Part 2
He drove through the deserted road, past the wilderness at maddening speed. The trees and the woods raced past him in a blur. If only could the unwanted feelings in life race past in a blur, he thought wistfully. She wanted him to smile. He laughed at the irony of it. He was one person who was intent on making life hell for her and she wanted him to smile. He'd always known that she was a crazy woman. But did she know that she was asking for the impossible? He had no reason to smile. The smile was a luxury of the children of the light and he wasn't one of them. Theirs were two different realms separated by eons. If the rainbow was the smile of the heavens, the smile was the rainbow of the face, the human soul. And he was a soulless, heartless creature. Their whole kind. And he didn't know how had she managed to enmesh her life so thoroughly with his. Try how hard he may, he couldn't deny the fact that he was in love with her. He laughed cynically. Love? Could a corpse fall in love? Was it even possible? Even though he knew that his heart had stopped beating over a hundred and fifty years ago, he couldn't deny the fact that he felt for her. But it had to end there. Theirs wasn't a union destined; it definitely was not a match made in heaven. He had to convince himself hard to believe that. And he'd managed to do that but she had crumbled all his carefully erected defenses. He had been horrified when despite knowing the fact, knowing everything about him; she'd claimed to love him. Her love was pure. She loved him truly and hence had accepted him with all that he was. He had been overwhelmed. He'd still insisted on a safe distance between the two. Life had been sweet then, until Siddharth and Maithli came by... He didn't want to think about that, he didn't want to go there because that way lay pain, deception and betrayal... and his greatest loss. The reason Pia Dobriyal had conveniently forgotten one year of her life; the one year he'd spent with her. Because he'd wanted her to... That way he could ensure that she was safe.
The car suddenly rocked and buckled and Abhay felt a heavy weight on the rooftop. He didn't have to see to know what had caused the car to jerk so violently. A deep howl confirmed his thoughts as he brought the car to a sudden halt sending the object on the car top hurtling ahead like a huge mass of cotton wool and fur. In barely a tenth of a second, Abhay was out of the car and facing the worst enemy of his kind. The werewolf howled, his eyes spitting fire. Abhay recognised this one. He was the son of the tribal elder; the brother of the new leader of the pack. The younger puppy, he smirked. They went about amongst the humans by the name of the Khuranas. Neil Khurana was a temperamental creature, way too hot-headed even for his species. He didn't go by the book at all. He preferred to live life in his own style and annihilating the enemy at all costs was his motto in life. It was a respectable gesture towards the clan, according to Abhay, but only if the dog had some sense to go along. More often than not, his actions created problems for the pack than lessen them and if Jeh Khurana wanted to prove himself a successful leader, capable of handling the pack efficiently, then the dog'd have to make sure he did something about his puppy brother. For one, Neil never did a check on the favorableness of the situation, and his timing was bad.
The werewolf growled ferociously as he dug his paws in the earth and clawed the earth with his front paw. Abhay didn't have to tell himself to act. His innate instincts of survival and defence, in practice since the past 150 years, took over and his fangs erupted on their own, his eyes turning an icy blue. He ducked out of the way with an agility that was his forte, as the wolf flew through the air to pounce on his prey. Abhay slapped the wolf out of the way, sending him to land twenty feet away on the forest floor. The animosity between the Raichands and the Khuranas ran deep into the annals of history and it wasn't merely a case of personal rivalry, but a quest for survival between the vampire and the werewolf. Neil pounced on Abhay and managed to take him down with him this time. What followed next was a tangle of flesh and fur on the forest floor as each tried to inflict maximum damage on the other. While Neil tried his best to penetrate his fangs in Abhay's skin, Abhay tried to make sure that the dog didn't remain fit for transformation for at least a week. Neil was fighting a losing battle against Abhay's strength but his ego was too colossal to accept defeat. In what seemed to be a last attempt, he howled and went for the kill, but Abhay grabbed him by the throat and hurled him into the wilderness where he landed against a massive tree. Gasping for breath, Neil emerged in his human form, however, not ready to give up yet.
"Abhay Raichand, don't think you're gonna walk alive from here," Neil challenged. "A leech like you cannot be permitted to live."
Abhay rolled his eyes and said lazily, "Do you think you're up for it tonight, dog?"
Neil fumed realizing that the leech was speaking the truth. He didn't have any strength remaining in him tonight. He was weak, but he wouldn't accept it. Time stilled as the duo stared at each other; Neil with eyes that depicted the raging inferno burning within him and Abhay, will cool indifference. His arrogance stirred a fire within Neil, a burning desire to hurt Abhay Raichand in the most painful way possible. His eyes darted to Abhay's left as a movement on the highway caught his attention. He narrowed his eyes and then smirked. With a victorious howl, he leapt into the air and transforming into the werewolf that he was, bounded towards the highway with renewed vigour. Abhay spun around, a sinking feeling settling in his gut.
