Part 4
He was watching her sleeping. She was even more beautiful in the aftermath than usual. They had made love for most of the night. They both fell asleep in the early hours of the morning. But he was awoken by her putting her legs on him and moaning in her sleep. He had an opportunity to just watch her at leisure. He knew that this marriage was getting too much for her. But just as desperate as she was to get out of it, he was as desperate for it to last. He had had scheduled another business trip and after that they would have to talk. He was starting to think that he should give her some space. Maybe for a while. But they could talk when he got back. And he got out of bed and dressed and packed to go quietly as not to wake her.
She woke up and he was gone. She got up to shower but she was not feeling well at all. She was dizzy. She was felt exhausted. She went to lie back down. It turned out she had a viral infection causing headaches, fever and exhaustion. Her mother called the doctor and he prescribed bed rest and anti-biotics.
He came home immediately when he heard of her illness.
"Has she been sleeping like this all the time?"
"Yes the doctor says that the infection took root because her immune system had been broken down due to mental and physical exhaustion and stress. She needs rest. The antibiotics are helping but she is barely eating."
"I will feed her when she wakes up."
He looked after her from then on. He fed her and saw that she got her meds and when her fever spiralled he wiped her down with a vinegar cloth.
"Yash, when did you come home?" she asked when she woke up after the fever broke.
"You've been sick for a week so I have been home for a while."
"Oh. I'm thirsty." she tried to get up.
"No. let me."
He got her the water.
"I am so tired."
"Then sleep."
"Will you stay?'
"Yes"
"Thank you, she said as she dozed off again.
From then on she still slept most of the time but there was no more fever and she was on the mend. He was there to look after her. He saw that she ate and had her meds. He made sure that he work was delegated as she was worried about that as well. He took her to the bathroom and brought her back from the bathroom even though she claimed to be able to do it herself. After 2 weeks she was back up and about. She started working from home again. Only then did her go back to the office but he didn't plan any trips.
She liked having him around and she liked having him care for her. But that came to an end soon. They were having supper in their bedroom one night when he broached the subject that she had forgotten.
"Aarti, I have spoken to Bauji. I would be ok for you to go to the USA for a couple of months to establish our offices there. It will only be for a couple of months.
"Oh, I thought you said ... Ok."
She was so disappointed. She had begun to think that he cared for her. Obviously she was wrong again. So she started once again to plan her chosen exile to the USA. It felt like dejavu.
He had told her that with a lot more calm than he felt. He just wanted her to be better. He didn't want her to be stuck here and be so stressed out that it affects her health. He didn't want her to go but he had to let her leave. Just as before. He hoped it would be for a couple of months. He was scared that once she left that she would never come back. But it was a risk he was willing to take for her Mental and Physical health.
He remembered the circumstances that caused her to leave before.
It was a rare occasion that they were out together. He was going to a party with one of his friends and she had asked if he could accompany him. Their parents thought it was a strange request as they never socialised together but they encouraged it as they wanted them to form a relationship. Little did they know that they already had a hot and heavy relationship? So he took her along and pretended to do so reluctantly. As soon as they were out of the view of their home, he pulled her in his arm and kept her there as he drove. She looked at him so lovingly as he drove and kissed him on his cheek.
Once at the party he suddenly felt insecure about his place in her life. She had gotten so much male attention and he could see that she was overwhelmed. He knew that Rhadha had sheltered her daughters a lot and Aarti was never really at this kind of party. She wore western clothes but what she wore compared to the other girls were very modest. But she was a breath of fresh air and the guys loved her. And she seemed to like the attention. He unfortunately could not stake his claim as their relationship was a secret. So he pretended to be an overprotective brother.
They didn't stay as late as he normally did. He told his friends she had a curfew. But he was livid. She hardly paid him any attention. She attempted to hold onto his arm in the car but he was rigid.
"Yash, is everything ok?"
He just nodded and looked stoically in front of him.
"Yash, please talk to me."
He stopped the car and looked at her angrily.
"'Was that necessary?"
"What?"
"To throw yourself on every man at the party. I was right there, Aarti."
"What do you mean? I wasn't doing that. I was just friendly."
"Too friendly"
"Baby, I love you. You know that."
"Do I, Aarti? Or am I just you way to an easy life."
She was silent.
"Nothing to say?" he asked.
"Why would you say that? I have always only loved you."
"Well that was what your role model, your mother, did with bauji. She probably used the same way that you did. Her body."
She slapped him.
"How dare you? Ma is not like that."
"And you? No denial there. I remember you saying that you would give up everything for me. Maybe I should just have read it as you want to live off me. You want a rich husband so you don't need to study or work."
"Take me home."
"I will take you to my house." he said and sped off.
She got out of the car.
"Aarti, if you really love me then prove it."
"How?"
"Convince your mother to leave my father."
"What?"
"If you love me, you will do it for me. And I will give you everything. Your life will be easy. I will do everything in my power to make you happy. You will have more money than you can imagine. I just want her out of my house."
"She's my mother. She is finely happy. Give her a chance Yash. Please. She's had a hard life. She deserves to be happy."
"Yes, she's had a hard life. Now she has it easy. She married a Scindiya."
"So what are we doing Yash. If you hate Ma and you think she is a gold digger. You think the same of me?"
"I don't mind. I will give you what you want."
"Yash I love you. I want only you. I want to marry you and spend the rest of my life with you."
"I'm sure you want to marry me. That would be great for you. You'd be set for life."
"Why are you saying all these things? Don't you love me?"
"I never said I did, did I? The only woman that I ever loved was my mother. She was loved me unconditionally. No one can take her place in my life. She would not have approved of a girl like you for me."
She looked totally devastated yet he didn't stop.
"She wanted someone that was sophisticated and of the same status as us. Someone that was honourable and pure, not like you."
