruv has never been my boyfriend. He- he's like an older brother for me. I- I love him, but not that way. Never that way.'
There was a silence. 'Okay.' said Abhay quietly.
'There is...more you need to know,' she began hesitantly. 'What- what danger you put yourself in, by being near me.'
'Oh, believe me, I know all about you being dangerous for my sanity,' he retorted.
'Your life.' she whispered quietly.
Abhay said nothing. He merely looked at her expectantly.
Piya took a deep breath and started.
'My mother left my father when she found out he was a married man. But the heartbreak had already taken its toll on her. She died when I was five years old.'
'I was taken to an orphanage where I becamme fast friends with Dhruv, Ashna and Navi. We shared a dormitory, so we practically lived together.'
'One day, we found a woman collapsed on the road in front of our orphanage... We wanted to help her, but we didn't know what to do. I suggested we take her in our dormitory so that no one would see. The warden rarely ever came to check on us...
Anyway, when she gained consciousness, we told her how we had found her and where she was now. She thanked us for not taking her to a hospital- not knowing we wouldn't have thought of it anyway. The hospital was so far...
Her name was Meenaxi, but she told me to call her Mimi. She was awfully sweet, listening to me when I would miss my parents. She would wipe my eyes and tell me stories.'
'A few months later, she told us she wasn't human. She was a very powerful witch, and she was going to die. She performed a ritual with blue violets ... And she told me I would inherit all her powers when she died. Apparently she'd chosen me because I had a pure soul.'
Abhay's eyes widened. Could it be that his Piya was-?
'She left many instructions in books for me. Some of them, like never to use my power on a full moon. Like that my powers would increase every birthday till they reached their potential. Like never to let emotions overpower me. That's how I guess, that power came to me. The ability to feel other's emotions.'
'When Mimi died, it was calm and peaceful. Her body vanished, and I felt the power thrum within myself.'
Abhay hadn't said a word. He was listening intently.
'When I was eight... I realised what I was when I lost my childhood. You'd say I lost my childhood long ago, wouldn't you? But I lost my childhood that day alone.'
'It was mid-morning. The four of us- Dhruv, Ashna, Navi and I- we were playing ball. But I didn't know how to control myself and the ball went far into the bushes. Navi and Aashna went to retrieve it...'
A tear escaped her eyes.
'Dhruv and I waited and waited. When they didn't come, we went round the corner to find them- and then we realised that a man had cornered them. He was a vampire- his fangs were out- I don't know how he was in the sunlight. Anyway, he was hunting for me- if I say it properly, the one who held the power.. I don't know why, but Navi and Aashna didn't say anything. They each said they had the power. The vampire knew they were lying. He threatened to kill them, but they were defiant in not telling him. I wanted to go, but Dhruv was pulling me back.
And then, while we watched, the vampire...killed those two inncocent children who had been my best friends. My emotions got the better of me and a fire exploded on the playground, charring their bodies. I lost consciousness and I didn't wake up for two days. Dhruv told me later that it was because that fire was drawn from my own energy.'
'He killed them, Abhay. My friends died because of me, can you even imagine my cowardice? I did nothing to stop him! They died trying to save me- and I couldn't save them with all the power I had.'
She was crying in earnest now. 'I lost my childood, my innocence that day. I knew anyone who was close to me- was in danger. I begged Dhruv to change his orphanage. I compelled the warden to shift him away. Then Dhruv was adopted by a couple, and he was taken away from me : he was safe.'She felt Abhay's hesitation in touching her as he sqeezed her shoulder lightly, but it was as though a dam had burst inside her.
Her body heaved as she cried silently. 'I wanted a normal life, Abhay. I wanted to be able to make friends, flirt with boys, have parties... God, I don't want to be like this, terrified of being close to someone in case they got hurt.'
She suddenly stood up, turning away from him.
Abhay got up too, but he made no move to approach her.
'Do you know what I felt when I saw you the first time, Abhay?' she said suddenly.
'I felt terrified. I was so scared of you. Not because you were a vampire. But because I could feel you reaching into the depths of my soul with just a glance. And when you broke into my mind that night...'
Her voice wavered , but she continued, 'I hated you- and I hated myself for what I had allowed you to do. You- you have no idea- the way you care for me, the way you snap back at me at times- it feels like I am home with you, and it scares me because I don't want you to leave!'
'I see,' said Abhay calmly. He lightly took her arm and turned her around to face him, then dropped his hand as if burned.
Piya looked at him. She could sense nothing from him...he was being forcefully calm.
