Chapter 3

He arranged a private room for their anniversary dinner. She was dressed in a beautiful red saree, as if she was a bride again. He was in awe of her beauty. She looked shy now. She wasn't even shy on the wedding day. She was truly an enigma to him, even after a year of marriage, she still surprised him. If he believed in love, she would probably be the one that he would fall in love with. But as it was, their relationship was ideal for him. She didn't make demands on his emotions and she was the perfect lover and she was a very good friend. She was even a great bahu. He was very proud of the way she had fit in with his family. He hoped that she would like his gift. He wanted her to be happy. And he was sure that the gift would make her happy. And when they got home they would see doctors as the fact that she was not pregnant yet was bothering her, but it wasn't bothering him. He was perfectly happy with things as is. But her happiness was important to him.

"You look stunning. Baby. Like you my bride all over again."

"Thank you. You don't look like my prince today. You look like a hot fashion model in that suit."

"Why thank you."

"I have to be careful, else someone will steal you away from me. I can't compete with those models an actresses that you used to date."

"Never, I am yours forever. You just know to keep me happy" he said meaningfully.

"Now shall we eat Mrs. Scindiya?"

"Of course."

"They ate and chatted happily and after dessert she asked."

"So do I have to beg for my gift? You have already forgotten that I gave you yours, it was so long ago."

"Forget? The best gift that I have ever received, never."

She blushed,

"Ok, you can have yours now" he took a box out of his jacket pocket. It looked like a pen box.

"Happy anniversary honey."

"Ooh, what is this? She opened it excitedly. Her face fell.

"A key? To what?"

"I have had the pool house converted in a studio for you. Your parents told me that you always wanted to be an artist but they couldn't afford to send your to art school and that you rather studied business management to help run their business. So I want you to follow your dream. I want you to enrol full time at a college or university of your choice for you art studies and pursue that as a career."

"What? I don't understand. You want me to study full time?"

"Yes."

"Thank you so much Yash, your gift is very thoughtful but I can't. Bauji needs me to help run this business. He can't do it without me. So I can't accept your offer. But I can use the studio in my spare time."

"Your fathers business will be fine. I have bought a share of it and he has enough cash flow to carry on now and I will help run it with him."

"What? You bought into my father's business. What is your portion? How much did you buy?"

"50%"

"What?! You did this without consulting me? How could you?"

"Aarti, I thought you'd be happy. Your family will be taken care of and you can follow you dream."

"No Yash. You are trying to take over my life. What you did is unacceptable. I can look after myself. Since I started helping bauji in the business, the company has been doing much better. I was busy turning the business around. I could have made a success of it."

"I don't doubt that. But I thought ..."

"You thought that I need a man to take care of me. Well I don't. My family is not rich like yours, so I had to learn to take care of myself and them and was doing it well. Without you. In this year that we have been married have I ever asked you for anything? No, because I don't need anything from you. I don't need to be saved by you. I am not a damsel in distress. I am a capable independent woman."

"I know that. Aarti, why are you acting like this? I was just giving you what I thought would make you happy. What's the big deal anyway, I am your husband and I bought into your fathers business. It still stays in the family. You act like I'm trying to steal your fathers business.

"Yash, it is a big deal. Don't you think I know how people look at me when I am with you? Like I am a gold digger. Like I am the luckiest girl in the world because a man like you deigned to marry a plain, middle class girl like me. You might be oblivious to it, but I am not. I am painfully aware of it. Thank goodness that your family as accepted me for who I am and loves me. I won't take charity from you."

"It's not charity Aarti. It's business. I will be sharing in the profits as well."

"I will speak to bauji to give your money back. Thanks but no thanks,"

"So there is nothing between us. Just sex is that it. We are not family not friends, just two people living together and having sex. Thanks for clearing that up."

"You know that's not true."

"Did you listen to yourself Aarti? That's exactly what you said. Don't forget we married for the same reasons. Because our parents wanted it and you asked me if we could be friends and I thought we were. And you are the best lover I have ever had. And plain? Have you looked at yourself in the mirror Aarti? You are gorgeous. Most likely the people are just admiring your beauty. I can't take my eyes or hands off you. And I also see men staring at you. And yes I get jealous because you are my wife, but mostly I fell pride. Pride that you a beautiful accomplished woman with a good heart. You always aim to please everyone and keep everyone happy. I merely wanted to do the same for you. But clearly I misread our relationship."

He walked out of the room.

She sat back down on the chair in confusion. She sat there for a long while and eventually went back to their room.

He was there packing.

"I have managed to change our flights back to Bhopal tonight still."

"She sat down on the bed."

"Yash please try and understand."