"No!" he thundered, but he already knew, he was late; Abhay Raichand, the fastest of all creatures to have walked the earth had been too slow to act this time.
"Long live Abhay Raichand!" Neil hooted and disappeared into the darkness, his chilling laughter echoing eerily through the silent night.
Abhay sped to the spot beside his car where she stood and gathered her in his arms before she hit the ground.
"Pia, no!" he whispered as he sagged to the floor with her in his arms.
She was breathing heavily, her body was heavily scarred in many places and fresh blood oozed out of the wounds. A burning sensation started at the back of his throat and his senses heightened as the smell of fresh human blood filled his nostrils. The vampire in him fought to escape and relish the delightful treat that welcomed him but the human proved to be stronger, for he restrained the beast and curbed his desires and concentrated on the lithe body in his arms.
No, he couldn't let Pia die.
"Abhay," she said hoarsely as her hand sought his face. Abhay guided her hand to his face and held it there.
"Everything will be okay, Pia. Nothing will happen to you," Abhay said clearly, trying to console himself more than her. Neil knew what importance Pia held in Abhay's life and he'd taken advantage of her presence there. The dog never played fair.
"Abhay, there's hardly anything you can do..." Pia said.
There is, a voice said in his head.
No! Abhay said and tried to tamp it down.
C'mon Abhay, that way, both of you get what you want, the voice urged.
Yes, but I can never wish Pia to the darkness of this world, NO!
"Abhay..." Pia's voice interrupted his thoughts.
"I know, Pia, I need to get you to the hospital, fast," he said, digging in his pockets for his cell phone.
"No, Abhay, I can feel it. My time here is over..."
"Stop it, Pia!" he said fiercely.
"Abhay, why does it matter to you?" she whispered.
He looked at her wistfully and gave a sad smile.
"So even in her last moments, Pia Dobriyal knows how to get her way, eh?" said Abhay.
"Don't evade my question, Abhay. If you have ever loved me, you will tell me the truth," Pia replied feebly.
He looked at her then, his gaze bearing into hers and for the first time since she'd returned from Paris, she saw something unexpected on his face. She saw emotions. At this moment, Abhay Raichand was as vulnerable as he could be and she could vow that no one had even seen a vulnerable Abhay Raichand. The cold mask that he wore to veil his feelings had disappeared now. She saw pain and fear warring with concern. She saw love mirrored in the depths of his deep blue eyes.
"Abhay..?" She asked.
He blinked and looked away, then he said quietly, "You don't know, Pia, how much it matters to me. You don't know what you are to me. You don't know the change you've brought about in me. Pia, Abhay Raichand was a monster before, and you Pia, you are the one who taught him to be a human. You are the one who loved him and taught him to love, again."
His hand was caressing her hair, gently and Pia was rendered speechless at the pain in his voice. His tender gesture baffled her, and yet, the feeling of being cared for, so, by Abhay unfurled a certain warmth with her. To die in Abhay's arms was a thought that had never crossed her mind. And if she were to die this way, she would be the happiest woman on the planet.
"Pia, you are the spark that lights up my dark world. You are the rainbow of my life. To think of my life without you is like worse than... death. I love you, Pia. I always have and-"
"Then why run away from me all this time?" she asked painfully. "Why pretend to hate me?"
A heavy sigh escaped him as he continued, "Because you and I were never meant to be. Our lives are different, our worlds are different. Our lives were not even meant to collide, but they did and you entangled yourself so thoroughly with me, that there was no going back. Yet, I wanted you to... I could not afford to ruin your life. You deserved much better than me, Pia..."
"So you took the decision alone... But I still don't understand, WHY? Why Abhay? What world would come to an end if we did come together? You're not making sense, you know... I want to know the truth, Abhay. I know you're keeping something back. What is it Abhay?" Pia asked vehemently and Abhay could see her fiery spirit alive as ever. And with it, the startling realisation that it was going to be extinguished soon; never to be rekindled. His Pia was soon going to another realm, leaving him to battle his way through his undead life alone for a thousand years to come.
Pia saw tears trickle down his face as she waited expectantly for a reply. She was causing him pain, she knew, but she had to know what had prevented Abhay from making his true feelings known to her.
She wanted the truth, and he couldn't tell her that. "Pia, I do not deserve your love. I'm someone you're supposed to hate with all your being. Even in this moment, you lie here because of me, I am responsible for this," he gestured to her weak form lying in his arms. Hate me, Pia, for what I am. For what your life has become due to me..."
