Part Thirteen

Prashant returned to the room after a lapse of time, he moved slowly towards her with a grin on his face. Aarti shuddered in fear and she just froze at the spot unable to move as if her feet were bound to the floor. When he was inches away from her, she just closed her eyes fearing the worst. In one swift motion he pulled out the chain from her neck.

"This will be useful for money," Prashant said as he dangled the chain in front of her. Aarti could only silently weep.

Back at home, everyone was perplexed about Aarti's disappearance. Yash saw her text message at noon and when he tried calling her it went unanswered, he thought she must be caught up with some housework. He dialled her number again after half hour still no answer, he began to worry and later when he called home no one knew where she was.

Yash was worried sick, he left office and searched for her at the clinic he dropped her off. All he got from them was that she had left many hours ago.

"Aarti...where are you?" Yash's mind wandered.

He looked around a few more places to no avail. He called Mansi to check about Aarti's whereabouts but she told him she was at work and Aarti did not contact her. Feeling exhausted and unable to think, he went back home. Day turned to night and Yash was concerned about Aarti's safety. He tried calling her phone again and finally after a few tries someone picked it, his relief was short-lived.

He couldn't believe the conversation he had with a man who claimed to be Aarti's husband, he absolutely went numb.

"Why would she leave me? I loved her more than anything," he said to himself.

Yash covered this fact from everyone, none of them even knew Aarti's past. The only reply he could give was that she was gone which raised more questions.

"Gone, what you mean, she is gone? Where has she gone? And why would she go away, did you say anything to her Yash," Radhama badgered him for answers.

Yash walked to his room feeling defeated, he wished he had answers to all their questions. He sat on his bed and looked around, all he saw were pictures of her smiling.

"My Aarti wouldn't do this to me," he shook his head in disbelieve.

He was jolted when his phone rang, he quickly picked up the phone in case it was Aarti again alas it was Mansi. He told her what had transpired, Mansi was shocked.

"Aarti back to Prashant, that cannot be, I will go and see her tomorrow."

After the call Yash went through many phases of emotions, he was sad one minute and angry the next. In his anger, he threw Aarti's clothes out of the cupboard to the floor then the next instance regretted his move and picked them up and put them back.

"She will be back," Yash said hopeful.

-------------------------------------------

"Yashji...I cannot run anymore. You go without me," Aarti said as she struggled to breath.

"No...we will go together or we will die together," Yash held her tightly and slowed to keep the pace with Aarti. Devoid of energy, she missed her steps and fell down.

"Yassh...," she called out and Yash turned around only to find the distance between them widening.

He screamed aloud, "Aarti...run,,,,I'm here." He woke up in cold sweat and realized he dreamt about her.

"What if she being held against her will?" He wanted to call Mansi and ask her to take him to Prashant's place but when he looked at the clock it was 3am, it wouldn't be right to wake her up at this hour.

He didn't sleep a wink as he kept staring at the clock as minutes passed to hours. As soon as morning came he quickly got ready and drove to Mansi's place. She understood his predicament and knowing Aarti's history with Prashant, she was concerned about Aarti too so both of them went to Prashant's place.

Once they were almost near, Mansi said, "Yashji...stop the car here, I will go to the house first, you wait here for me."

Mansi walked to the house and knocked on the door, no one opened it, she banged on the door harder until she heard footsteps approaching.

"What do you want? Go away..." Prashant said in an angry tone.

"I came to see Aarti. Where is she?" Mansi answered not easily intimidated.

"She is not here."

"Don't lie, she is here. I won't leave until I have seen her safe," Mansi said.

He scratched his head perhaps thought a while and said, "Ok...you wait here."

He warned Aarti not to say a word or she will pay a heavy price, she just nodded obviously unwilling to risk, more importantly the wellbeing of the child she was carrying.

He instructed Aarti to open the door ajar as to leave just about enough space so she could speak to Mansi and not arise any suspicion, Prashant took cover behind the door.

"Are you ok? Aarti," Mansi asked.

"I'm fine, I will talk to you later," Aarti spoke softly while blinking back her tears. Mansi walked back to the car.

"So...Is Aarti there...," he started to ask, what he really wanted to know was whether she was there on her free will or not but dared not in fear of her answer.

"Yeah...I spoke to her, she said she is fine," Mansi replied, Yash lowered his face to hide his anguish.

After recollecting his thoughts he said, "In that case there is no reason to be here, let's go home."

"Hold-on, things are not as simple as it seems, it doesn't make sense why would Aarti go back to him," Mansi reasoned.

She added, "Earlier she had no one to run to so she was stuck with him even though he treated her like shit, now she has you and your family."

Yash was feeling more disorientated, he said, "You said Aarti will never return to him but here she is... I don't understand anything."

"Prashant was an abusive drunk, Aarti was totally dependent on him because she thought no else will love her so she stayed as long as she could until it became intolerable."

Yash was shocked. "I had no idea...she never told me anything about her past, why didn't she?"

His mind drifted to the night where he had attempted to make love to her in his drunken stupor, no wonder she reacted that way, she was scared.

"There is something else you need to know, Aarti had a miscarriage because of him."

He got out of his car and dashed towards the house, Mansi ran behind him to stop him.

"I can't let her be alone with that man one more minute, what if he hurts her again," Yash spoke with rage.

Mansi caught up with him, she said, "Yash...don't act in haste, it might cause harm to Aarti, we will wait till he goes out of the house then we will go in, find her and bring her out."

Yash pondered over it, it wasn't the best laid plan but he didn't want to put Aarti's life at jeopardy.

"Ok... "

They sat back in the car and kept a close watch on the house. After waiting for what seemed like eternity, they saw him exiting from the house. They let him walk some distance before they moved swiftly to the house. Mansi stood guard outside while Yash jumped in through an open window.

Yash stumbled upon a room which was locked from the outside, he called out Aarti's name.

Aarti instantly recognised his voice, "Yashji...please help me."

Yash breathed a sigh of relief, "Don't worry, I'll get you out from there." He took a heavy object he found in the house to break the lock and managed to get it opened.

He flung the door open and Aarti ran into his arms, clinging to him. She held on to him even as they escaped unscathed from there. Yash dropped Mansi at her home, he thanked her profusely and lastly they headed home.

"I thought I would never see you again," Yash said while he touched her face with his thumb. Aarti smiled faintly.

"Yashji...what if he finds me again," Aarti asked obviously worried that this incident would be repeated.

"What can we do? We need to put you under house-arrest," Yash replied in a jest but he realised that she had a valid point. Something needed to be done.

"Aarti, no one at home knows about this, we will fake it saying that we had a fight and you ran to Mansi's place."

Everyone was glad to see Aarti back and warned her to never pull this again. Palak's anger with Aarti took much longer to subdue. Yash had a talk with her, told her that a bad man took her mama from them. She believed him and forgave her. Back alone in their room, Aarti broke the news about her pregnancy to Yash. He picked her up and spun her in circles, basking in the double happiness.

"Aarti...I'm so glad you came into my life." Aarti smiled widely.

"And have I told you how much I love you," Yash continued.

"Ummm..."

"Better still let me show you."