"The flight is in an hour so you best get done packing, else we will miss the flight or else you can stay here and spend the rest of the time here. The room is booked for 3 more days."

"No, I won't stay without you."

"Then get done."

It was evident that things had changed between them when they got home, but no one dared ask. Her father refused to sell the shares back to Yash and said that he was happy with the deal. He was happy that she could for once have a stress free life, but little did he know what they whole selling part of the business caused in her life. She stopped working and was at home full time now and she hated it. She loved her family but she was not housewife material. She was so bored and she didn't want to take up his offer of studying either, but she did use the studio to occupy herself and she enjoyed it.

Their relationship regressed to one where they only spoke to each other when needed. They avoided each other as much as possible. He worked late and when he was home over the weekend she spent the time in the studio or with Vendant and Vedhika, once again starting to sleep in there room often. She really loved them and it was almost 2 months after their anniversary and she still wasn't pregnant. And it was pointless now to find out if there were any problems. Especially since their marriage might not last much longer. But she really wanted a baby, his baby. Her heart broke for the loss of her love, the breakdown of her marriage and her empty womb. For everyone she pretended to be her happy jovial self, but she spent many hours crying but never when anyone was around, mostly in the studio, because no one came there.

When he married her, he had expected nothing from their relationship but she had given him so much. And when he lost her, he felt a deep sense of loss. Not just the intimacy but the idea of future with her, a family. Now there was nothing anymore. He was glad that he didn't believe in love because he would have been hurt even more. He had distanced himself from her completely. He only tried to make her happy and she accused him of all sorts of things. Things that he couldn't even fathom. She was angry that she wanted to help her and her parents. That he wanted her to live her dream. It was evident that whatever it was they had, had no substance and therefore could not survive. It was fine with him. He was used to being alone. He didn't need her. He had spent so much time on her and with her that he lost sight of his own dreams and goals. That is what he lived for now, his work and his financial and professional success. He started an aggressive marketing campaign to get their company on the international map. This took most of his time. He didn't have time to think about her or what could have been. He was focused again.

She come from her parents' house that day and he cousin was there. She was very excited to share the news about her pregnancy. Aarti was happy for her but she was distraught about her own situation. She excused herself quickly and left for home. It started to rain as she was driving home. It was quite a distance from the driveway to the studio and she got soaked. She just fell down sobbing on the couch in her wet clothes and that is how she fell asleep.

They were used to her not coming to dinner sometimes when she was painting so no one looked for her. He didn't worry that she didn't come to bed as she often didn't sleep in their room. It was only the next day at dinner that he mother in law became worried.

"Yash, where is Aarti bahu?"

"I don't know Ma. She is at home with you, how am I supposed to know?"

"I haven't seen her since breakfast yesterday."

"Her car is here." He said. "I will go check if she is in the studio" His heart constricted in fear. Fear that something happened to her and if not that, fear that she might have left him.

"Aarti, Aarti" he called as he entered the studio.

There was no reply. Then he saw her lying on the coach. He rushed to her and she was burning up with fever."

"Aarti" he said again.

Her eyes opened and fell shut again.

He picked her up and carried her to the house.

"Ma, get a doctor please. There is something wrong with Aarti."

They got the doctor there quickly but she had to be admitted to hospital as she was close to contracting pneumonia. He stayed with her. She was discharged after 2 days but was instructed to have bedrest. He looked after her most of the time although she didn't want it.

He had gone to fetch fresh water while Vhidhi was sitting with her and couldn't help hearing their conversation when he came back.

"Aarti, why did you do that? Why didn't you come in the house and get the wet clothes off."

Tears started to fill her eyes.

"Bhabhi, I didn't think. My cousin was at Ma Bauji's house. She is three months pregnant. I am happy for her, don't get me wrong but why couldn't I fall pregnant Bhabhi. I want a baby so badly. I see how blessed you are with Vendant and Vedhika. I only want a little baby if my own."

Vhidhi took her in her arms.

"Don't worry Aarti, you two are stull practically newlyweds. It will still happen."

"I don't thinks so Bhabhi"

"Why?"

"Things haven't been good between Yash and I. I don't know if our marriage will survive."

"Don't say that Aarti. You two are so good for each other."

"No Bhabhi, I am realistic. Didn't you notice that he didn't worry that I was gone for so long. He is used to me not being in our bed. Doesn't that tell you anything Bhabhi? I think I want to go home. I can't stay here anymore, not like this." she sobbed in Vidhi's arms.