Pia clamped a hand around his mouth and said, "I can never hate you, Abhay. NEVER!"
His eyes held hers and silence prevailed a long moment as she searched in the depths of his eyes for what he held back.
"Abhay, Misha told me that we were together until before my accident and all was well between us then. So that means surely neither of us had issues with being together. Then why did you disappear after my accident? Tell me, Abhay. I want to know..."
Abhay knew that though he didn't want to bring her face-to-face with the monstrous reality of his life, again, he owed her the truth. She deserved to die in peace. He bent down and placed a lingering kiss on her forehead and then said, "You'll have all your answers after this and also, hate me."
She stared at him quizzically as he placed a hand on her forehead and then, like a blinding flash of light, it all came back. The past one year that had been erased of her memory. The first time she'd seen Abhay, the first time they'd met, the first time he'd saved her, the first time they'd talked, the first time they'd argued, the first time they'd come close to each other, and the first time they'd accepted their feelings for each other. Everything came clear in her mind; Siddharth, Maithli, the werewolf and the vampire!
"You!" she suddenly gasped, enraged.
Abhay looked at her then, amazed that the hatred and anger had finally taken over, had finally come. She yelled, "I hate you, Abhay Raichand!" and with grim satisfaction and pain he realised, this was what he'd always been asking her for.
"I hate you, but not for what you are, rather, for what you did to me!" She was pale now, her body devoid of the blood that now pooled around her. But her voice held strength.
"Pia..?" he asked baffled.
"Abhay, how did you think that I would be happy without you? Why did you think forgetting you would be in my best interests? Abhay, I loved you even after knowing who you are... and I still do," she trailed off.
"I was only protecting you, Pia," he said and Pia could hear the faint note of pain and longing in his voice.
"Abhay..."
Her body suddenly wracked with a convulsive shudder and Pia gasped clutching her ribs. Her breath was now coming in hitches as she struggled to breathe.
"Pia, no!" he gasped.
"Aa-bhay, pl-ease, I don't wa-want to die."
"I'm sorry, Pia, I can't do anything," he said as tears now ran unchecked down his face.
"No Abhay, on-only you can... hel-lp me," she said.
"No Pia, I cannot do anything," he said feircely.
"C'mon Abhay, d-do itt. You c-can..." she pleaded.
"Abhay, yo-you of all pe-ople shou-ld know that love-love ov-erco-comes all. Af-t-er you-r tryst wi-th Mai-Maithli, afterrr this pa-sst one year, know tha-t we arrr-e destined tob-be together..."
"Pia... I cannot damn you to an eternal hell," he said vehemently.
"Hell would be sweeter with you..." her words were clear but barely audible and Abhay stared at her in growing panic. There was no time. These were her last moments in his arms. Her eyes mirrored hope, trust, faith and love...
He looked away. He couldn't bear to face her anymore. He felt her fingers brush across his hands.
"You know you want this Abhay... Then why the hesitation? We both want this," she said with a broken smile.
His heart clenched at the sight of her.
"Pia... I may not be able to stop," he said in lame attempt.
She smiled sardonically and said, "Really? Your control is far better than that." To prove her point she looked at the pool of blood that surrounded them.
Her pulse was feeble now.
Abhay looked at her a long moment and then did the unthinkable. He brought his face close to her jugular, feeling her heady scent fill his nostrils, and pierced his fangs in the supple skin.
The pain that shot through her was torturous but she was too numb to really feel it, for lack of sensation or for thought of what she would now have, she didn't know... Suddenly, she found a blackness steal over her senses, a fuzziness that turned everything into a misty haze. Her last thought was what if Abhay had been late? Then, through the haziness Abhay's face swam before her again, a serene calm resided there and a smile lingered. A smile that started at his lips and extended to his eyes lighting up his face. His eyes crinkled with a light that warmed her heart. An identical smile crossed her face as the darkness took over clouding everything. She appeared a serene, satisfied, content soul as she lay lifeless in Abhay's arms. Pia Dobriyal had closed her eyes to this world happy and content, her last wish fulfilled; the blossom of her ultimate desire tucked in her heart's bosom.
P.S: As per the title, this OS is now complete. But if you guys wish to know what happened after Abhay pierced his fangs into Pia's throat; was he too late or in time. Did she join his world or not, I can do a short part. So, do let me know what you want. But remember! It can be either ways: If Abhay was late, it means Pia died. But if he was in time, it means Pia also turned into a vampire. Now, you're not aware what's going on in my mind, so make your choice accordingly! 😉
Cheers!
Tia