Was he angry? Did he hate her? What was he thinking?
'Let's get you back,' he said, still in the same neutral voice.
Dazed, she followed him out, her thoughts in a whirl. Abhay did not speak all the while.
'Go on,' he said as they reached the gates.
Piya stared at him. 'What- what are you on about?' she whispered.
'Abhay? Why aren't you speaking? Do you hate me?'
His eyes widened, but he still said nothing. Piya's mouth thinned.
'Of course. I should have expected that. Sorry I blabbered like an idiot. Won't happen again. Goodbye, Abhay.'
She made her way to her room, locking the door shut, angrily wiping away the few tears that had escaped.
'Good move, that,' came a casual voice from near the wall.
She whirled around, a spell ready on her lips.
Abhay was standing there, wearing a smirk, his arms crossed.
'You- what - how did you-' spluttered Piya incoherently.
He jerked his head towards the half-open window. 'I'm not human, or have you forgotten?' he said enquiringly.
She glared at him. 'What do you want?'
'If I told you, would you give me?' he said.
She became wary. 'Depends,' she said through clenched teeth.
He uncrossed his arms and walked over to her. 'I really, really want you.'
She stared at him in shock, then flushed.
'I- don't know what you mean,' she said, taking a step backwards.
'Perhaps you would like a demonstration?' he said moving yet closer; she felt her senses spin again.
She did not know what reply she gave, all she knew was the touch of his lips on her forehead.
'You know,' he said softly, kissing her on one eyelid, 'you should really-' kissing her on her othe eyelid- 'wait for a while-' he kissed her nose - 'before forming conclusions-' placing his mouth on her cheek- 'that I hate you, because,' he nibbled lightly below her ear, 'because I like you too much-' his lips were on her throat 'to ever hate you. Understood?' he said, cupping her face, staring deep into her eyes.
'You- really don't mind?' she asked breathlessly.
He brushed the corner of her lips. 'Haven't you been listening, or was I too distracting?'
'No- I mean, yes,' she fumbled.
'Will you promise,' he said quietly, 'to stop doubting me?'
She stared at him. 'Yes,' she said at last.
'Good,' he said, sounding satisfied, as he leaned in to kiss her again.
She responded quickly, pulling him closer and deepening the kiss.
He broke away from her, and she mewed in protest.
'Breathe,' he said softly, smiling into her eyes.
Daringly, she ran her tongue over his lips, feeling a surge of triumph as se was hauled close to him as he kissed her hard.
His hand slid under her top, his fingers splayed over her curves as she gasped at the intimacy of their contact.
He teased her curves, placing open mouthed kisses in the hollow of her neck.
She arched against him to give him greater access, whimpering in delight as he encircled the area around her peaks.
'Abhay,' she whispered weakly, leaning against him for support , 'What are you doing?'
'Nothing you won't like,' he teased, pulling down her top and exposing her to his burning gaze.
She went very still.
Abhay leaned and took one of her nipples in his mouth, her inner garment long undone.
She reached over to kiss him on his shoulder, her fingers fumbling with the buttons on his shirt.
And then Piya froze as a knock sounded on the door. 'Piya? Piya Jaiswal? Are you in there?'
'Tell her to leave,' whispered Abhay, his fingers making teasing circles around her curves.
'Ye- Yes!' she answered back shakily. 'I was just- just changing my clothes- I'll be out in two minutes-' she broke off as he bit down on her nipple.
'Abhay!' she hissed, pushing him off. 'Go, you idiot! If she sees-'
'Abhay, no,' she said, reaching over to get dressed. His shirt was half off, his jacket lying on the floor. She leapt to pick it up, handing it to him, flushing brightly.
'Go, please,' she begged, and he relented, dropping a kiss on her mouth and exiting throught the window.
Fixing her hair with a word, Piya opened the door to see the warden.
'Hello, dear, I just came to take down the curtains, we'll be putting up some new ones,' she said.
As Piya let her in, she belatedly realised how the bed would have looked.
'You didn't make your bed today, Piya?' said the warden, looking at the rumpled sheets.
Piya blushed as the memory of Abhay pulling her close washed over her.
'I'm sorry,' she said meekly. 'There was a test today, so I just forgot.'
'Oh, very well, dear,' said the warden, breezing out with the curtains.
She ran to the window, and saw him below, looking back at her. 'Go!' she mouthed.
Raichand Mansion :
Abhay switched on the light as he entered his room and froze.
'What the hell?'
Anvesha and Dhruv broke apart.