He turned around and went to the office. He just down in the chair. His heart went out to her. He wished he could make it better for her. He wished he would go back to the time before he decided to buy into her father's company. He wished that he could give her the baby she desperately wanted. And now she wants to leave him. How could he! How could just leave he to sleep in the studio for a whole night and a day without checking. He was to blame for her condition. He didn't know how to begin to make things right. He couldn't and wouldn't ask his father in law for money back and he couldn't just give him back his shares. That would make her even angrier. He was clueless where to go from here. In his attempt to make her happy he had made both of them miserable.

Eventually he went back the bedroom and she was asleep again. He touched her and it seemed that her fever had broken. He started to work on his laptop while she was sleeping. He heard her get up from bed eventually.

"Where are you going?"

"I'm thirsty."

"I will get you water."

"I feel much better now Yash. I can do it myself"

"Yes Aarti, I know you can do everything yourself. Yet look how you ended up, hospitalised and almost contracting pneumonia. Now I have to take off work to look after you. Just get back to bed."

She sat down and looked at him liked a scared child.

He went to pour the water and when he gave it to her, he noticed she was crying.

"I'm sorry, Aarti. I didn't meant to shout at you. But sometimes you are so stubborn."

"I'm not the only one that's stubborn" she mumbled through her tears.

"Excuse me?" he asked.

"Nothing." she said.

"I will get you something to eat."

"I'm not hungry."

"Nevertheless you will eat to take your meds."

"Ok"

He left and poked her tongue out at him as he was walking out the door, just as he turned around. She quickly turned her head away from his frowny face.

He came back with the food and she really wasn't hungry at all.

"You can eat yourself or I can feed you. Stop behaving like a child. As soon as you are well you can go home."

"What?'

"I heard what you said to Bhabhi. So when you are well you can go home."

It was with great difficulty that she controlled her tears and continued eating.

Finally, she said.

"I need the bathroom. Can I go or do want to do that for me too?"

"Go"

"Can I take shower?"

"Ok"

She locked the door, ran the shower and started crying so he wouldn't hear.

Soon he knocked on the door to find out if she was ok,

"I'll be out in a moment"

When she was out, she said

"I feel fine Yash, I can go home tomorrow."

He looked at her.

"If you are fine, you can go tomorrow. Once you are home, Aarti then what happens?"

"What do you mean?"

"With us."

"What do you want to happen?"

"I am not asking you to leave Aarti, it's what you want. Are planning on coming back or not?"

"We are living in the same house and we are not together anymore so what difference does it make whether I stay here or there. For all intents and purposes were are living like strangers, so I suppose I am not coming back. You can decide whether you want a divorce or not, it doesn't matter to me. I won't get married again."

"I see. I have put clean bedding on the bed, you can lie down again. I will talk to the driver to take you when you want to go tomorrow. I will talk my parents and yours tonight."

She nodded and he left the room.

He only came back to shower and get into bed. She wasn't tired because of her nap earlier and he was just restless. He was surprised to hear her say.

"Yash, please make love to me one last time."

"No Aarti, you are not well."

"Please, Yash.

"I don't think it's a good idea." he said.

"Ok" she said but he could not resist her silent sobs.

He moved over to her and turned her around to face him. He wiped the tears from her eyes and kissed her tenderly. Their lovemaking was sweet and tender and slow, as if they wanted to savour the sensation forever. Their kisses and caresses had to last forever, it only happened once that night and it lasted a long time before they both found release and afterwards, she just lay in his arms till she fell asleep. He couldn't sleep. He just stared at her. He was hoping for a miracle. That somehow she would decide to stay and he was hoping that finally his seed had taken root inside her. To give her the baby that would make her happy and that would bind her to him forever. He wanted to ask her to stay afterwards, but he couldn't. The words would just not leave his mouth. He just held her tighter as silent tears fell from his eyes.

When she woke up in the morning he was gone. She didn't want to go, she closed her eyes and breathed deeply. She could still smell him, feel him on her, next to her, inside of her. She was hoping that at last their passion would bear the fruit she so desperately craved. She wanted a baby, she wanted a part of him to be with her forever.

"Bahu, you can't leave like this."

"It's for the best Ma, for both of us."

"But you were so happy."

"Please Ma, you making it harder for me. Good bye and thank you for everything."

"Bahu, I know you will be back home again. And you and my son will be happy and you will be happy and you will have the baby we all so desperately want."

"I hope so Ma."

It was about 2 months later that he got a call from her. She was sobbing.

"Yash, Please I need you. Please come."

"Where are you?"

"At Bhopal hospital, please hurry."

He hurried and he found her parents outside the ward that she had told him to come.

"Ma Bauji, what happened?"

They were crying.

"She's inside. She only wants you."

He was so afraid.

"Yash" she said as she saw him.

"I lost him. I lost our baby. I lost him. I want him back, I want him back" she sobbed. He went to her and they wept in each other's arms.