She couldn't take it anymore. She fled to her room in tears.
Instant remorse hit him but he could not go after her now. He couldn't see her in so much pain and he couldn't allow him to be so vulnerable in front of her. Besides, everything he said was true.
He went to his room, took a shower and got into bed. Soon he heard his door open softly. She got onto the bed and started making love to him. It was the most passionate and beautiful experience that they had shared up to that point. They were both still breathing heavily when he heard her say.
"I am so sorry for anything I did to hurt you and make you angry. I know that you didn't mean what you said earlier. You only spoke out of anger. I love you. And I know you love me. In my heart of hearts, I know you love me. Please say it Yash. Please say you love me."
He merely pushed her away and went to the bathroom.
When he came back she was gone and the following morning at the breakfast table she announced that she had decided to go study in the USA. She had previously applied but decided to stay as she didn't want to be far away from her family.
"Are you sure my angel?"
"Yes, Ma."
"But you have never been away from home for long. And now you want to go away for years."
"It's about time I grow up I guess." she said.
"Well if you are sure, then I am fine with it. And you Ji?"
"If that is what you want beta, I will support you."
"Spending more money on them then Bauji? My mother would never have approved of a girl on her own in a foreign country. Who knows what she will get up to?"
He was livid that she would just leave like that.
Aarti had had enough. She had given him everything and was given only insults and a broken heart in return. She was done being his punching bag. She knew exactly where she stood with him now. She was angry too now.
She got up, slamming her hands on the table.
"Yes, we all know that your mother was a saint. She was just perfect and birthed a perfect son. It surprises me that you didn't jump in the funeral pyre when she died." she shouted.
"Aarti!" he shouted. Jumping to his feet too.
"What!"
"Don't you dare speak about my mother or I will ..."
"What will you do? Hit me? Hurt me?" It's too late she wanted to shout. It's already done.
He was shaking. He wanted to strangle her. Instead he pushed his chair and walked out.
She walked to her room.
They avoided each other as much as possible until she left. But when they did see each other, each encounter ended in confrontation with the two of them stomping off. She chose not to come home even for holidays. And when her course was finished she was head hunted due to her exceptional results. And she accepted a position. She did not want to go home and share a house with him. And the first day that she was back she ended up in his bed. Only to be humiliated and insulted by him again. And now they were married and she found herself in the exact same position as she was before. In love with this man and having to flee for her sanity.
But for a moment she thought that there was something. He cared for her when she was sick. Apparently he had even come home when he found out she was sick and taken over her care. But the moment she was better he suggested she leave. Yes, she brought up the subject and just when there was a glimmer of hope, it was shattered. She should have known better.
"Aarti, do you think that is the right thing to do? You are married now. Living apart when you are married is not a good thing. Please don't go." she had the discussion with her mother after they announced the job to the family.
"Ma, it's only a couple of months."
"The last time you stayed away for 4 years. Don't think I am oblivious to the tension between you and Yash. The answer is not to run away again. It didn't help the first time, it will not help now."
"Ma, you are reading too much into this."
"I know what a failed marriage is like Aarti. Let me help you darling. I know there is a future for you two. But right now I am so worried about where your relationship is headed. It is even affecting your health."
"I am fine Ma. Don't worry."
She walked away and the discussion was closed.
This time he was there to see her off at the airport. It was expected. She would have rather just have taken a cab. She had specifically asked her family if she could greet them at home. But bauji had insisted that Yash take her the airport. He helped her check in and waited till it was time for her to board. She got up when her flight was announced.
"Thank you Yash. Good bye."
He suddenly grabbed her arm.
"Aarti ..."
"Yes?"
"No ... nothing. Good bye."
She swallowed her tears and turned around and walked away.
He sat and waited for the he plane to leave. And he sat there for a long while after as well regretting letting her go with every fibre of his being.
He wanted to ask her to stay. But he knew she wouldn't stay. Not for him.
Yash had been trying to get a good match for Paradhi since the engagement day fiasco. Finally he decided on a guy that was willing to enter into marriage with her despite the whole scandal. His father and her mother approved and they were setting up the meeting. Then the day before the meeting Prateek burst into his office.
"Bhayia, you have to stop this."
"What are you talking about Prateek."
"The meeting with Pari's groom."
"Why"
"Because, I am in love with her and want to marry her."
"Since when?"
"Even before she was engaged the first time, but I didn't tell her then. I was so happy when the engagement was broken. Not happy about what you did to bhabhi but that Pari was not going to get married. This time I am not standing idly by while she get engaged to another man."
"Does she know how you feel? And do you know how she feels?"
"I confessed my feelings to her and she feels the same. Please bhayia. If you could marry bhabhi, then surely I can marry Pari."
"You are 100% sure this is what you want?"
"Yes, bhayia. More than anything. I know you don't like them but for me it is different. Since they came to our house, it is like I finally have a family. Ma loves us as much as her daughters and Bhabhi-di and Pari are so loving and caring, despite how they grew up. And they are honest and sincere. They are not like the people that move in our circles. I love all of them but I am in love with Pari. Please help me."
"Fine, Fine. Calm down. I will speak to Bauji and Paridhi's mother. I will call Rajeev's parents and cancel the meeting."
"Thank you, bhayia."
As expected his father agreed and his wife, though shocked was pleased. Paridhi and Prateek immediately went to her laptop and they skyped Aarti with their happy news. They would get engaged in 2 weeks and married a month later. He was standing at the room door listening to the conversation. Just hearing her voice made his heart race. He had only been in contact with her for work purposes for the last 3 months. Nothing personal was discussed and not mention of her return. But now she would be returning for the engagement.
He didn't care what was bringing her home, but she was coming home. And he was not letting her go again.
