Part 9
Raichand Empire
"Bring the new project file to my office," Abhay ordered his new secretary on the phone. He was busy working on another file when the door opened and a familiar dangerously sweet scent caught his attention. He looked up and found Piya standing near his desk with a file in her hand.
"Good morning sir," she said sweetly with a big smile and placed the file on the desk.
"What are you doing here?" he asked rudely.
"I'm your new secretary," she said brightly.
Abhay stared at her with disbelief. Why had she applied for the job of his secretary? And why was she acting normal? She saw him in the jungle that night then why was she not scared of him? He had to read her mind and find out but it was useless because at the moment all she was thinking about was how to impress him.
"OK then you're fired!" he snapped. "Now get lost!"
"You cannot fire me without reason Mr Abhay Raichand."
"I can do anything Miss Piyali Dobriyal. And you know that don't you?"
That wiped the smile off Piya's face. Was he hinting at Kabir's death?
"Abhay, I know you hate me but that's personal," she said fighting hard to keep her voice calm. "Please don't mix personal life with professional life."
"You talk as if I have no other option but to let you work here," he said.
"But ... but I want-"
"Did you not hear what I said earlier? You are fired so leave."
"No I will not," Piya said stubbornly.
He stood up and started advancing towards her. Piya started to get nervous but stayed rooted to the spot. He stopped close to her and grabbed hold of her wrist. He pulled her towards the door and pushed her outside his office.
"I don't want to see your face again in Raichand Empire," he said spitefully while Piya looked back at him with pure hatred.
He tried to read her thoughts again and heard her cursing him, which angered him further so he slammed the door on her face. She turned around and found all the staff staring at her. She started thinking about what to do. Why did he hate her so much? She had to find out but before that she had to save her job.
...
Later on, Piya sat in Chand's office making fake crying noises. Chand could see right through her.
"Uncle, Abhay has fired me for no reason," she wailed.
"You were overqualified for this job anyway," Chand said reassuringly.
"But I'm inexperienced," she cried. "I wanted to start off with a simple job."
"Yeah but it's difficult to work with Abhay."
Piya thinking fast said, "It was my dream to work in a big company like this." She looked at Chand hopefully, "Please uncle, you'll save my job won't you?"
Chand did not know how to politely get rid of her and finally said, "OK, you get back to work. I'll talk to Abhay."
"Thank you uncle," she said and jumped up happily.
She left the office and minutes later Abhay barged in.
"Dad!" he shouted. "How could you let Piya work when I sacked her?"
"Calm down!" Chand hissed. "And don't speak to me like that."
Chand's stern gaze made Abhay look down.
"I'm sorry," he muttered.
"What has she done that you want to fire her on the first day of her job?" Chand questioned.
"I just hate her," Abhay answered venomously.
Chand started to get suspicious and so Abhay decided to leave. He did not want to give his father another excuse to ask him questions. He would make Piya resign.
"Fine," he said. "She can work."
Outside, Piya was stood at the reception chatting to Ruhi.
"Piya thank you so much for taking up this job otherwise boss would sack me," Ruhi said gratefully.
"You know what Ruhi? You have helped me by giving me this job," Piya said happily.
"Have I?" Ruhi asked in surprise.
"Yeah," Piya smiled and walked off leaving a confused Ruhi behind.
For the remaining office hours, Abhay avoided calling Piya in his cabin and gave any instructions to Ruhi instead.
...
Dobriyal House
After a long and tiring day at office, Misha came home and collapsed on the sofa in the lounge. Soon Piya joined.
"I found your phone," Misha said handing her a mobile. "It was under the driver seat in my car."
"Oh that's why I couldn't find it because your car hasn't been used since Kabir-" her voice trailed off at the mention of Kabir.
"So did you report it?" Misha asked hastily.
"No, I completely forgot."
"I'll just go and freshen up," Misha said and went off to her room.
Piya tried to switch her phone on but was unsuccessful because the battery was dead. Shortly after Madhu and Arnab joined her. Madhu announced that she and Misha were to go out of town for a small holiday with Sid in an attempt to cheer Misha up. But Piya refused and told her that she could not go because of her new job at Raichand Empire.
