Chapter 7
Both Abhay and Pia looked at each other in shock. They could not comprehend anything. Abhay spoke up: I don't understand Pia. Your step mum had ran away, then how could you see her murder.
Pia: She did not run away Abhay. I saw her murder and I know it.
Abhay: But then why and who would spread such rumours about her having ran away and why would have your father believed such rumours if they were not true?
Pia: What if he himself spread the rumours Abhay.
Pia's dead voice could not escape Abhay's notice and he was immediately concerned seeing her dead expressions and asked: What do you mean Pia? What are you thinking?
Pia replied in a dead voice: What if my father himself killed her Abhay and then spread such rumour. It fits doesn't it? My father met her before coming to Mumbai, so maybe she did not have any relative or friends in Mumbai, so no one here would notice or question her disappearance and then after killing her he spread the rumour of her having ran away, and people believed him considering the age gap between them and because of his reputation. No one ever imagined him to be a murderer.
Abhay: But why would he kill her in the first place Pia? There has to be a motive behind the murder.
Pia: Maybe she was indeed cheating on him and that might have infuriated him.
Abhay: Do you really think your father was that kind of man Pia?
Pia: Who knows Abhay! None of my aunts ever met him as mom had married him. They had only communicated with him through phone and letters. I don't know Abhay. But now I agree with Jeh and T. We should have never involved ourselves in this mess.
Abhay: But now we can't move back.
Pia: No, we can't. Now we will never be able to rest till we have found the exact truth and the reason behind the truth.
Abhay: That's right Pia. We need to find the complete truth now. But how should we go about it.
Pia: I don't know. Maybe we should hire some detective agencies. Probably Kabir can help us finding a good sleuth.
Abhay: no Pia. This matter is too sensitive to involve an outsider. Besides, I really don't see what they will do, that we can't do ourselves.
Pia: Then you tell me how do we go about it.
Abhay: Maybe we should try speaking to Maya's friends and relatives to understand what kind of person she was and if she was indeed involved with someone else. Also, we may try finding out what kind of man your father was from their perspective. That might be helpful in understanding the kind of man he was.
Pia: Oh that is completely easy. Because we know very well whom all to talk to, right! Be realistic Abhay!! We have no clue about Maya or her family and friends. She was murdered 18 years back and no one even bothered finding out her murderer. How are we going to find who her friends or family were?
Abhay: By placing an ad in papers and social networking sites. Someone must be there somewhere who would be knowing about her! She could not have just appeared out of thin air one fine day. If not family, then at least she would be having some friend or teacher or maybe just an acquaintance. We can at least try. We don't have another option right now.
Pia agreed and Abhay proceeded to place an ad in the papers and social networking sites about her. The ad read: Friends or family of Maya Sharma Rathod, former resident of No. 10 Palm Beach Road, Navi Mumbai may please contact Mr. Raichand at the below mentioned contact number or email id. He also mentioned his office address for correspondence by snail mail as he thought it best not to arise any suspicions. They then began waiting for a response to their ad. Abhay joined his office but would keep calling Pia from office every hour to know if anybody called or mailed, but they had no such luck. A week passed by and then suddenly one day Abhay got a letter which made him so excited that he wound up his work for the day and rushed home. He and Pia then read the letter together which read:
Dear Mr. Raichand,
Apropos your recent advertisement, I would like to introduce myself as Dr. Roy ' the guardian of Maya Sharma after her father's death who happened to work in my father's office. However I have not heard of Maya for last 18 years. Still, if there is any interesting thing that you would like to discuss with me, you can pay me a visit at my residence in Pune. My address is printed on the envelope.
Regards,
Dr. K Roy
Abhay and Pia felt like they have hit the jackpot. Maya's guardian himself had contacted them. He could be a great help to them in solving her murder mystery. They immediately called him up and booked an appointment to meet him the coming Saturday afternoon.
