Chapter 17

Last Chapter

Part 1

Pia was shocked and was about to faint but Abhay managed to hold her in time. He steadied her but Pia was pale from shock. Dr. Roy urged Abhay to take Pia home and give her some hot chocolate to calm her nerves. Abhay took Pia home where Kantaben was waiting for them in indignation. She almost reprimanded them shouting: How could you do this Sir, to this poor servant. You gave appointments to a certain Mr. Jeev Kumar and Bijoy when you yourself were going for another meeting and you did not even bother to tell me that you are expecting visitors. They were so rude to me, especially that Bijoy.

Abhay was taken aback at this and before he could reply that he never gave anyone any appointment, Kantaben went on saying: the policemen are also digging up the garden from under the stairs I am horrified at working at such a house which has police coming up in its house doing digging up work. Oh, what a shame it will bring upon me. People will say I must have stolen things from house and buried them there. What have you lost anyway, that you are digging the Earth up?

Abhay was worried about Pia's condition and so he ushered her inside and asked Kantaben to bring her some hot chocolate first. Kantaben immediately became concerned seeing Pia's condition and went to make the drink and handed it to Abhay. But, just as he was about to hand the drink to Pia, a police constable came inside and announced: You were right sir! the body was indeed buried there. We have found a skeleton in the Earth and initial forensic estimate confirms that the body must have belonged to a woman.

Kantaben gave a shriek and exclaimed: A body in this house!!!! OH how horrible. She swooned a little as if feeling dizzy and requested Abhay: Sir, can I please have just one sip of this hot chocolate. I don't think I can handle so much shock.

Abhay reluctantly handed the cup to Kantaben who went on speaking while sipping on the hot chocolate: How terribly upsetting. Oh how my reputation will be tarnished. To have worked in a house with hidden bodies!! I never ... i...m...*cough*...ag...*cough*...ined...

Kantaben held her throat trying to stop her choking, but Abhay was shocked to see blood coming from her nose. He immediately shouted for help and the policemen rushed inside. They helped in taking her to the hospital immediately while Pia had stood up in even bigger shock than she was till now. She clutched Abhay tightly and asked: Abhay, what happened to Kantaben. Was.. could.. there be something in the drink! But what and who will put it there. Do you think Jeev or Bijoy did that when they turned up here in our absence? That really seemed quite fishy.

Abhay nodded his head in agreement that it was indeed fishy having both of them turned up here in their absence. He decided to call them up to know the purpose of their turning up here, but he got the same response from both of them - that they had got a call from a man claiming to be his assistant telling them to come at once as it's very very urgent. Abhay was confused as to who could have done this when Pia asked if they could have called each other or one of them calling the other and lying about his own call. Abhay just nodded in confusion but before he could think of anything, the police constable came and said that their work was over and Abhay would have to accompany them to the Police Station to give his statement. Abhay asked Pia to take care of herself and left with the policeman. Just when they were leaving, they collided with Dr. Roy who was coming to their house to ask if Pia was feeling ok now. Abhay left without any explanations but Pia briefed him about the turn of the events but carefully omitting to tell him that it was Maya's body that was discovered. Dr. Roy expressed his shock and wondered whose body could have been found. Pia noticed a nasty cut on Dr. Roy's hand which was bleeding and asked him if he had injured himself and he replied that he had cut himself against the barbed wire near the station and if she could bring him a knife so that he can cut off the dead skin and bandage himself. Pia went to get a knife and handed it to him. She started moving upstairs and just as she reached the banisters, she got a call from Abhay's subordinate in the office who wanted to confirm if Abhay would join office on Monday.

Pia assured him that he will and on repeated questioning, she replied in a little irritated tone "Yes, Mr. Malhotra" and she happened to look down at the hall just that instant and there she saw the man with a knife in his hand and blood everywhere. Her childhood memories returned with full force and she knew in that instant that the man she was seeing downstairs was the man who had killed Maya. A shriek of horror escaped her lips making Dr. Roy look up. He started mounting stairs asking her what happened. Pia was pale with horror, but she gathered some courage and started moving backwards and managed to speak in as brave a voice as she could muster: It was you! It was you who killed her! It was you who killed Maya!!

Dr. Roy looked at her with a confused expression on his face for an instant, but next instant all pretensions were shed and he moved menacingly towards Pia with the knife in his hands and menacingly speaking to her: You could not leave it alone, could you! No, you had to dig your little nose into a matter which did not concern you and disturb my life after these 18 years. But I will not have it. I killed her in this very hall 18 years back and now I will kill you in the same place.

Pia noticed that in their movements of her trying to escape and him trying to come near, their positions had reversed. It was now he who was near the banisters now while she was on the stairs taking backward steps. She decided to run downstairs, but Dr. Roy was faster and he grabbed her by the back of her neck and raised his hand to slit her throat. There was a loud scream and Dr. Roy's grip on Pia's neck loosened.