"What?" Madhu asked in surprise. "You have joined Raichand Empire? Why?"
"Mom, I don't want to study further," Piya explained. "I want to work."
"But why Raichand Empire? You could work in your dad's office with Misha," Madhu said crossly.
"Mom, I want to work in a construction company."
"Why should my daughter work under a boss when we have our own business?"
"Madhu," Arnab intervened, "if Piya wants to work with the Raichands then let her. What's the big deal? And Piya, I know why you want to work there."
Piya looked at him with surprise. How could dad know?
"You want to be known as Piyali Dobriyal not as Arnab Dobriyal's daughter, right?" Arnab asked. "I'm proud of you."
Piya smiled a little and nodded, slightly embarrassed because that was not true.
"No you will not work with them," Madhu said firmly. "This is my final decision."
"Mom, please," Piya pleaded but Madhu left the scene. "Dad, please explain to mom."
"OK I'll try," Arnab said but he knew he was always helpless in front of Madhu.
...
Next day, Piya did not go to work because Madhu had still not given her permission. She called Ruhi to inform her and then started to think about what to do. She could not leave this job as it was the only way she could stay near Abhay. Unable to think of anything she rang Sid.
"Sid, where were you? I've been calling you all morning," she complained as soon as he picked up.
"Relax love, I had a few meetings so my phone was on silent," he said.
"Oh sorry," she mumbled. "You must have been busy."
"It's OK. So why were you missing me so much?"
"I'm in a problem."
She told him how she wants to work at Raichand Empire but her mom won't let her.
"But Piya why are you so adamant to work with there?" he asked.
"Listen I'm going to tell you something but please don't tell my family about this," she said.
"OK, I won't."
Piya told him about her doubt on Abhay and so she wanted to find proofs against him. There was a long silence.
"Sid, are you there?" she called.
"Yeah ... er ... interesting theory but I think you're getting it wrong," he finally said.
"No I'm not," she said hotly.
"But you're blaming someone of murder-"
"And I have reasons to, which I just told you."
"Fine if you're sure then I'll talk to Madhu aunty at dinner tonight. I'm sure she won't say no to me."
"OK bye," Piya said.
...
Alina's House
Alina had told Chand and Haseena that she had reformed and no longer wanted power after Abhay left her. They pretended to believe her so that they could stay on speaking terms. Haseena met Alina regularly in an attempt to find out her hidden motives.
"So you joined Mount College?" Haseena asked her one evening over a meeting at her house.
"Yeah," Alina replied.
"So I take it your stay is not temporary?"
"Of course not, I will be staying here for a few years."
"OK I must leave now," Haseena said finally as she was unable to extract any information from her.
How foolish of you Haseena to think that I would let slip anything, Alina thought, as she watched her leave. She closed her eyes. Just a few more days and the vampires would be under her control, which reminded her she had to give Panchi her dose of torture.
...
Dobriyal House
After dinner, Piya was walking back and forth in the lawn. Sid came out and rushed towards her with a smile.
"Aunty has agreed," he informed her.
"Really?" She asked and when he nodded, she hugged him. "Thank you so much Sid."
She let go and apologized for being rude on the phone.
"Now listen to me carefully," he said seriously. "If Abhay is indeed a murderer then you're putting yourself in danger by working against him. So avoid being alone with him and keep me informed about everything."
"Don't worry Sid, I can look after myself."
"But Piya, you're my responsibility now because I convinced aunty to let you do this job so if anything happens to you then I won't be able to forgive myself."
"I understand."
"And if you don't find any proof against him then you'll quit this job, OK?"
"Yeah, of course I will."
"Sid, Piya," Madhu called from inside. "Tea's ready."
"Let's go," Sid said and they headed inside.
Piya stopped and started to think about Sid. Whenever she was in some problem he always helped her. He always supported her like a true friend. He was an angel. She smiled as she saw Sid inside trying to make Misha smile.
