Part Ten
The next morning, Aarti slept through and didn't rise even when the alarm rang incessantly instead it woke Yash up. Her back was facing him and he gently tapped her shoulder, no response later with some force but still she didn't move. By then he was alarmed and jumped out of the bed to move to her side of the bed. She was so still, his heart skipped a beat. He touched her face and it felt warm, he breathed a sigh of relief as for a second he dreaded the worst had happened.
Yash went to look for some kind of medications, for that he had to open almost all the cabinet drawers till he found them. It dawned on him, how much dependent he was on her and how he was taking everything for granted. While in the kitchen his eyes fell on the tray of food, it was evident to him the reason why Aarti had fallen sick, the reason was him. He recalled her last word to him, please come home early.
"She was fasting and she did it for my sake...what is my excuse?" he was angry with himself but decided to punish himself later, Aarti's health comes first. He took milk with the tablets to the room.
"Aarti...Aarti...take this tablets, your fever will go down," he called out and said softly.
Aarti did what he said without protest and slept again, he covered her with blanket and went to Palak's room. He told Palak to get ready for school and later he sent her to school. Once back to their house, he checked on Aarti's condition and the fever seemed to have gone down a bit. He wanted to make porridge for Aarti, however he was kind of hopeless with his way around the kitchen.
Then Arpita showed up at the house, he looked at her enquiringly as to what brought her there, he didn't need another person to distract him especially since his wife is not well.
"I called your mobile phone a couple of times and then your office, they told me you had an emergency. Is everything alright?"
"Yes, nothing serious except that Aarti is not well," he replied.
Arpita was expecting something much important and was rather disappointed as she never expected him to be concerned about the other woman nevertheless she masked her displeasure as well as she could and when she saw Yash busying himself in the kitchen, she offered to help him.
When they were standing at somehow a close distance she asked him as a matter of fact.
"Yash...Have you ever thought about me all these years?"
Before Yash could answer she continued, "Hear me out first before you say anything."
"You know how unhappy I'm with my marriage right now and you probably think I deserve this after walking out on you, I might disagree there. But can you find it in your heart to forgive me..." she paused and added, "I can leave my husband and you can walk away too, we can start a new life with the three of us, you me and Palak." She smiled triumphantly.
She had said so much so he had to reply, he had only managed to open his mouth and say "Arpita...," when he sensed a steadfast gaze on him, "Oh! God...it can't be her...Could she have listened to all this?" he scrambled to think. He lifted his gaze towards her and saw that Aarti's face had turned white as if she had seen a ghost and she stared back at him for the longest time.
He gasped, "Aarti...wait.." alas he was too late as she had staggered back to the room. He followed her to the room and saw her sitting on the bed with her face facing the wall. Yash walked slowly and sat beside her, he lifted his hand and put it on hers but she quickly pulled her hand from his grip.
"Aarti...look at me, ok don't, if you don't want to but at least listen to my explanation."
She stone-walled, disengaging herself and he felt his heart being ripped out.
"Aarti...," he groaned and almost immediately she started to cry.
Once she quietened down she said in a cracking voice, "there is no pressure for you to stay married to me, I will set you free. You had a lot more with her, you had a child with her obviously you are not over her. And I'm not good enough for you."
For a second he believed he was in a dream. He embraced her in his arms and buried his face in her hair with only her scent engulfing and comforting him.
"Without you, I-I am incomplete. I love you too much, you need to trust me when I say I'm not going anywhere without you," he said choking on his words.
Aarti spun around, she had to see for herself if he was telling the truth. She looked intently into his eyes and could see only herself in them, she almost chuckled at her absurdity. Her eyes were red and watery and it pained him to see her like that, he wiped the tears away.
"You are the only person I need and want," he reassured her.
Aarti wanted badly to believe his words yet her mind wandered to the message she received on her phone yesterday, she got up to pick her phone.
"What's this, huh..?" she showed him the message.
He read the message a few times, shock and then anger consumed him. He checked the number from which the message was sent and recognised it instantly. He dragged the reluctant Aarti to face the person who created all this mess.
"Arpita...Did you sent the message to Aarti yesterday? Why would do such a stupid thing like that?" Yash said in a loud voice while shoving the phone under her nose.
Arpita was unfazed by all these accusations, she merely said, "But I didn't lie, I told the truth, you were with me." Aarti felt weak again, she dropped herself onto the sofa.
Yash flew into a rage and pranced around like a mad man.
"The only reason I was there was because you literally begged me to come and safe you from your crazy and abusive husband."
He paused and then some sort realization hit him, "Or maybe there never was a crazy and abusive husband, you just made it up to gain sympathy and to make me come to you."
"Why are you doing this Arpita? Do you realize how much pain Aarti is in?" he said somewhat painfully.
"Aarti...he is only thinking of her pain, what about mine," Arpita thought to herself and flinched.
"Yash...let her be, why do I need to care about her. I want you back, I want my daughter back...," she let everything out, not paying heed to the fact that Aarti is right there listening.
"I should have expected this from you, marriage is like a toy to you, something that you leave and pick up whenever you like. I was too poor for you and now when you have everything you want, you are still not happy and running after those whom you left."
He went closer to her and said, "Guess what? Arpita...those you left have moved on to something much better."
He averted his gaze to Aarti and said, "You would never leave him even if I'm poor, sick or crippled, would you...Aarti." She smiled through her tears and nodded.
He continued, "There Arpita, you have your answer. Aarti is too good to be compared with anyone let alone you."
A sudden warm feeling engulfed Aarti and she felt every inch of her body screamed, "He loves me, he loves me, we are always going to be together."
Arpita froze in her spot with this unexpected revelation, "This is not what I envisioned, Yash would never not want me. He begged me to stay with me five years ago, why won't he beg now." She furrowed her brows, is this the end.
However everything was not over yet, Arpita had one more card left to play.
"I want Palak, you had her all this while," she demanded. Both Yash and Aarti had horrified look on their faces.
Yash let out a small gasp, "Oh! Really...what are you planning to do with her?, put her in some corner of your house and pride yourself for giving birth to her."
"Arpita...get out of my house and don't ever let me see you again," he was becoming increasingly exasperated. Before it escalated to an untoward incident, she chose to leave.
Aarti made a dash to Yash and wrapped her arms around him and he responded by holding her as close as possible.
"I'm sorry," she muttered.
He pulled her away but his hands still clutched on her shoulders, he asked, "What are you sorry about?"
"Because I doubted you, I said all those things, I never wanted you to go," she said.
A smile formed on his lips and he replied, "I know."
